An insider report says the game has been canned, but also that it was not the rumored Switch title, which may or may not still be in active development.

The Resident Evil series is one of the most consistent, and consistently releasing, series on the planet right now. This year we got both the excellent Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 VR. We know there’s plenty in the pipeline as well, since we basically know that a full remake of RE4 is also in development. Today, we also got some more information about a potential other game, but it’s not all good news.

Earlier this year, due to a big leak from Capcom as well as insider rumors, we got word of a project in the works called Resident Evil Outrage (it’s unclear if this would have been the final name). Early rumors stated the game was a timed Switch exclusive starring Rebecca Chambers, a prominent character in the original Resident Evil and later Resident Evil 0. However, a new report from known Nintendo insider NateDrake, seems to indicate that game is no longer around, but also that it wasn’t what was stated originally.

On the Famiboards forums, Drake told people it was best to forget about Resident Evil Outrage. When questioned about that, he said that while the project may still exist in some form, the game as it was once known is officially canceled. He also said that despite earlier reports, the game was multiplayer-based and not the game referenced above. As far as the Switch title, he said it was an entirely different project from Outrage, but that he was unsure if the Switch title was still in active development. You can see Drake’s comments here, here and finally here.

While Resident Evil Outrage was never officially announced, we have to file all of this under rumor. It’s possible we may never know the full truth about what Outrage was or wasn’t. As of now, though, it looks likely that whatever it was has been put to rest or merged into a different project.

Starring Rebecca Chambers, set (at least partially) in a college campus, and supposedly primed for a reveal not long from now, according to a new report.

We first started hearing about Resident Evil Outrage – which is allegedly what Capcom is calling Resident Evil Revelations 3 – amidst the massive ransomware leak that leaked out a whole slate of unannounced Capcom games. Allegedly a Switch-first third person game starring Rebecca Chambers, reports have claimed that it is the next Resident Evil game in line for launch, with a reveal supposedly scheduled after Village’s launch.

Now, a new report by Biohazardcast has compiled new details on the game that have allegedly emerged from a recent playtest. Several details from previous reports are corroborated, such as the game being third person and starring Rebecca Chambers. The playtest in question was set in a college campus, where Rebecca is investigating the creation of a new virus. The opening section of the playtest took place in an open area where the player could talk around and interact with various students.

Students and teachers in the campus that have been infected are similar to the Majini from Resident Evil 5 and attack Rebecca with “school-based” weapons, while Rebecca herself is apparently quite vulnerable to attacks (which might suggest the existence of a health upgrade system) and starts out only with a knife in her arsenal, in true Resident Evil fashion.

The playtest took Rebecca to a library in the college, where she is attacked by an infected student with a pair of scissors, at which point she has the option to either run or attack the enemy. Defeating it yields a locker key, though it is unknown what for. Throughout the playtest, the player could also explore other room, such as labs, classrooms, bathrooms, and a cafeteria.

Allegedly, the playtest was running on a Nintendo Switch, with the game using the RE Engine, further corroborating previous reports. Biohazardcast’s report states that the game is going to be announced at or around E3, and will release in Fall 2021- though it’s worth noting that COVID-related development troubles could have delayed that date. For what it’s worth, previous reports have suggested that a game is targeting a late 2021/early 2022 launch.

All of this unconfirmed and unverified, so take it with a grain of salt for now. Apparently, we might get details soon enough, so we might not have to wait long to know for sure one way or another. Capcom’s E3 2021 presentation is scheduled for later today, at 2:30 PM PT, while Nintendo’s E3 Direct is set for June 15, at 9 AM PT. We’ll be covering both live, so stay tuned for all announcements and updates.

Nintendo has been quiet way too long now...

E3 is back this year after a hiatus in 2020, but much of what we might see in its big comeback remains a mystery. While we know that a lot of big companies plan on hawking their wares at the online-only event, any further specifics are much murkier. On one level, that obviously makes things significantly more exciting – after all, being surprised by game announcements is often the best kind of hype that fans of this medium can have. But on the other, for those who like to obsess over every tease and pore over hints and, this lack of anything concrete can be a bit unnerving.

However, the truth is, even though we may lack concrete leaks and rumours, there have been rumblings in the last few months – those, coupled with the application of some basic common sense, can help us figure out what we may be about to see soon come E3 in early June. We already had a look at what we might be able to expect from Microsoft’s event at E3 recently. Now let’s take a look at what we hope to see from the other big platform holder bringing the hype to the big annual convention this year.

