The in-game currency, known as diamantium, is no longer available for purchase, though you can use any that you might have left until the game shuts down.

Nintendo, like many other companies, has seen a lot of room for expansion in the mobile gaming space, and over the last few years, the company has released quite a few mobile titles to that end. Of those, Dragalia Lost was quite unique, in that it was a completely new IP developed specifically for mobile rather than an adaptation of an existing Nintendo franchise.

While it saw some success in its earlier years though, it seems like Nintendo no longer deems it financially viable. The company announced earlier this year that Dragalia Lost would be closing its services soon, and it’s now revealed the specific date for that. The Cygames-developed action RPG will be shutting down and become unplayable starting November 30.

Starting now, the in-game currency known as diamantium is no longer for purchase. If, however, you have previously bought diamantium saved up, you can still use it between now and November 30. The Upgrade Essentials and Packs, meanwhile, will only remain purchasable until October 31.

It's now Nintendo's second highest earning mobile title behind Fire Emblem Heroes.

Nintendo’s Dr. Mario World may be off to a comparatively slower start than mobile efforts like Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem Heroes. However, its newer IP Dragalia Lost is doing very well. Since launching in September 2018, it’s garnered over $100 million in total player spending according to Sensor Tower.

The spending is across three million downloads and is already more than Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. It’s currently Nintendo’s second highest earning mobile title with Fire Emblem Heroes still in the lead. The latter’s revenue is quite monstrous at this point with $591 million earned since it launched in February 2017.

Of course, Nintendo has other titles in the works for mobile including Mario Kart Tour. The mobile adaptation of the popular kart racing series had a closed beta that concluded on June 4th. Though certain aspects could change down the line, Mario Kart Tour attracted criticism for its gacha mechanics, pay-to-win mechanics and a stamina system that limited how often you could race.

Nintendo seems to be finally getting a grip on the mobile market.

Nintendo’s first forays into the mobile market weren’t quite as grand as one might have expected. While Super Mario Run and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp were successes in their own right, they lacked the long-term appeal of many mobile titles. It seems like things are changing, though, based on their latest financial report, which says mobile profits on the rise.

They reported that their revenue from the mobile market has exceeded $400 million (USD), a stiff rise from last year by 17%. A large part of that has been due to the success of Fire Emblem Heroes and their first original mobile property, Dragalia Lost. It makes sense, since both of those games are more in line with what the mobile market usually gravitates toward, from both an aesthetic and gameplay mechanics standpoint- much more so than earlier efforts, at the very least.

With Mario Kart Tour coming sometime this year, and having an Android beta starting soon, Nintendo hopes to keep this momentum going well into the next year. You can also read more about what Nintendo reported about their traditional games’ sales, and where Switch sales are standing.

Nintendo apparently won’t stand for excessive or exploitative monetization of their games.

Nintendo hasn’t had as many runaway successes in the mobile game market as one might expect (or Nintendo themselves might have wanted), but it seems like that won’t make them resort to the kind of abusive and exploitative monetization practices that other mobile game companies so frequently rely on.

How do we know this? Because CyberAgent, the parent company for Cygames, who partnered with Nintendo on the mobile game Dragalia Lost, recently complained that their revenues from that game are not as high as they could be—because Nintendo stops them from excessive monetization practices, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

“Nintendo is not interested in making a large amount of revenue from a single smartphone game,” one CyberAgent official reportedly said. “If we managed the game alone, we would have made a lot more.”

Apparently, a lot of this comes from Nintendo wanting to protect its family friendly brand (which would be hard to do if kids could suddenly spend a few thousand bucks on their parents’ credit card in one of their mobile games). Nintendo has previously also spoken out against exploitation of players and bottom-of-the-barrel pricing, so this would line up with that too.

Interestingly enough, Dragalia Lost has done incredibly well regardless—so you have to wonder exactly how much money Cygames was hoping to make from it if they’re still not satisfied.

The UK isn’t the only country that has seen the launch of Dragalia Lost, the action RPG for mobiles from Nintendo and Cygames that represents the former’s first new IP for smartphones. No, it seems that alongside the UK, four more countries can now play the free-to-play game, should they choose to.

The game’s website confirms that the title is now available to download in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore as well. This launch in four countries with affluent populations should help the game generate more revenue, which it has been doing well with since its launch. As a matter of fact, Dragalia Lost has already made more money than Animal Crossing Pocket Camp or Super Mario Run have managed, and this is in spite of it not having the association with a popular IP that those other two games enjoy. It remains to be seen how well it will do in these new markets.

Dragalia Lost can be downloaded on the App Store and Google Play.

Without any warning, the action RPG is available to British smartphones now.

Dragalia Lost, the new action RPG from Nintendo and Cygames for smartphones that represents Nintendo’s first new IP launch for smartphones yet, launched last year, but only in some regions. In spite of this, however, it seems that the game has managed to do quite well for itself.

