For this takeover to be possible, Star Wars: The Old Republic would have had to be successful enough to make $2 billion a year.

BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk has revealed that BioWare had higher hopes for MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic. In a recent episode of the My Perfect Console podcast (transcription courtesy of Time Extension), Zeschuk said that the potential success of The Old Republic could have led to him, along with BioWare’s other co-founder, Ray Muzyka, into making a bid to take over Electronic Arts from within the company.

However, the dream was a longshot, with Zeschuk saying that Star Wars: The Old Republic would have needed to make an incredible amount of money – around $2 billion a year – for the move to be possible. And ultimately, as history showed us, Star Wars: The Old Republic was, at best, modestly successful.

“I lived in Austin for two-and-a-half years making Star Wars the Old Republic [and] I knew that was kind of a one-way trip,” said Zeschuk. “If it was super successful, super duper successful, Ray and I would have probably launched a bid to try and take over EA from the inside, being the corporate pirates that we are. But it needed to be like $2 billion a year successful. But it didn’t work out so I was like, ‘Ah, I’m fine.'”

For some context, Star Wars: The Old Republic was, at the time, one of the most expensive video games being developed. The MMORPG was quite ambitious, and wanted to meld the multiplayer fun of other games in the genre with BioWare’s penchant for telling stories.

Zeschuk also spoke about how he realised his dislike for big companies after having worked with EA. He described working with the publisher as being given “enough rope to hang yourself,” citing the need to work within the massive company’s structure as being something you need to learn.

“EA gives you enough rope to hang yourself,” Zeschuk said. “And what I mean by that is you have to learn to work within the structure and I think we did quite well if you look at the Mass Effect’s came out there. It was actually a pretty successful run. But you have to understand how to work within a big company. And, for me, that was the end. It was like, ‘Oh, I don’t like big companies.’ So I knew by year two that I was going to leave at some point. I just didn’t know when.”

“Big companies exist to exploit properties,” he continued. “They exist to exploit games. Most of the big North American guys, they’re just good at ‘Hey, let’s just squeeze the most money out of this franchise.’ They don’t kind of create a lot of them, and I kind of realized early on that I like making games. I don’t like just operating.”

Zeschuk, along with co-founder Muzyka left BioWare back in 2012, shortly after the announcement of Dragon Age: Inquisition. More recently, BioWare released Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Check our review of the RPG for more details. Star Wars: The Old Republic, on the other hand, is still available to play as a free-to-play MMORPG on PC.

As recent reports revealed, BioWare confirms it's shifting all development of the MMORPG to its long-time development partners at Broadsword Online.

Reports earlier this month claimed that BioWare was preparing to move all work related to Star Wars: The Old Republic over to Broadsword Online, its development partner on the MMORPG, and that has now been officially confirmed.

In a recently published blog update, BioWare GM Gary McKay announced that development on future support and content for Star Wars: The Old Republic is being handed over in its entirety to Broadsword Online, though EA will remain as the game’s publisher.

“I’ve been working closely with Keith Kanneg, who leads the SWTOR team, to give the game and the team the best opportunity to grow and evolve,” McKay wrote. “And so, while EA will remain SWTOR’s publisher, development of the game will move to our partner and friends at Broadsword, a boutique studio with expertise in managing online games. Both the Broadsword studio and SWTOR team members will be joining forces and working tirelessly to support “every player, every day,” ensuring that these worlds and these communities continue to thrive and grow. Their Founder and President, Rob Denton, even has direct experience with SWTOR, having helped lead the team during the development and launch of the game during his time at EA.”

He added: “There are also exciting new features planned that the team is not quite ready to talk about yet, but suffice it to say that players can expect improvements and new content into the future. This is a company that will give SWTOR the room to grow and flourish, with the continued commitment and full support of Lucasfilm Games, and the continued partnership with EA.”

Keith Kanneg, executive producer on the MMORPG, wrote, “I know decisions that impact our people are the hardest part of change and evolution, but I believe Broadsword is the right studio to continue to enhance and modernize our game—and also expand the number of people who can play it.