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND UPDATES ON THIRD PARTY GAMES

The Nintendo Switch has seen an incredible amount of uptake with third parties, which has finally started to manifest in the form of some big name exclusives for the platform in the last few years. Right now, it doesn’t seem like that’s about to stop any time soon either. We already know major upcoming third party games are scheduled for the system, such as Shin Megami Tensei V, Monster Hunter Stories 2, and Triangle Strategy; there’s every possibility we get more information on each of those at E3 as well, including, presumably, a release date (or at least month) for Shin Megami Tensei V, which Nintendo and Atlus promised last year would get a full simultaneous release this year.

That apart, E3 2021 would also be the right time for Capcom to announce Resident Evil Outrage, the new Resident Evil title that Capcom has developed for the Switch as a lead platform, and which Nintendo apparently has marketing rights for. It’s unclear whether or not the game is a Switch timed exclusive – we know that others versions of the game exist, but we’re not entirely clear on whether or not they’ll launch alongside the Switch version. Regardless of the status of those other versions, the Switch version is, by all accounts, due out early next year, and due to be announced very soon now that Village is released, and Capcom is no longer concerned with focusing marketing on it. Now would be the time for us to see it, and it would be a pretty impressive announcement, too.

NEW FIRST PARTY GAME ANNOUNCEMENTS

Nintendo’s first party teams have been very quiet for a while; we know they’ve been working on a lot of upcoming games for the back half of this year, a lot of which got pushed back because of COVID-19, but after such a long period of silence from the company, it may be time to lift the curtain – at least a little. For example, a new 2D Metroid game has been rumoured to be in development for a long time now – apparently it even finished development a while ago. And what reason Nintendo may have had for holding it back (if it exists) is unclear, but if the game is real, announcing it at E3 for a release date for later this year will win Nintendo a lot of goodwill. Metroid is a franchise with a lot of cachet with enthusiast fans of the medium, and the IP has been dormant for a good while – unveiling a new 2D game will probably help placate fans who are getting antsy owing to the prolonged development cycle of Metroid Prime 4, as well as those are perplexed at the continual absence of Metroid Prime Trilogy from the platform.

We might get to see the next Monolith Soft title as well. Whatever that game is, even if it’s a new concept entirely, is likely to be branded Xenoblade, given that we have been told by Monolith Soft themselves that Nintendo is hoping to build that brand as a core pillar; that said, it’s not entirely necessary we see that game this year at E3. While Monolith’s last full fledged release was almost four years ago, since then they have released two expansion-sized games, one remaster, and continue to assist on the development of other Nintendo titles as well.

Finally, we have heard that Nintendo apparently went ahead and acquired the full stake to the Astral Chain IP. The original game, which launched in 2019, was fairly well received, and went on to sell over a million copies. It was also envisioned as the first game in a trilogy, so there is every possibility that more games are planned – and if they are, maybe we can see something this E3 from that? This one is a bit of a long shot, unlike the other possibilities raised so far, but since Nintendo was actively pursuing stakes in the IP as recently as a few months ago, who knows?

DONKEY KONG

One big rumoured first party game announcement from Nintendo is Donkey Kong. A brand new Donkey Kong platform developed not by Retro, or any other outsourced partner, but Nintendo EPD themselves. EPD is, of course, the master of platforming games, and seeing them tackle Nintendo’s resident primate for the first time ever is an exciting proposition-particularly since the same team that got us Super Mario Odyssey is supposed to be working on Donkey Kong as well.

What’s even more exciting is that at least one of these rumours pegs this new game as being a 3D platformer. We haven’t had a 3D Donkey Kong game in over 20 years, so you can imagine why that prospect is so mouth watering to so many fans of platforms and Donkey Kong alike. The rumours peg this game as releasing later this year, so Nintendo can’t really announce it any later than at E3 – which means we may be about to see the big gorillas triumphant homecoming in very short order.

UPDATES ON PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED AND RELEASED GAMES

While Nintendo hasn’t made a lot of major announcements for first party games in a while, there still are a few that have been announced ahead of E3 that we will probably see at E3 this year. Splatoon 3 is due to launch next year, and we can probably expect to see it get at least a bit of a blowout at Nintendo’s event. Mario Golf and Skyward Sword HD are both due to launch just a bit after E3, which means we are almost certainly getting to see more of those during Nintendo’s show as well. And while Pokemon typically holds its own event separately from Nintendo, upcoming Pokemon games still do get featured in Nintendo’s E3 events – even if only as passing mentions. Which means we can probably expect to see at the very least Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, if not Pokemon Legends: Arceus as well, come Nintendo’s E3 show.

