The zombies are back with a bang, and it's up to us and Crazy Dave to stall their onslaught and take them down once and for all. But does Plants Vs. Zombies Replanted manage to keep our attention?

I‘ve always wished I could play Plants Vs. Zombies again. And now that I’ve got to relive the experience again on my PS5, I can safely say that Replanted is a perfect recreation of the original game that brings back fond memories of the first time I experienced it. It’s also a solid port of the game, running smoothly on my console, while shifting the game over from a keyboard and mouse setup has largely worked well.

If you’re unfamiliar with what this quirky title from PopCap Games entails, the game’s premise is simple. You’re stuck in your house, bang in the middle of a zombie invasion. They want to eat your brains, and you’re going to have to use those brains to defend your home from them. That’s easier said than done, however, as you only have a bunch of seeds from the Doom and Gloom Company to plant in your garden, each of which grows into a plant with a unique purpose.

"The game’s art style is a delight, as is the soundtrack and audio."

Your plants are your only defense against the zombies, but they’re up to the task. The Pea Shooter does exactly what its name suggests, firing off peas at the zombies to halt their advance. You earn Sun, the currency you need to put down more plants, either by waiting for it to drop at random or by planting Sunflowers. More plants with unique functions are made available to you at the end of every level, and new zombie types join the fray as you keep going.

It’s a tower defense title that continues to be quite addictive, despite being around for several years at this point. That’s largely due to how each level plays out, requiring you to plan out your defenses based on the enemies you’re going to encounter, and managing your resources to fend off each wave of zombies.

The game’s art style is a delight, as is the soundtrack and audio. The zombies are quite a funny bunch, leaving you with notes that showcase their lack of brains and probably justifying their relentless efforts to get their hands on yours. You do have an ally in the form of Crazy Dave, whose shop lets you purchase a few upgrades and tools that can give you an advantage when you next take on the zombies.

"It’s a tower defense title that continues to be quite addictive, despite being around for several years at this point."

As far as the updated HD visuals go, Replanted does a good job of preserving the original game’s excellent art direction while making its visuals and colors pop on a 4K display. Frame rates were smooth even when my screen was filled with plants, zombies, and flying melons and peas with no stutter at any point. On a base PS5, the game runs quite well aside from a few minor glitches that I’ll get to in a bit. I’d argue that, as a port, Replanted does a stellar job, but as a purported remaster, it could have done more to improve on the original game.

If I were to complain about something in Replanted, it would be that Dave’s prices are as astronomical as they were back in the day. He requires coins for his business, and they are doled out rather sparingly over the course of the game. With upgrades being as expensive as they are, a little bit of balancing might have eliminated the need to grind for coins and made things a lot more interesting as a result.

For instance, extra seed slots that allow you to take more plants to the fight cost a whopping 20,000 coins, a sum that I couldn’t get to even after completing the main campaign and diving into a fair bit of the minigames and survival modes.

"The zombies are quite a funny bunch, leaving you with notes that showcase their lack of brains,"

However, Dave also brings interesting twists on the game’s formula in the form of Puzzles and minigames. You get to mow down zombies with Wall-nuts in a very amusing take on bowling, for instance. Or use a slot machine to acquire random plants that you must use to fend off another attack on your property. Each minigame or puzzle is quite entertaining, and a nice diversion from the main gameplay loop.

That’s not to say that the main campaign is stagnant, far from it. The zombies soon start to attack at night, and you’re going to have to use an entirely different set of plants to account for the lack of sunlight needed to use plants that grow in the daylight. They then proceed to attack your backyard, where a range of aquatic plants are your only defense for those that take a dip into your swimming pool. They also launch offensives from your roof, where you’re going to want to use catapult plants to counter them.

While the game isn’t particularly difficult, there are levels where you find that the zombies get quite close to your door and manage to finally get their hands on your brains. There is a sense of challenge on those occasions, as all your hard-earned plants get wiped out by the undead horrors they were meant to defend against. The zombies bring ladders, drive trucks, and even resurrect other zombies in their efforts to overwhelm your defenses, making Plants Vs. Zombies a very entertaining game once it gets going.

"I’m a fan of how the experience is presented, and it’s among the more unique tower defense experiences on the market."

There were a few occasional glitches at a few places, such as me not being able to pick up plants in the Raining Seeds bonus level, but they are few and far between and could probably be fixed with a patch at some point.