Now, Nintendo and Cygames are giving it a shot at even greater success, by launching it in yet another major market. Dragalia Lost is available now on iOS and Android smartphones in the UK. You can get it from the iOS App Store and Google Play.

It’s unclear what is taking this game so long to launch in so many countries (as of right now, it is still not available in most of mainland Europe, or Canada), but I would imagine it’s some regulations pertaining to lootboxes, of which this game uses a form, that Nintendo is researching before launching the game in a market.

It is now Nintendo’s second most successful mobile game of all time.

Dragalia Lost, the brand new IP that Nintendo launched for mobiles with Cygames, seems to be doing pretty well. We’ve already heard of how it is outpacing Animal Crossing Pocket Camp and Super Mario Run; however, now it seems as though it has officially overtaken their lifetime revenues, having earned more than $75 million since its launch, Sensor Tower reports.

This means that it is now Nintendo’s most successful mobile game ever, except for Fire Emblem Heroes; this is especially impressive since unlike all of Nintendo’s other mobile games, Dragalia Lost has no popular IP recognition attached to it, and has made all this money purely on its own merits.

An important thing to remember here, however, is Pokemon GO – which is in a whole other stratosphere of success – is not counted in these rankings. That one is handled independently by Niantic and The Pokémon Company, and not Nintendo.

With Dragalia Lost now launching in multiple other countries, I imagine we will only see it get more successful as time goes by.

Nintendo’s President wants mobile games to be an ongoing pillar of revenue for the company going forward.

Nintendo’s mobile efforts have been a little inconsistent so far. While games like Fire Emblem Heroes and Dragalia Lost have done reasonably well, and contributed to a few hundred million dollars in annual review to Nintendo’s bottom line last year, on the whole, it is telling when Fortnite on iOS alone makes more money than all Nintendo mobile games put together.

Put simply, the company is hoping for bigger hits on mobile than what’s they have going right now. Speaking to Japanese outlet Nikkan, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa noted that the company is currently working on multiple smartphone applications, and hopes that these new upcoming games will be “huge hits”. According to Furukawa, this is important, because he expects smartphone gaming to become a “pillar” for Nintendo, in addition to their main console business. That said, he did admit that this could take quite a while.

Personally, as long as Nintendo’s mobile games are kept separate from their console efforts, I have no issues with the company continuing to put some out. If nothing else, it quells the cries from investors who would otherwise want them to go third party.

Most of that money came from Fire emblem Heroes, as you might expect.

While Nintendo’s mobile game efforts haven’t been a full fledged world conquering success like many may have expected, they have still mostly done alright. For instance, in the year 2018, Nintendo’s mobile games made $348 in revenue cumulatively, buoyed mostly by Fire Emblem Heroes and the newly launched Dragalia Lost, according to Sensor Tower.

$117 million of that revenue came in the fourth quarter, which is the most revenue Nintendo’s mobile games have generated in a single quarter thus far. As mentioned already, Heroes was the top grossing mobile game, earning about $225 million; Dragalia Lost came in second, with slightly over $50 million earned, and Animal Crossing Pocket Camp rounded out the top three with slightly under $50 million units earned.

Amazingly enough, this revenue from four Nintendo games put together is less than half of what Pokemon GO alone earned last year, which puts into perspective just how a) relatively muted Nintendo’s mobile efforts have been, and b) how massive Pokemon GO really is.

Nintendo's newest mobile-centric IP is doing very well for itself.

Dragalia Lost, the new IP that Nintendo created from the ground up just for mobile devices, has been performing very well since its launch. It grossed $3 million in its first five days on sale, then crossing $16 million in revenue not long after- and in the process also outpacing Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp’s commercial performance at its own launch.

Now, according to a report by Sensor Tower, it’s crossed yet another milestone. With just 70 days on the market, Dragalia Lost has now crossed $50 million in revenue across all the markets it’s available in, with 60 per cent of that revenue coming from those who’re playing the game on iOS.

Dragalia Lost is, of course, a free-to-play title, like all of Nintendo’s mobile titles, which means its revenue has been coming in from in-game purchases made by players. Players in the US and Japan have collectively been responsible for $35 million of that revenue.

Impressively enough, while Fire Emblem Heroes, Nintendo’s most successful mobile title, was averaging about $9 spent per each download of the game within a similar timeframe of its own launch, Dragalia Lost is coming out well ahead, with each of its 1.9 million downloads in the US and Japan spending $22 in-game on average. Between those two, spending is much higher in Japan, with $35 spent in-game per download on average, while US audiences are spending $10 per download on average.

Those are decent numbers, especially considering the fact that it’s an entirely new IP that had little to no cache when it first launched 70 days ago. Of course, it’s nowhere near the success of the gargantuan Fire Emblem Heroes, but perhaps that’s an unreasonably high standard to hold the game to.