Beyond that, we will probably also get some announcements of updates for existing games. A new update for Animal Crossing New Horizon being detailed at the show is probably a given, and we will almost certainly see the announcement of the next character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as well (though who knows who that will be at this point). The last few E3 character announcements for Smash have really brought the hype, though – Ridley in 2018, and Hero and Banjo Kazooie in 2019. So whoever it is who ends up getting announced this year will probably be a pretty big deal as well.

UPDATED GLIMPSES AT METROID PRIME 4 AND BAYONETTA 3?

This one is honestly more pie in the sky than anything. We know both games are in development, but neither are presumably due for release any time soon. Metroid Prime 4 restarted development in 2019, and while that’s been enough time for Retro Studios to show off something, it’s also important to remember that most of the time since has been spent in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and so development may simply not be as far along as we may expect or want or like. Hopefully, they’re able to show us a short glimpse at the game, but CG trailers are typically not Nintendo’s style, so hopefully the game is in a state where some gameplay footage can be shown off – even if Nintendo is not willing to commit to a release, well, year, for now.

Bayonetta 3 is also in a similar situation. While we don’t have as many specific insights into its development, we do have reason to suspect it’s been rougher than expected, and with COVID disrupting that as well, it’s not as much of a given that we’ll get to see it as it may have been in other circumstances. That said, hopefully Platinum do have something to show us for it – even a short trailer will probably go a long way towards placating fan concerns.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD 2

This one is an absolute, total shoe in. The new Zelda game will be shown off at Nintendo’s E3 event, and presumably, it will be given a final name and a release window as well. It’s unclear when that release window might be – while originally I would have insisted on it releasing as Nintendo’s Holiday game this year, and to align with Zelda‘s 35th anniversary, Nintendo has shown no sign of actually acknowledging that anniversary, and, well, we have rumblings (as well as basic common sense) suggesting that COVID may have delayed its development, and that it may be likelier to launch next year – presumably early next year – than this one.

Regardless of when it’s releasing, though, we do expect to get a good look at the game. We’ll presumably get the setup for its story, see what the major hook for this game is, see how the gameplay and mechanics have evolved since Breath of the Wild, and see how the world map has changed as well. It’s likely to be among the most exciting things shown off at E3 this year – I just hope that it’s also, against all odds, confirmed for a release this year too.

WHAT WON’T BE THERE

While it’s not necessarily within the scope of this discussion, it’s probably not a bad idea to step back from the hype and calibrate expectations to rule out things that will almost certainly not be at E3 this year. The most obvious one – Hollow Knight Silksong. The follow up to Team Cherry’s seminal metroidvania game is launching exclusively on PC and Switch, and while it, too, has been long in the coming, Team Cherry has explicitly confirmed the game will not be shown off at E3 this year. So… that sucks, but strike it off the list.

The rumours that continue to circulate about a new Mario Kart game are also almost certainly just those, rumours, and a new Mario Kart game is extremely unlikely to be launched on the Switch, given how Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to break every sales record in the book more than four years from its release. While, obviously, one day a new Mario Kart game will exist, it will probably be held back for the Switch successor – not the Switch Pro, the Switch 2, proper, presumably in hopes of recreating the kind of early push the Switch got from Mario Kart.

Speaking of which – the Switch Pro. I’m reasonably confident this thing exists. I’m sure it’s launching this year too, in fact. But that said, do not expect it to be at E3 this year. There are several reasons for this – the most important one is that Nintendo does not, and has never, announced a system revision at E3 (or, well, not since the days of the Gameboy Advance, more than 20 years ago). Nintendo typically tends to announce these revisions a few weeks out from release at the most – the Switch Lite, as one example, was announced just a little over two months from release, and conspicuously and decidedly not at E3. Even if the Switch Pro is real, and due to launch this year, it will probably get announced independently a bit down the line – I’d expect late June, early July at the earliest, and late August at the latest.

Which means even when E3 is done, Nintendo fans will have a lot to look forward to this year.

Prominent RE insider Dusk Golem spills the beans on the game that is supposed to be Resident Evil Revelations 3 in all but name.

The recent Capcom ransomware leak revealed the company’s plans for a large number of upcoming games over the next few years. Multiple Resident Evil games were leaked in the process, one of which is supposedly called Resident Evil Outrage– which, according to prominent Resident Evil insider Dusk Golem (a.k.a. AestheticGamer) is Revelations 3 in all but name, and will be a Switch-focused entry starring Rebecca Chambers as the protagonist.

Recently, in a series of tweets, Dusk Golem revealed several more potential details on the upcoming as-of-yet-unannounced titled. According to him, Resident Evil Outrage is going to be a timed exclusive for the Switch at launch, but that it will eventually be coming to other platforms as well, and will be a cross-gen release- so series fans can expect it to arrive on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One as well.

