Three years after its disappointing launch, the compilation has received a significant update that could make it worth playing.

The gaming industry has seen its fair share of disappointing releases. Year in and year out, flops come and go, some on a much larger scale than others. By comparison, 2021 doesn’t seem all that terrible, with flops like Balan Wonderworld and Battlefield 2042 sticking out the most. However, it also marked the launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which packaged Rockstar’s classic 3D trilogy of Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas into one remastered compilation.

To say that all three titles are beloved among fans would be an understatement, especially given how they influenced modern open worlds as we know them. Even with the trilogy’s lack of footage leading up to the launch, everyone was still hyped. Of course, the rest is history.

Performance issues on consoles, misspelt signs, glitches, bugs, crashes, broken animations, oddly modeled characters (some who looked nothing like the original games), that rain from San Andreas, which made it difficult to see anything, and more were only the beginning. That it cost $60 rubbed many the wrong way – its Metacritic user score plummeted to 0.4 at launch and currently sits at 1.1. Not that the critics’ scores were any better at 54 Metascore for the PS5 version based on 47 reviews. The less said about other platforms, the better.

It was a messy time, but even with Rockstar issuing refunds on PC, the trilogy sold over 10 million copies as of February 2022. That’s roughly three months after launch, seemingly indicating that most would wait for fixes. Maybe they were content with the current package. Blame was allocated across the board, first to Grove Street Games (which also faced criticism for its 10th-anniversary ports of Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City) for its handling of the project, then to Rockstar for going ahead with the release despite its state.

Regardless, fixes did arrive roughly a month after launch, adding a cinematic camera to all games, fixing several misspelled signs, and improving stability (a classic). It even prevented rain from appearing indoors – ignore why this happened in the first place. However, the most significant ones would appear on Android and iOS, when those versions launched in December 2023.

Published by Netflix and developed by Video Games Deluxe, it improved the experience significantly. Not only were the visuals better than the current version on consoles and PC, but it also captured the feel of the classics. The obvious question then was when it would arrive for other platforms, if at all.

After nearly a year of no news, the update is finally available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch, bringing a laundry list of fixes, improvements and even some quality-of-life features. Between all the fixes and updates done throughout the years, the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition is worth dipping back into, even if it’s still not quite perfect.

Though official patch notes aren’t available, community members like TJGM and VideoTechUK on Twitter have already begun compiling the most significant changes. Let’s start with the positive, the biggest being Classic Lighting, which restores the lighting in each title to resemble the original games.

It now applies across all areas in each title, so instead of Liberty City looking oddly bright at night during the rain, it’s now appropriately dark and borderline gothic. San Andreas looks phenomenal, with the orange hues of the opening restored and looking better than ever. It’s a massive jump visually, but that’s only the start, as volumetric clouds are now present in San Andreas when flying high in the sky.

Shadows now realistically move in time with the position of the sun. Those awkward shifting shadows of overhead structures from before are gone, and the movement is now more natural. Fire has some additional bloom and lens flares added alongside new, more realistic glass-breaking effects. Cubemap reflections are back and look much better than the previous screen-space reflections. Several issues with frame pacing have also been addressed, and performance is better on current-gen platforms, PC and even the Nintendo Switch.

Of course, each game has its own share of fixes. The neon lights at Malibu Club and other locations in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City have been restored while Grand Theft Auto 3 has better rain effects and texture improvements. Sandstorms in San Andreas are now properly portrayed, Market Station looks far better (with lighting added to the tunnels), CJ’s character model while cycling has been fixed, and perhaps most important of all – the lamp posts throughout the world are now orange instead of white. It’s truly a brand new world – even the birds have returned across all three games.

There are a fair number of gameplay improvements as well. Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City now allow for shooting and moving with weapons like shotguns and assault rifles, which previously wasn’t possible. Movement animations while aiming also look far smoother. You can also pause during cutscenes and save files to display the date and time, making it far easier to discern.

All this being said, there are still issues across all three titles. CJ’s face is more in line with the original, but other character models, including Denise, still look completely out of place. The level of detail is also underwhelming and in some cases, downright awful, while the camera will continuously auto-center if moved, which is most annoying when flying. Poorly upscaled artwork can still be found in San Andreas, and interior lighting requires changes to resemble the original games.

Nevertheless, the current state of the trilogy is far superior to its launch. It wouldn’t be without controversy, of course, with Grove Street Games’ logo and name removed from the intro and main menu screens. Founder Thomas Williamson criticized the removal of developers from the game’s credits (which isn’t the case) but also revealed that the update “includes hundreds of fixes that were provided by those developers that stayed out of players’ hands for years.” Which fixes the studio specifically worked on in this update is unknown, but it does raise an interesting point.