Aside from the main campaign, puzzles, and minigames, you also get a survival mode that lets you take on multiple waves of zombies while switching up your loadouts between them. It’s a great chance to build a defensive lineup that’s quite fun to see in action. There’s also RIP mode, in which you take on the main campaign once again, with the added caveat that you start all the way back from the beginning if the zombies manage to eat your brains.

The Zen Garden mode is a nice touch, letting you cultivate plants that reward you with valuable coins from time to time. Once again, the prohibitive pricing of valuable items like fertilizers for my plants acted as an obstacle to my progress, leading me to ignore it altogether. It’s there for those of you who might want to kick back and relax after a bout with the zombies, though.

"The game’s art style is a delight, as is the soundtrack and audio."

The option to bring a friend along to the party is also there, with local co-op or versus modes available for you to try out. While I doubt that most of you are going to need help repelling the zombies, getting to play against your buddies in versus mode can be a fun way to spend your evening. You play as either the plants or the zombies in a gameplay loop that keeps things quite interesting indeed!

The presence of so many options, each of which puts a unique twist on the core gameplay loop, makes Plants Vs. Zombies Replanted a very entertaining option for those of you looking for a bit of casual fun from your consoles. I’m a fan of how the experience is presented, and it’s among the more unique tower defense experiences on the market.

It’s quite easy to recommend this one, considering how its pacing and various game modes keep things interesting right off the bat, and manage to sustain that engagement long after you beat the final boss and roll the credits that are accompanied by a very catchy song. Whether you’re a newcomer to the game or a long-term fan looking to take a nostalgic trip back to its early days, Plants Vs. Zombies Replanted is going to keep you entertained for many fun-filled hours.

It also clarified that the team was "putting the final touches on the Lawn" leading up to its release later today on consoles and PC.

Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted is launching today, but controversy hit the 2009 classic’s remaster when those who accessed it early discovered numerous issues. These include the use of generative AI and stages having the wrong music. PopCap Games has since responded to the same, acknowledging the unintended access and stating that the game wasn’t “quite finished” at that point.

“While we find it super exciting to see fans on the Lawn already, we hadn’t quite finished getting the lawn ready yet for our 10/23 launch date. In fact, you will continue to see the game updated as the team is hard at work putting the final touches on the Lawn leading up to our global release.”

It also noted that some concept art was created after the game’s original launch. “Plants vs. Zombies is a beloved IP that has seen hundreds of passionate artists and developers contribute to it over the past 16 years, and as we work to bring that all together in PVZ: Replanted, we want to make sure we are giving you the best experience possible.

“That means showing you original concept art and work that, in some cases, was created after Plants vs Zombies 1 launched in 2009. We did this to not only showcase Plants vs Zombies 1, but also the many more great Plants vs Zombies games it inspired. This legacy continues with our passionate team of artists, who continue to bring Plants vs. Zombies to life across the franchise.”

Considering the various gameplay changes, intentional or otherwise, PopCap said it can be a “delicate balance between making sure it feels like the original from 16 years ago while also making sure it operates in a modern context. We hear your feedback here and are already hard at work to deliver the game we all know and love, specifically when it comes to the audio, and the more nuanced actions of our characters (looking at you, Dr Z!).” It also denied the use of generative AI.

Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 for $19.99. Aside from 4K resolution support, it includes Cloudy Day Mode, a more challenging option due to less sun, and Rest in Peace Mode, an Ironman take on Adventure Mode.

Players can also go hands-on with lost levels, earn new Achievements, and either team up in co-op or engage in PvP. Check out our feature for more details.

Proving harder to kill than plants in paving, the undead invading garden lawns again.

Plants vs. Zombies is a trailblazer, laying the foundation for tower defence and strategy games back in 2009. Tactical and tense, but oozing charm with its quirky premise and characters, the title has gone on to be ported to practically every platform since, whilst spawning a handful of sequels. In lieu of a new entry, Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted returns to where it all began. If you’re on the fence about picking this one up, stay tuned: here are 15 things you need to know.