“Of course, I’m also very glad that I’ll be moving over with key team leaders and continuing to work with most of our current team.”

BioWare itself, meanwhile, has said it’s going to be renewing its focus on crafting “immersive, emotionally charged, single player games.” The studio’s next game is going to be Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, which, according to McKay, the development team is continuing to “build, polish, and tune” to deliver the best experience possible. Beyond that, BioWare is also working on the next Mass Effect game, which is still in pre-production.

The MMORPG, which originally launched in 2011, will reportedly be taken over by Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot developer Broadsword Online.

Star Wars: The Old Republic has been around for well over two decades now, and though it did not get off to the best start upon its launch back in 2011, over the years, BioWare’s MMORPG has continued to improve and build a steady and sizeable player base. Now, however, it seems the studio is ready to fully move on from the project.

As per a report published by IGN, BioWare is looking to shift the entirety of its focus to single player development, and more specifically, its two upcoming projects- Dragon Age: Dreadwolf and the next mainline Mass Effect game. To that end, Star Wars: The Old Republic is set to go third party and be taken over by an external studio.

As per the report, EA is on the verge of agreeing a deal with Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot developer Broadsword Online. While EA will continue to publish the MMORPG, all future development and support will allegedly be handheld by Broadsword.

IGN’s report also states that of the 70-80 people currently part of the development team at BioWare that handles Star Wars: The Old Republic, more than half will move to Broadsword Online. Of the remaining employees, while some will be allowed to seek vacant roles elsewhere at EA, others will be facing layoffs.

For now, neither EA nor BioWare have provided an official statement on the situation.

As for BioWare’s upcoming titles, the studio confirmed in October last year that Dragon Age: Dreadwolf was continuing to make progress behind the scenes and was in a fully playable state. Leaks emerged not long afterward, offering a look at the game’s revamped action-focused combat system. However, EA recently confirmed that the RPG won’t be launching before April 2024 at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the next Mass Effect, which was officially confirmed to be in development back in 2020, has had little to no concrete updates from BioWare in the time since then, though the developer did share a brief and mysterious teaser late last year.

The MMORPG's next expansion has been pushed back to early next year, with the development team "focusing additional testing on the many areas [they] have changed throughout the game."

Star Wars: The Old Republic might not be seeing the kind of rapturous success that something like Final Fantasy 14 is enjoying, but BioWare’s MMORPG is still going strong, and has kept its player base busy with engaging content on a consistent basis. Earlier this year, BioWare announced Legacy of the Sith, an expansion that promises to bring new locations, story content, features, gameplay changes and improvements, and more- but players are going to have to wait a little longer to dive into its offerings.

Originally slater for Holiday 2021, BioWare has announced in a message written by project director Keith Kanneg that Legacy of the Sith has now been delayed to February 2022 (because that month wasn’t looking busy enough as it is). Kanneg explained that the development team will be utilizing the extra development time for “additional testing.”

“Legacy of the Sith is something the team has been hard at work on for quite a while but as we get ever closer to launch, it is clear that we need a bit more time,” Kanneg wrote. “We’re focusing additional testing on the many areas we have changed throughout the game to deliver the experience we want, and one that you deserve.”

Meanwhile, it’s also been confirmed that barring story content with spoilers, “the majority of the expansion and its features” will be returning to public test servers this week, with the developer hoping to gain more insight on what’s needed to shape the expansion based on feedback from players.

Star Wars: The Old Republic – Legacy of the Sith will launch on February 15, 2022.

The new expansion will introduce Combat Styles, multiple new locations, gameplay improvements, and more when it launches later this year.

BioWare’s MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic didn’t get off to the best start, but slowly yet surely, it’s recovered and improved significantly, and has enjoyed a strong and dedicated player base for quite a while. Soon, it’s going to be celebrating its tenth anniversary, and for that occasion, BioWare is releasing a major new expansion called Legacy of the Sith.