Considering the fixes arrived in the mobile versions last year, what took so long to bring them to other platforms? An agreement with Netflix? Extensive testing to ensure they landed without breaking more things than they fixed? We’ll never know, but the timing is odd (or maybe not, considering the holiday season).

Regardless, if you’ve been on the fence about picking up Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, it may still be worth waiting for at least a price drop. With the issues still plaguing the trilogy, which are far from insignificant, it wouldn’t be remiss to wait for another update to drop and potentially improve them further. It can evoke that nostalgia from the originals, thanks to the lighting changes and volumetric fog. However, there’s still more work to be done before the redemption story is complete.

The visual improvements, bug fixes and quality-of-life changes from the mobile versions are now available on other platforms.

A new update is live for the controversial Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on consoles and PC. It adds visual enhancements previously exclusive to the mobile versions developed by Video Games Deluxe and published by Netflix. These include a classic lighting option, which brings the atmosphere and skybox closer to the original games.

As pointed out by Twitter user TJGM, the update adds volumetric clouds when flying high up in the sky, improved lamp posts, shadows moving in real time, improved running and aiming animations, lens flares on fire and new effects for glass breaking. CJ also no longer appears deformed when cycling, and weapons from Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City, which required standing still, can now be aimed while moving.

There are also options to pause cutscenes and save games have dates and timestamps attached. Not everything is ideal, though. Camera controls tend to re-center often, especially while flying, and LOD doesn’t look very good. Nevertheless, considering everything wrong with the original release, this is a massive step up. Oddly enough, Grove Street Games, who worked on the base game, and their logo are missing from the main menu and splash screen.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is available for Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and PC. Check out our review of the launch version here.

Activity in the Steam backend seems to suggest that Rockstar is working on an upcoming patch for the remastered trilogy.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition was as close as we’ve got to a major new GTA release in a decade, and it was roundly criticized by players and critics upon its launch in 2021, owing to the technical state that it launched in and the less-than-ideal “improvements” it made to three bona fide classics. Even now, the remastered trilogy remains in a state where there’s plenty of room for polishing and improvements- and it seems some of those could be coming in soon, on PC at least.

As spotted by @videotechuk_ on Twitter, recent activity on Gand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition’s SteamDB page suggests that Rockstar has been working on new fixes for the remaster on Steam. As the user points out, the SteamDB changelog suggests that this is “actual, real activity”, not just something related to changing encryption keys, something that you see quite often with games.

When this update will arrive and whether it will be targeting all platforms remains to be seen.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definition Edition is currently available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, and Android.

Worse still though, it appears as though The Trilogy has been abandoned by Rockstar and Take Two Interactive.

Let’s answer the question immediately: is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition finally fixed, after two years of patch updates following a more-than-sloppy initial release? In a word, no.

However, the playability of each entry will always vary between players. Texture pop-ins and absent collision detection might be amusing to some and downright immersion ruining to others whilst game breaking bugs – which, to be fair have since been patched – such as the invincible bazooka wielding maniac on the rooftop in Los Desperados or T-Bone the bullet sponge in GTA: San Andreas’ “Pier 69” mission didn’t occur for everyone. A quick scan through various subreddits and there are players who lament the aging mechanics of the original games but by and large report them as playable, completable, and above all else, they’re enjoyable. But for everyone who expected a Definitive Edition of Rockstar’s iconic titles, well, we’ve still a way to go.

The most recent patch, version 1.04.5, was released October 18th, 2022, but it’s been radio silence ever since then. The patch notes for this specific update make for slim reading too, with stability improvements across all platforms the only stated additions. We must go all the way back to February 2022 and patch update 1.04 to find a significant list of improvements. Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition improved collision detection across multiple locations including the formerly solid, drivable lake in Belleville Park, fixed issues relating to the awarding of achievements, repaired problems of tanks spawning without doors, and reinstated missing features which should have been there from the off such as the ability to hold the sprint button to perform a partial sprint when using tap to sprint. Likewise, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive Edition saw fixes to collision and texture detection in patch 1.04, plus fixed the issue of the player failing the mission “Cop Land” should the café blow up, and the issue of the player not failing the mission when they die during “Cannon Fodder”. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition saw the aforementioned invincible T-Bone be patched in version 1.04 alongside a raft of attention to detail fixes ranging from traffic lights not appearing, music continuing to play outdoors, building debris remaining after reloading and – most crucially – the gap in CJ’s high afro hairstyle being filled in.