It’s PvZ, but HD

Even though there’s enough appetite for a new entry, Plants vs. Zombies is instead returning to its roots – this time, in glorious HD. Proving that good game design is timeless, the original garden themed tower defence is back, now with a freshly mowed lawn and re-painted fence. This is an HD port of the original game – same source code, upscaled and widescreened in 4K. Some graphics are being imported from the iPad HD port, with the remainder being retraced. While mechanically unchanged, Plants Vs. Zombies: Replanted’s sharp edges aren’t just for beauty’s sake but ensure obscured elements from earlier versions – seed packet sprites, item price fonts, particles – are more clearly visible.

New Content

Replanted’s Steam page confirms the remaster is “packed with new secrets and content to uncover.” We know Adventure Mode will feature, followed by Mini-Games, Puzzle, and Survival Modes once the campaign has been completed. As for new content, well, it’s not entirely new: Bonus Levels! is a mode exclusive to Replanted – packaging the majority of the Limbo page mini-games from the original PC version, including them as newly playable levels whereas earlier versions required a Cheat Engine to access.

Mini-Games Will Feature

Plants Vs. Zombies and Mini-Games are peas in a pod. Of the series’ storied Mini-Game catalogue, most are returning in Replanted – HD polished like the rest of the game. Confirmed as included are fan-favourite detours Wall-nut Bowling, Slot Machine, ZomBotany, and more, with the remaster promising even more chaotic fun than their earlier versions.

Some Platform-Exclusive Mini-Games Excluded

There are a couple of reasons why certain Mini-Games that appeared on specific platforms are set to be excluded in Replanted. First, certain platforms relied on extra apparatus – the Nintendo DS and its stylus, for instance – meaning we’re unlikely to see Homerun Derby or Air Raid in Replanted. Secondly, Replanted’s cross-platform launch suggests some Mini-Games wouldn’t be compatible, meaning iPad and Android-exclusive Buttered Popcorn could miss out.

New Multi-Player Modes

Something new Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted brings to the table is two multi-player modes: Team Up is a co-op mode with two players defending the yard together, and PvP where two will battle head-to-head to take control of the zombies. Both of these modes are local only, and currently there is no word on whether online multi-player will become available.

No Microtransactions

Here’s some welcome news – it has been confirmed that Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted will not feature microtransactions. All skins, cosmetics, and upgrades are attainable in-game; everything is included in the price. Furthermore, there are currently no DLCs planned. Whether that changes in the future likely depends on how commercially successful this remaster is.

New Solo-Challenge Mode: Cloudy Day

Cloudy Day is a gloomy new feature, where dark clouds block sunlight and sunflowers take an adorably animated snooze. Appearing in ten non-linear Adventure Mode levels, Cloudy Day tasks players with managing their sun production, using sunny periods to plant as many sun-producing plants as possible and stockpiling their produce before the storm rolls in. Under cloud cover, players will need to rely on their existing defences until the sunshine returns. During cloudy spells, seed packet costs are halved and they’ll reload faster. Cloudy Day presents new layers of strategy, with players having to think strategically about their defences in preparation for a rainy day.

Another New Solo-Challenge Mode: Rest in Peace

Or R.I.P., for short – Rest in Peace is a hardcore permadeath mode set to test the mettle of experienced PvZ players. This optional toggle for Adventure Mode transforms the campaign into a one-life gauntlet, where losing a level forces players all the way back to the start. There’s a rogue-like twist to R.I.P. Mode too, with Crazy Dave pre-selecting three seeds to use exclusively on each level. With difficulty set to ramp up quickly, Rest in Peace promises the tensest PvZ experience to date.

Tree of Wisdom Returns

The original Tree of Wisdom revealed hints the more it grew, with “cheat codes” rewarded as its hefty trunk reached certain milestones. It’s likely the Tree of Wisdom will function similarly in Replanted, however there is an innovation tied to the tree unique to the remaster. Now, players can customise visual options via the Tree of Wisdom’s toggle buttons, with one confirmed option being to switch to a pixellated Browncoat Zombie skin. There’s a pre-order bonus item that can be toggled on or off here too – we’ll outline this item later.

PvZ 2’s Speed-Up Button Appears

A welcome quality of life addition makes it way over to Replanted – the ability to speed up time. While not available in the 2009 original, now Plants vs. Zombie players will be able to turbo boost the action up to 2.5x faster. Levels can take a minute to get going, so the speed-up function is a nice addition. It can make gathering sunlight a little trickier though.