As you’d expect, Outrage is supposedly being built using the RE Engine, the way every entry in the series has been since the engine was debuted with Resident Evil 7 in 2017. According to Dusk Golem though (once again, as you’d expect), it’s being developed using a modified Switch-specific version of the engine, similar to the upcoming Switch exclusive Monster Hunter Rise.

He also re-iterates that Rebecca Chambers – who last appeared as a playable character in Resident Evil 0 – will be the protagonist, while also stating that she will be joined by two more protagonists, both of whom are supposedly going to be returning characters.

Meanwhile, Resident Evil Outrage is supposedly a pretty big production. According to the leaker, it has been in development for about four years, and it’s budget has far exceeded that of both Revelations and Revelations 2- supposedly even coming close to the budget of the upcoming Resident Evil Village itself. He suspects this is one of the reasons why Capcom probably won’t end up not calling it Revelations 3 (even though it was supposedly Revelations 3 at one point in development). As per Dusk Golem, Resident Evil Outrage’s production and development scope is similar in nature to that of Code: Veronica- which, of course, was essentially Resident Evil 3 in all but name.

As for when the game will be revealed and released, apparently, we don’t have to wait too long. Dusk Golem says that the game is probably going to be announced a few months after Resident Evil Village’s launch in May, as part of the series’ 25th anniversary celebrations. It will allegedly launch not long after that- either late this year, or in early 2022.

As is the case with any leak, you should take all of this information with a grain of salt for now, even though Dusk Golem’s proven to be a reliable leaker in the past, especially when it comes to Resident Evil. We’ll keep you updated should we learn any new details, so stay tuned.

(2/2) very least. Releases as part of their 25th anniversary celebrations, along with Village, almost definitely going to be a Switch timed exclusive.

But that'll be announced later this year, for now Village is deserving of the attention, and out in just a few months now!

Reports say that development is "partially" rebooted but is there reason to worry?

Resident Evil Village garnered headlines for the past week with Capcom announcing a release date, confirming a release for the Xbox One and PS4 versions, and even unveiling yet another multiplayer mode that hardcore fans don’t want. However, even with all the big announcements made, something felt conspicuously absent. Given that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the Resident Evil series, one had to wonder – Where was the Resident Evil 4 Remake?

To be clear, Capcom has never formally announced that said remake is in development. It didn’t tease an appearance for the showcase and hasn’t even hinted at its existence. If things had remained quiet, we would have assumed that development is still on-going. The project’s existence is hardly a secret, especially since the Capcom data leak confirmed it’s in the works, but we could still pretend.

However, a report from VideoGamesChronicle revealed that the Resident Evil 4 Remake has been rebooted. Numerous sources revealed to the site that M-Two, which developed Resident Evil 3 Remake, had its role reduced following a project review last year. The reason for this is apparently due to disagreements with how the project should proceed. M-Two wanted a more faithful remake, especially since one of the major complaints for Resident Evil 3 Remake is how it didn’t have certain memorable moments from the classic. On the other hand is Capcom, which is looking for a more unique experience that doesn’t closely follow the original, like Resident Evil 2 Remake.

Keep in mind that this isn’t exactly new information. Prominent leaker AestheticGamer reported Capcom’s interest in expanding on the original game back in June 2020. The company was looking to greatly expand on the original game’s story, including possibly offering more information on Dr. Salvador, the infamous Chainsaw Man. While the gameplay was noted to be seeing some changes, these would have placed it closer in line to the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes. However, one interesting bit that AestheticGamer added was that a lot could still change before launch.

This indicates two things – One, the Resident Evil 4 Remake was indeed in the works since 2018, as rumors have reported, but on a smaller scale. Given that Capcom was also busy working on the other remakes, this makes some degree of sense. Two, development would have ramped up following M-Two’s completion of Resident Evil 3 Remake, which is around the same time that rumors of it being involved in a larger remake project began to swell. Even reports from last year indicated that Resident Evil 4 Remake would be launching in 2022. If you look at the time-frame for Resident Evil 2 Remake – which was confirmed to be in development in 2015 and subsequently released in 2019 – then a four to five year cycle doesn’t sound too strange, especially for what’s meant to be a “larger” remake.