These are just a brief cross-section of the changes brought to The Trilogy in patch 1.04, and whilst the improvements are extensive, they still don’t close the book of issues prevalent in these remasters. The fact the 1.04 update came a full three months after release is unforgiveable for some too, given Rockstar’s bottomless pit of wealth they’ve accumulated considering GTA V and its online counterpart’s ongoing success. These games are legendary, and they should have been given the budget, time, and resources Rockstar has at their disposal to bring them bang up to date.

For their part, Rockstar at least addressed the shoddy state of these remasters by apologising days after release. Their statement reads: “The updated versions of these classic games did not launch in a state that meets our own standards of quality, or the standards our fans have come to expect. We have ongoing plans to address the technical issues and to improve each game going forward. With each planned update, the games will reach the level of quality that they deserve to be.”

Their ongoing plans? Well, principally, their plans were presumably to remove developer Grove Street Games from the project entirely, which they eventually did in late 2022. They had to be seen to be doing something, right? Getting rid of Grove Street Games kind of implies the responsibility for the lacklustre standard of these remasters lands squarely at their door, but the strange thing is why has there been no update to GTA: The Trilogy since then? Aren’t Rockstar interested in fixing the problems that still exist?

And yes, whilst these remasters are playable, completable, enjoyable, and in places look pretty good, Vice City especially, bugs and visual glitches persist. As reported in February 2023, lampposts and streetlights still disappear into invisible sink holes when driven into (weird seeing as this wasn’t ever a problem in the originals), fog and cloud cover is still non-existent across San Andreas, massively reducing the nostalgic atmosphere the game is fondly remembered for.

Rain was amongst the most notable issues when The Trilogy first released; white laser raindrops so heavy they completely cover the screen, masking the way forward. Whilst the impenetrable rain was patched early on, strange water-based artefacts remain – certain interiors leak from the ceiling, as if rain can now somehow seep through buildings; interior surfaces glisten as if slick with rainwater. At this stage, it appears these problems will never get fixed. Floating cars, grass growing through concrete, UI present in cutscenes, rain indoors – the list goes on. One major problem that still needs correcting are the gamma settings – lighting is distracting at best and downright impossible to see through at worst. Some cutscenes are so dark it’s impossible to see who they’re featuring. Although, this isn’t such a bad thing in every case as character designs are oftentimes a visage of paper mache babies. These visual oddities would be comical if The Trilogy wasn’t comprised of such famous games.

And that’s the thing, these games are so famous, and so well loved, that a graphical refresh is probably all that was required to satisfy fans. The bar for acceptability wasn’t especially high. Same game, better graphics, that’s all they needed. The age-related flaws prevalent in these titles would be accepted given that The Trilogy is a trio of remasters, not remakes. But the introduction of problems that didn’t even exist in the originals is simply not acceptable. Additionally, the fact so many of these problems remain unfixed is unnecessarily frustrating.

It’ll be interesting to see the state of these games once they’re available on iOS and Android. Pre-registering for The Trilogy on these platforms opened on December 1st, with the games landing on phones and tablets via Netflix on December 14th. Is this where Rockstar have been pooling their resources? Will these mobile versions release problem free? Based on the current state of GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition it seems unlikely. And it’s a massive shame to be so negative. We all want these remasters to function perfectly, but it seems unlikely at this stage that they ever will.

If we’re being optimistic, the launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on mobile might provide the springboard for a final, definitive patch that’ll fix the console and PC versions once and for all.

As mentioned elsewhere in this feature mileage for playability will vary between players. If you’re okay with texture pop-ins, non-existent collision detection, and the chance of immersion breaking bugs, then knock yourself out. These games are still special. It might be worth holding out for a sale though, as given the persistent disappointing state of these remasters, the asking price for The Trilogy plainly isn’t worth it.

That's according to an updated release schedule until FY 2025 that Take-Two recently shared as a part of its quarterly earnings report.

Grove Street Games and Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition may have had a disastrous launch on consoles and PC, but the games are yet to launch on mobile devices. Rockstar and Take-Two had suggested a release for the first half of 2022, although it seems that things have been internally delayed.

Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, recently held its quarterly earnings call, during which it shared its release schedule outlining details on upcoming releases for the period of FY 2023 to FY 2025. In it, it’s been stated that GTA Trilogy‘s mobile releases are planned for FY 2023- so the games will now be launching sometime between now and March 31, 2023.

That said, if the games do launch on mobile platforms by June 2022, the GTA Trilogy will have hit its supposed release date of H1 2022. But with no marketing suggesting the same and this recent release schedule, this prospect is looking highly unlikely.