There’s an All-New Art and Concept Library

Placed in a new section within the Almanac, the all-new Art and Concept Library charts all the development and pre-production art and sketches of the game. On the one hand, this is a nice nod to the game’s legacy, and should provide an interesting browse for new and veteran players alike. On the other hand, there’re legitimate question marks over the Library given the game’s original artists are not affiliated with the remaster.

Pre-Order Bonus

We mentioned it a minute ago – pre-ordering Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted gives a delightfully retro peashooter skin, drawn in the same pixellated style of the already-mentioned Browncoat Zombie. It’d be nice if more retro skins are available in-game as one-or-two pixellated characters might look out of place in Replanted’s high-res garden. Also worth pointing out here is that Replanted is a digital only release. No physical release has been revealed so far.

Release Date, Platforms, and Price

Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted releases worldwide on October 23rd. The game is available on pretty much every major platform, both past and current generation hardware. PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, or the EA app. Reasonably priced too, retailing at $19.99 / £17.99.

PC Requirements

Playing PvZ: Replanted won’t require too demanding a setup: 3rd gen Intel i3 or AMD FX-6300 processor, Intel Integrated Graphics and 4GB RAM are your minimum requirements. An Intel i5 or equivalent CPU, Radeon HD 7730, GeForce GT 640 or better GPU, and 8GB RAM are recommended specs. 4GB storage space is required. Controller support is available on PC, which is especially useful for those local co-op and PvP sessions.

No Mod Support

Replanted will not ship with official mod support. Despite this being a heavily requested feature, modding continues to be sidelined. Reportedly, the original 2009 game code was tough to modify, and without Steam Workshop Support, the modding community surrounding PvZ wasn’t as plentiful as it arguably could have been. It’d be nice if this changed, but players should be prepared for official mod support to not arrive.

Touted as an HD remaster of the popular tower defense title, Replanted is a downgrade over the original in numerous ways.

Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted, an HD version of PopCap Games’ classic tower defense, isn’t out until later this week. However, those who purchased it on the EA App can play it early by pre-downloading and changing the Unity executable. Unfortunately, it’s exposed the various problems with this supposed remaster.

As detailed by GabrielOflTM’s review, Replanted has missing levels and some that are outright broken, poorly upscaled art, and numerous bugs. There are loading screens when transitioning from menus to intros, menus from the mobile version, and other strange choices. None of the levels have the correct soundtrack and if you try speeding up the game, the music speeds up as well.

Overall, it’s not an ideal experience for either long-time fans or those jumping into the franchise for the first time. Electronic Arts hasn’t said anything about the game’s current state ahead of launch, so stay tuned for updates and potential fixes.

Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted launches on October 23rd for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 for $19.99.

PopCap Games wants to capture "that classic experience we all know and love and bringing it to the modern mobile experience."

PopCap Games has provided an update on Plants vs. Zombies 3, the follow-up to the super-popular tower defense series, and confirmed that it’s entering limited testing for certain territories. Though a pre-alpha released in June 2019 for a limited number of users, the developer is going back to basics. You’re still fighting on the Lawn in Neighborville and participating in lane-based tower defense but there will be new plants, new areas and much more.

PopCap’s Matt Townsend notes that the sequel is “All about capturing that classic experience we all know and love and bringing it to the modern mobile experience. We want old fans to revel in the experience and strategy, meet up with old friends, and help Dave all over Town – all while bringing in a whole new generation to help defend against the ever looming threat of Dr. Zomboss.”

Along with the return of Sunflower, there will be an emphasis on puzzles along with the standard strategy gameplay. It’s currently being released in Australia and the Philippines on the Google Play Store via open beta for a short time. A Samsung Galaxy S6 or equivalent with Android 7 and 2 GB of RAM is recommended.

Plants vs. Zombies 3 is still a long ways off from release – Townsend notes that, “This is just the beginning of us building towards an awesome future.” There will be new features and new areas detailed overtime along with more testing opportunities in the future so stay tuned.

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville is also included in the line-up. All three titles will be free for subscribers starting August 3rd.

Next month’s line-up of free titles for PlayStation Plus subscribers has finally been revealed. Leading the pack is Hunter’s Arena: Legends from Mantisco, set in an age where hunters battle demons (and each other) for supremacy. The PvEv supports up to 30 players and involves venturing into dungeons to battle AI foes, gather loot and level up to overcome other hunters.

