Red Dead Redemption 2

It’s incredible to revisit Red Dead Redemption 2, especially in light of the greedy re-release of the first game. The attention to detail, visuals, presentation, pacing and characterization are still on another level after all these years. The Van der Linde gang’s agonizing fall was a compelling story, told from the perspective of Arthur Morgan, an incredible protagonist. That’s without experiencing all of the activities and stories the world offered when you weren’t skipping baths for several days or committing dishonorable acts.

While finding an audience for a new game in the franchise would be difficult, Kirkhope also believes that a new Banjo-Kazooie game would need the right team to make it work.

“I feel like you’d have to get a team with the humour that we had back then and that’s hard to replicate,” said Kirkhope. “I think Rare would be open to somebody if they found the right team, but I don’t feel like that team exists. Also, I’m not convinced the audience is there either.”

The Banjo-Kazooie franchise has been largely dormant since the release of Rare Replay back in 2015. While Rare Replay was a collection of remastered older games, however, the most recent “new” Banjo-Kazooie game would be Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, which was released back in 2008 on the Xbox 360.

Over time, rumours have swirled around of a potential revival of the iconic 3D platforming franchise, especially in light of the success of Spyro: Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time.

The only ways to play Banjo-Kazooie on modern system would be to either subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online to play the original Nintendo 64 version, or to grab Rare Replay on Xbox One to play a remaster.

Released in 1997 and based on the James Bond film of the same name, GoldenEye 007 supports online multiplayer on the Switch. The Xbox versions are confined to local split-screen multiplayer but offer alternate controls, native 16:9 resolution support, 4K Ultra HD and Achievements.

Along with the memorable campaign, there’s the multiplayer, which arguably revolutionized console FPS multiplayer. It features numerous maps and characters from across the franchise and some unique modes like The Man With the Golden Gun, which features a one-shot kill weapon in the level. License to Kill is a more straightforward hardcore-style mode where every weapon is a one-hit kill.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S players can still experience local multiplayer with split-screen support. Alternate control options, Achievements, native 16:9 resolution support and up to 4K Ultra HD resolution are also available. Furthermore, those who own Rare Replay can download GoldenEye 007 free of charge.

Released in 1997, GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooting classic based on the film of the same name. It sees James Bond trying to stop a dangerous satellite called Goldeneye. He eventually runs into a ghost from his past, among other threats. In addition to various weapons, the classic Bond gadgets – like the wristwatch laser – are here.

Despite an incredible campaign, the shooter is renowned for its multiplayer with different modes, settings, characters and levels. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

Sunset Overdrive

Sunset Overdrive’s vivid art-style would look absolutely phenomenal in 4K and 60 FPS. Currently, the game runs at 900p and 30 FPS and while the Xbox Series X’s Auto HDR makes it pop, a proper optimization patch would go a long way. Given that Sony owns the rights to the IP, this may seem like a pipe-dream – at least on Xbox consoles – but we can still hope.

Crackdown 3

Okay, so Crackdown 3 isn’t the greatest open world game out there. But it offers a decently sized city with plenty to blow up and lots of different things to do. The Skills for Kills system encourages taking down foes with a variety of weapons and abilities, and hunting down different crime bosses while laying waste to their businesses can be mindless fun. It’s Crackdown-rific, and that may work for certain people.

Microsoft has announced four new games for its Xbox Game Pass service, two which are available right now. These are Capcom’s Resident Evil: Revelations and Rare Replay, the latter being a collection of 30 classic Rare games. You can download and play them right now if you’re currently subscribed to Xbox Game Pass (at $9.99 per month).

The other two games are inXile’s Torment: Tides of Numenera and Coffee Stain Studios’ Goat Simulator, which will be joining the service on June 27th. The former is a follow-up to the critically acclaimed Planescape: Torment and offers a surreal old-school RPG experience. Meanwhile, Goat Simulator lets you play as a goat, as the name implies, but things quickly take a weird turn.

Xbox Game Pass recently launched for PC, and Microsoft also introduced Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at E3 2019. The latter allows subscribers to get Xbox Game Pass for PC and Xbox One along with Xbox Live Gold for a month at $14.99. If you subscribe for the first month, it’s only $1.

Dr. Breen – Half Life 2

When the Combine came down to take earth, it was the diplomacy of Dr. Breen that ensured that the human race would survive, if as a slave race to the aliens. Or were his intentions so noble? The unsettling tone and persona of Dr. Breen and his convenient appointment to Earth’s Administrator by the Combine really lean into suggesting that the good doctor screwed you and all of humanity for his own, selfish ends of ruling earth, even if it is as a defacto leader.

Cuphead

The highly-praised, cup-tastic run and gun platformer Cuphead first earned notoriety for being exclusive to the Xbox One (later confirmed for Windows 10 and Steam as well). Its challenging gameplay would be another distinguishing factor but Cuphead stands out for many reasons. The Rubber hose animation style is unique and calls back to cartoons of the 40s while the boss design is great, actually leveraging the graphics to deliver compelling gameplay. If you haven’t, then Cuphead is definitely worth getting into despite its challenge.

In the Nintendo 64 days, Rare was legendary- Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie. Donkey Kong 64. Diddy Kong Racing. Conker’s bad Fur Day. Perfect Dark. Goldeneye 007. And Jet Force Gemini– they just made so many incredible games, one after the other, that they almost single handedly bolstered the N64 library and made the console worth owning.

The biggest tragedy of Rare’s sale to Microsoft was that almost none of these IPs were developed further on the Xbox- while Perfect, Conker, and Banjo all saw new (less successful) entries on Xbox, most of Rare’s old properties fell by the wayside.

Thankfully, over the last year or so, Microsoft has been working at tapping into this old Rare heritage- last year, we saw the announcement of a brand new Rare game, Sea of Thieves, which looks like it has the potential to be something special in the tradition of the best old Rare games. We also Microsoft celebrate Rare’s past with the release of Rare Replay, which had 30 years’ worth of great Rare games in the same package. And now, it seems like they may also be reviving Rare’s cult classic third person shooter, Jet Force Gemini.

Microsoft filed a trademark for the name in November– this might be considered to be standard business procedure to retain ownership of the IP name, but as DualShockers points out, the interesting bit here is that Microsoft does not in fact have a trademark on all of Rare’s old games, not even all of the ones that showed up in Rare Replay. Does this indicate some interest on Microsoft’s part to revive the classic shooter?

I genuinely hope so. Jet Force Gemini was great in some of the best ways- and playing games like the Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive only reminded me how badly I would want to play something like it again.