On the sales front, the GTA Trilogy has “exceeded expectations” with more than 10 million units sold as of February 2022- read more on that through here.

A massive new update brings a large number of fixes to each of the three technically beleaguered remasters, as previously promised.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition had a rough launch, and the many, many issues the collection of three remasters launched with was met with overwhelming backlash from fans, to the point where Rockstar had to come out and apologize for the state it had released in.
As the biggest game in the 3D trilogy, GTA: San Andreas has tons of different collectibles. Here's how to find all of them for 100 percent completion.

Much like other titles in the 3D trilogy, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has a number of collectibles required for full completion. There are some other things you could find – like Unique Stunt Jumps – which aren’t required but it’s still fun to check them off of the list.

Let’s take a look at all of the collectibles in the game which carry over to The Definitive Edition:

Tags – There are 100 in total and they require spraying over them.

Oysters – There are 50 in total and, as the name indicates, they’ll be found in bodies of water. This could be at the bottom of the ocean, a lake, river, swimming pool, you name it.

Snapshots – Less of a collectible and more of a photo op, Snapshots require taking pictures of key landmarks and locations. You’ll need 50 in total.

Horseshoes – Essentially just a floating horseshoe, there are 50 in total to collect.

Unique Stunt Jumps – There are a whopping 70 Unique Stunt Jumps spread throughout all of the different locations. Again, they’re not necessary for full completion but if you’re done with everything else, they’re worth pursuing.

Check out the video guides below courtesy of Naizurus and GTA Series Videos to find everything. It’s recommended to play through the story and unlock all of the different cities in the game in order to have free access. You should also wait until the Jetpack is available for free use since this trivializes a lot of the collectible hunting. Head here for more details on how to unlock the Jetpack along with other special vehicles.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition is currently available as part of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.
Money is a key part of every Grand Theft Auto title and Vice City is no exception. Here's how to quickly earn some fat stacks.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City marked a turning point of sorts for the 3D trilogy, adding various new activities and features. But aside from completing the main story missions, how do you go about earning money quickly in the game? Thankfully, several methods which worked in the base game still apply to The Definitive Edition while new assets and properties can help amass a fortune in relatively short time.

One of the easiest methods for earning money is to hold up a store. It’s fairly simple – just point your gun at the cashier. Keeping the gun focused on the cashier will increase the amount earned but will also quickly raise your Wanted level. Make sure you’re ready to evade the cops or retreat to a nearby safe house after the deed is done.

Also, much like Grand Theft Auto 3, there’s a list of cars that you can deliver for cash. The key difference is that you’ll need to purchase the Sunshine Autos property. After that, any cars that are delivered will increase the daily income earned from the asset. This also unlocks street races which, despite having an entry fee, offer lots of profit if you come in first (especially the last race, which can be farmed endlessly for up to $40,000).

In terms of which assets to purchase first, it’s a good idea to acquire Malibu Club and Boatyard along with Sunshine Autos since these can provide a quick profit with their daily income. If you want the maximum amount of daily income, prioritize purchasing all of the different assets and completing their missions.

Also, much like its predecessor, completing various activities like taxi driving, paramedic work and so on will award some cash. These provide upgrades like max health increases and whatnot as well. It’s also key to save often, especially when embarking on missions where you could die (since respawning in the hospital costs money each time).

Of course, you can also just unlock everything and gain tons of cash by using cheats – head here to learn more. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive Edition is currently available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch as part of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. The latter will also be coming to iOS and Android this year. Check out our official review for it here.

Those who purchased the remastered collection on PC have several options of a free title from Rockstar's various franchises.

It seemed like nothing less than a slam dunk when it was announced that Rockstar would be bringing a remastered collection of the classic PS2-era Grand Theft Auto titles to modern platforms this year. However, as most are well aware at this point, it ended up being something of a disaster. The collection, titled Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, had a variety of huge technical issues across all platforms, even seeing it taken down on PC for a brief period. The game is now widely available once again, and those on PC will get a free gift for their troubles.

From now until the beginning of next month, if you purchased the game on PC, you can get a choice of free five games, with the options being Grand Theft Auto 5: Premium Edition, Grand Theft Auto 4: Complete Edition, Max Payne 3, LA Noire or Bully: Scholarship Edition. If you prefer, you can also get something for a game you already own with A Great White Shark Cash Card for GTA Online or 55 Gold Bars for Red Dead Online.

You will be able to redeem any of those seven items up until January 5th 2022. Keep in mind, this only for PC owners and via the Rockstar Launcher, where the collection exclusively launched.