Hunter’s Arena: Legends will be available for both PS4 and PS5 subscribers, which is a nice bonus given the pattern of PS5-exclusive titles on the service for the past few months. Other free games include Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville, an online shooter based on the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Choose from 20 different classes and either challenge other players in competitive Arena battles or face hordes of enemies in PvE modes.

Nacon’s Tennis World Tour 2 is the third free game in August and sees players partaking in tennis battles. Either create your own character or choose a pro. Compete in Casual and Ranked games to climb the rankings or simply take on friends in local and online matches. There’s even a Career Mode for building up your own team, gathering staff and sponsors to find success in the world of pro tennis.

All of these titles will be available from the PlayStation Store on August 3rd.

The multiplayer shooter is finally making its way to the Switch.

Owing to its very nature, Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville is a game that seems perfectly suited to the Switch, which is why it’s been baffling that even over a year on from its launch, it still isn’t available on Nintendo’s hybrid console. Well, that’s going to be rectified soon. As the rumours would have had you believe, the multiplayer shooter is headed to the Switch soon.

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville – Complete Edition will launch for the Switch in March, and as its name suggests, it will include the base game, as well as all post-launch content that has been released for it, and retail for a price of $39.99. The game also adds support for gyro controls on the Switch.

“We are excited to bring everyone’s favorite Plants vs. Zombies characters to Nintendo Switch for the first time, giving players the ability to play in their homes or on the go, however they choose,” producer Melvin Teo said in a press release. “The Switch’s motion controls allow us to try a fresh new take on Neighborville, and with its docked and portable play, we have the ability to bring the game and its characters to life in ways that weren’t possible before.”

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville is currently available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and launches for the Switch on March 19. You can read our review of the game through here.

A new report reveals the full extent of EA's upcoming support for Nintendo's platform.

EA seem to have taken notice of the Switch’s large install base, and it looks like their support for the system will be improving significantly in the coming months. At their recent EA Play show, they confirmed that they had seven Switch releases planned for the coming 12 months. Of those seven, four have been revealed, those being the recently released Burnout Paradise Remastered, the recently announced Switch port of Apex Legends, the EA Originals title Lost in Random, and FIFA 21 (or a Legacy Edition, at any rate).

Now, a report by GamesBeat’s Jeff Grubb has possibly lifted the lid on the three remaining EA titles releasing on the Switch in the coming months. As per the report, Lost in Random isn’t the only EA Originals title that will be coming to the Switch, with another unannounced title developed by Velan Studios – an indie team founded by former Vicarious Visions staff – also coming to the platform.

Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville – which came out for PS4, Xbox One, and PC late last year is also reportedly headed to Nintendo’s hybrid. Finally, a remaster of the 2010 Criterion-developed Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit will also be launching on the Switch. You can read more on that through here.

Until such time EA makes any official announcements, it’s best not to take this as confirmation, but given Grubb’s track record with leaks, there’s plenty of credibility to this report. Either way, we’ll keep you updated as this story develops, so stay tuned.

Somebody get me a salad.

The first mini-quest Plants vs. Zombies sends me on is to use the game’s slot machine. Equipped with exactly the right amount of coins from Major Sweetie – the most cheerful sunflower ever, who also really likes it when things explode – I walked over to the machine, naturally situated conveniently near the place you spawn in Team Plant’s home base, and dump my coins in. It’s very expensive to use the slot machine. A single plays costs about 30,000 coins. As my money disappears, and the enormous Mr. Reward-O-Tron 9000 spins down a cosmetic for me, I stand in awe of how blatant this game’s monetization will be.

You can’t just buy the cosmetics you want with in-game currency, no, no, no. That would be too easy, and so is reserved for the game’s microtransactions. Microtransactions aren’t in the game yet, but they will be soon, allowing players to visit Rux’s Emporium and purchase the pieces they want, no slot machine required. It seems EA has figured out how to get people to open their wallets: deny them the ability to get what they want unless they pony up for it. This is character customization in the modern video game: if you want something, you’ll have to pay extra for it, or hope you get lucky. The fact that this system was employed in a game marketed primarily to children is particularly troubling.

I could go on and on about the evils of microtransactions, but unfortunately that is simply the reality of the industry. As long as putting systems like these into games continues to make publishers hundreds of millions of dollars (see: FIFA Ultimate Team), they will continue to do it. It’s possible to play and enjoy Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville despite this, but the game’s goal is obvious from the jump: to part you from your money for a cool hat. Or several.