The question now, then, is why did Capcom reboot the project? If it’s indeed looking to make wholesale changes, then to what end? One could argue that a remake that’s too similar to the original couldn’t be marketed on its own appeal. Meanwhile, M-Two’s approach seems to indicate that it wants to stick to a more faithful title to appease fans rather than thinking outside the box. It’s possible that Capcom just really loves how the Resident Evil 2 Remake turned out in terms of gameplay. It also could like the slower-paced survival horror approach where ammo must be carefully managed than latter additions in the franchise, like Resident Evil 4 and 5. Of course, with over 7.2 million copies sold, there’s no faulting the company for wanting subsequent remakes to take that same approach.

If M-Two insisted on sticking to Resident Evil 4’s original formula as much as possible, then it wold have caused friction with Capcom. Whether the publisher having games that follow Resident Evil 2 Remake is a good sign or not, especially when it could mean that content from the classics is not included, is a question for the creatives in charge. Even if Resident Evil 3 Remake caught criticism for the same, the fact that it sold 3.6 million in less than a year is a big deal.

Of course, there’s also the issue as to why Capcom feels so comfortable giving the game another year for development. The reasons for this are numerous – Resident Evil 4 is one of the company’s best-selling titles of all-time, raking in tons of awards and being credited for its innovations in the horror and third person shooter space. To say that Capcom wants the remake to do it justice – and naturally outsell it by a healthy margin – would be an understatement.

But there’s also the fact that the company isn’t sweating its current roster of releases. Resident Evil Village has had an incredibly good reception and seems on track to sell exceptionally well (especially since it’s launching for current and previous-gen platforms). The company can also expect DLC to fetch additional revenue in the long-term like Not a Hero and The End of Zoe did for Resident Evil 7, even if it’s not a crazy amount. There’s also the matter of Resident Evil Outrage, another title mentioned in the infamous Capcom leak that’s rumored to be Resident Evil Revelations 3 in all but name and stars Rebecca Chambers.

The game is rumored to launch on Nintendo Switch and other platforms as well. With the current demand for Monster Hunter Rise on the Switch (which is also rumored to be coming to PC later), it’s expected that Outrage will also perform spectacularly, both at launch and when it releases for other consoles. All in all, Capcom is set with its Resident Evil release schedule for the next two years and that’s not even accounting for other titles it could announce.

There’s always going to be concern over a title’s development, especially one that’s reportedly been in the works for as long as Resident Evil 4 Remake and with so many expectations riding on it. At this point, Capcom’s approach of not discussing the game is working out very well. It already has major releases which are receiving plenty of focus, and that are more or less guaranteed to deliver outstanding returns.

It doesn’t need to confirm the existence of a title which it doesn’t feel is anywhere near ready to be shown. Because once you reveal, for example, that a game like Metroid Prime 4 or Bayonetta 3 is in development, the hype train will be rolling even if years go by without any major announcements or new details.

For now, it’s best to wait until the game is in a complete enough state before announcing it. It’s worked well enough for Resident Evil Village and Monster Hunter Rise which are releasing in the coming months. We’ll just have to wait and see if this works out for Resident Evil 4 Remake when all is said and done.

Insider says the game is Revelations 3 "for all intents and purposes."

A recent Capcom leak has seen the Japanese publisher’s detailed plans for upcoming releases over the next fear years out in the wild, spilling the beans on a number of games that are yet to be announced. Several unannounced Resident Evil games have been leaked as a result. One of these, called Resident Evil Outrage in the leaks, was recently pegged as the third game in the Revelations sub-series by known Resident Evil insider and leaker Dusk Golem, who’s now revealed some more potential details on the game.

Taking to ResetEra, Dusk Golem reiterated that Outrage is Resident Evil Revelations 3, and even though the game might not be called that when it releases, that’s what it is “for all intents and purposes.” He also stated he’s received “100% confirmation” that the game is a Nintendo Switch-focused title- though it won’t be exclusive to the Switch, Nintendo’s hybrid seems to be the lead platform during development. Given that Capcom are using a heavily modified version of the RE Engine for the upcoming Switch exclusive Monster Hunter Rise, that doesn’t seem too farfetched.

In subsequent messages, Dusk Golem said that the game is going to be a survival horror game in the style of Resident Evil 7 and the Resident Evil 2 remake, and that even though it might have action elements, it will still be horror focused.

Interestingly enough, the insider also claims that Resident Evil 0 protagonist Rebecca Chambers is going to star in the Switch title. She was allegedly going to be involved in the upcoming Resident Evil Village, though those plans seem to have changed.

As is always the case with leaks of such nature, it’s best to take this with a grain of salt for now, even though Dusk Golem does have a solid and proven track record as far as Resident Evil leaks are concerned. A Switch-focused RE title has been long overdue though, so this would definitely be a very welcome release, if it does happen. We’ll keep you updated should we learn anything more about it, so stay tuned.