This is a shame, because the core of Battle for Neighborville is a solid game. It’s essentially Garden Warfare 3, though why EA decided to drop that subtitle for one that is far, far worse is a mystery that will remain locked in their marketing department. The major difference here is that Battle for Neighborville introduces PVE content into what has been a series built on PVP. Both Team Plants and Team Zombies have their own separate hub areas where you can customize your character, acquire upgrades, hang out with other players, and even play a couple mini-games. There’s even an amusement park sandwiched between them, so you can hang out with members of the other team and practice your combat skills in a stress-free environment. The team hubs also your gateway to the game’s other modes. They’re pretty dense areas that can be confusing to navigate at first, but once you get used to them, the way they’re set up makes sense. They’re also quite charming. You also don’t have to use them for them. Things like switching teams and character customization can be accessed by pressing start.

After your finish the eight introductory quests, which will teach you how to navigate the hubs, use emotes, play mini-games, character characters, and gamble your money away in the aforementioned slot machine for items you may or may not want, you can jump into the game’s other modes. There are three PVE modes in all: Mount Steep (plants), Weirding Woods (zombies), and Town Center (both). Each has quests to do, areas to explore, and bosses to fight. There are even small storylines to complete. These areas can be done with any available character, and can be played solo or with friends.

"The big issue is the quests themselves, which are so bog standard it’s hard to have any investment in them. When one of your opening quests is an escort mission (and the thing you escort is a lawnmower), you know you’re not dealing with inspired quest design."

While it’s nice that this game includes all this stuff, I didn’t find any of it particularly impressive. The zones themselves are cool and pretty big, and the writing is meant to be silly (though your mileage will vary. I was mostly annoyed). Even the boss fights are pretty good. The big issue is the quests themselves, which are so bog standard it’s hard to have any investment in them. When one of your opening quests is an escort mission (and the thing you escort is a lawnmower), you know you’re not dealing with inspired quest design. This is made worse by the fact that your standard NPC enemies just aren’t very fun to fight. The upgraded enemies can be, but when much of your opposition is canon fodder, it just isn’t very interesting. I’m not saying that there’s nothing of value here, but I have a hard time believing most players will be into Battle for Neighborville for its PVE long term.

PVP fares better. It’s still a class-based shooter in the vein of Team Fortress 2 or Overwatch, though the variants system from the previous game has been abandoned. There are 20 characters total, divided into attack, defense, and support, and each side has three new additions. The zombies have the Electric Slide, a roller skating, lighting gun wielding maniac, the bow wielding, heavy damage 80s Action Hero, and the Space Cadet, who can transform their small vehicle into a larger one and combine into a larger unit with other Space Cadets. The plants, meanwhile, gain the ninja-esque Night Cap, the fire-breathing, up close and personal Snapdragon, and the Acorn, who can transform into the mighty Oak, and have three Acorns ride along with him. All characters have also gained the ability to sprint, making them more elusive.

Characters can also spend a set amount of points to equip upgrades, all of which do different things, and have different point costs depending on what they do. It’s a neat little tweak that allows you to tailor your picks to your playstyle. More are available as you level up, but you’ve got a good smattering from the jump. Character balance is elusive at this point, as is hit detection, which doesn’t feel 100% right. The addition of sprint is nice, but running speed also feels a bit off, too. I could never quite tell how fast I was going to get somewhere, and the animations often oversold a speed the characters didn’t possess. I imagine a lot of this will be worked out as time goes on, but the game doesn’t feel as good as it probably should yet.

You can’t respawn once killed, and once you’ve picked a character, you can’t use them again for the duration of the match. It makes from some cool, tense moments similar to execution in Gears of War, and it forces you to use multiple characters."

The modes fare better, even if many of them are similar to modes in other games. There’s a tower defense mode, a couple of objective modes, and basic deathmatch. One cool variation is Battle Arena, which is a series of 4v4 rounds. You can’t respawn once killed, and once you’ve picked a character, you can’t use them again for the duration of the match. It makes from some cool, tense moments similar to execution in Gears of War, and it forces you to use multiple characters. Turf Takeover is another winner; it’s a 12v12 mode on huge maps that feature multiple modes. You’ll have to push payloads, capture points, and complete often absurd final objectives, like delivering bombs to the enemy base while dodging falling marshmallows. It reminds me of Overwatch or Star Wars: Battlefront, and I had a lot of fun playing it.

And of course, the game has charm. Whether it’s the individual animations, absurd character designs, or the environments, Battle for Neighborville delivers a unique and fun visual style. The real issue is that, as fun and silly as any of this is, none of it is memorable, or particularly stands out. If you’ve played a Plants vs. Zombies game up until this point, or a team-based, objective shooter like Overwatch, all of this is going to feel very, very familiar. None of it is bad, per se, but none of it is particularly good, either. It just kind of is. Battle for Neighborville is kind of like junk food. It’s fun enough while you’re playing it, and the instant you stop, it vanishes from your mind. Still, it’s just good enough to keep eating. I don’t think Battle for Neighborville is good enough to win over a lot of new fans. The PVE additions aren’t good enough to attract new fans, and the PVP, a few new characters aside, is more or less the same. If EA wants to get people to spend money on their microtransactions, they should probably provide something a little more filling.

Though available in early access for founders, Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville officially launched on October 18th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. While there’s plenty of hijinks to be had in mutliplayer, you can find plenty of secrets by exploring your surroundings. These secrets include the Diamond Gnomes and Golden Invoices.

Diamond Gnome Locations

The first Diamond Gnome can be found in Pressure Pier. There will be a rundown ship on the beach – move past that and find a cliff with a cave entrance on the left side. Once inside, you should find the Diamond Gnome surrounded by water. Use the different platforms and pillars to reach it.

The second Diamond Gnome is in Up-Down-Uptown – equip the Mindblower before heading there. Get to the Museum and check the left side for stairs which lead to a tunnel. There’s a Zombie Guard present but the Mindblower will take it down.

Next up is an Unyielding Gnight with some additional goons. In order to damage the Gnight, you need to take down the guards with the Mindblower and activate the blue circles. Once a circle is activated, you can deal damage to the Gnight. After the Gnight is dead, you can claim the second Diamond Gnome.

The third Diamond Gnome requires some puzzle-solving. Head to the spawn at the Town Center. Go right until you eventually reach a cliff. To the right should be a tunnel entrance – take down the Zombie Guard first with the Mindblower and go inside. Once there, you’ll find four shapes – a flamingo, some gears, an hourglass, and the gnome’s face – which are manipulated with different buttons.

For the flamingo, press the first button twice. Then press the second button once followed by pressing the third and fourth buttons twice each. For the gears, hit the first button three times, then the second button twice and the third button once. Finish off by pressing the fourth button once.

With the hourglass, you need to press the first button three times, the second button twice, and the third button twice. Head to the fourth button and press it three times. Do the same for the fifth and sixth buttons. Finally, hit the seventh and eighth buttons once apiece.

For the gnome’s face, you need to press the first button three times, the second, third and fourth buttons twice apiece, and the fifth button three times. Press the sixth, seventh and eighth buttons once apiece and huzzah, you get the third Diamond Gnome.

Golden Invoice Locations

There are six Golden Invoices to find which can provide coins and items for equipping. You’ll need to locate telescopes which point to each Invoice first. These will mark the spots containing the actual Invoices.

For the first Invoice, go to Up-Down-Uptown. Look for a pier near a waterfall – a telescope will be at the top. Once you look through it, there should be an Invoice at the marked spot. Head there and dig it up.

The second Invoice is close to Sundrop Hill. Head to the town close by and find a home with a platform. Head to the top, locate the telescope, find the spot and dig up the Invoice.

The third Invoice can be found in Up-Down-Uptown. Go to the suburbs and look for a race track. You’ll find some red and green train carts – the telescope should be on the red cart. Look through it for the spot and subsequent Invoice.

But wait, you’re not done with Up-Down-Uptown yet. Go to the north part of town and look for a taco sign that’s spinning. See the building next to it? Head to the roof for the telescope and find the fourth Invoice.

The fifth Invoice is located by heading east where the lighthouse is located. You’ll also see some shacks nearby but what you’re actually looking for is a platform by the beach. There’s a telescope on it which will lead to the next Invoice.

The sixth and final Invoice is located in the city’s eastern-most part. Look for the old ruins and locate the caves nearby. A telescope is present right next to the entrance and will lead to the last Invoice.