There will be several new locations, including the underwater facilities on the planet of Manaan with separate Imperial and Republic storylines, and a mysterious Sith record that was erased from all records on the planet of Elom, which will be playable solo as well as as a multiplayer Flashpoint. Meanwhile, completing the Manaan questline will also unlock a new daily area and a new base of operations for your faction.

Major gameplay additions are also inbound, such as Combat Styles, which will separate your Class from your gameplay style, thus allowing you to choose any Advanced Class within the Tech or Force playstyle. And yes, you can also secretly use Dark Side powers while posing as a member of the Jedi Order. The level cap is also being increased to 80.

There’s also a new R-4 Anomaly Operation, which players will “take down a galactic threat in deep space”, and a new Galactic Season that will entail new rewards, quality of life improvements, and more. Beyond Legacy of the Sith’s launch, BioWare is also has several other things planned, such as a new Flashpoint, a PvP system revamp, new locations, visual improvements, more story updates, UI improvements, and much more.

Legacy of the Sith launches in Holiday 2021 and will be available for all current subscribers of the game for no additional cost. It will also be hitting the public test server soon, so be on the lookout for that. You can get more details in the expansion’s announcement livestream below.

Right now everyone has their eyes on EA and Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: The Fallen Order. That’s the first major single player game in a very long time, and EA is hoping the game is going to perform extremely well. But in the background, through the years, another Star Wars title has been ongoing in Star Wars: The Old Republic. And apparently, it’s been successful.

The game is a MMORPG, a dying breed of game, that was loosely a follow up to the legendary Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It’s gone through several different reboots over the years, but it maintains a fairly solid userbase. That was evident when EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said the game has almost hit a revenue milestone of $1 billion during an earnings call.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is available and live now for PC. A new game based on the Stars Wars IP is also in the works, which you can read about through here.

BioWare has developed quite a few games in over 20 years- in this feature, we rank all of them.

Though the road has been rocky for BioWare over the last few years, due to missteps and troubles that have become well documented by now, there’s something that we must not forget- in their prime, BioWare were flat out amongst the best developers in the industry, masters of an entire genre of video games, and some of the most effective storytellers we’ve seen in this medium to date. Of the many, many games the studio has made to date, there’s a large number of them that can be classified as all-time greats.

In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at all the games that BioWare has ever made (barring a couple that were on mobile devices or made for web browsers), and ranking every single one of them, starting with the worst one, and counting down right to the very best.

Without further ado, let’s get started.

#17. SHATTERED STEEL

Though BioWare is a studio associated with RPGs and storytelling, the first game they ever made was something completely different. Shattered Steel was a mech action title, which took cues from the MechWarrior series, but went for a more accessible and action-oriented style of gameplay (which you can translate to “it had more mindless explosions).

Shattered Steel was a decent enough game, with enjoyable action and a story that, for its time, was at least mildly entertaining. It was, however, a far cry from the kind of games BioWare would build its reputation on and go on to be associated with, and is, as a result, often altogether forgotten.

Mass Effect and Dragon Age developer talks about what it would take to make a new Star Wars title.

Bioware is known most for Dragon Age and Mass Effect now, but another one of their beloved titles is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, a classic styled cRPG that they launched for PC and Xbox back in the early 2000s. Knights of the Old Republic is considered to be one of the greatest games ever made- and people have been waiting for a Bioware follow up ever since.

However, that has not happened – short of The Old Republic, a Star Wars MMORPG Bioware launched in 2011 – and we’re still waiting for a new one to come out. Speaking to Game Informer, Bioware’s Casey Hudson talked about the possibility of a new Star Wars game from the developer, noting that it would be a big undertaking, and implying that nothing of the sort is underway at the moment.

“There are so many games that […] we as a studio want to get to,” he said. “So, one challenge is, to make a really great game on this scale really, at this point, takes the majority of the studio the size of BioWare, and we’re a pretty big studio. There’s so many more games that we want to make than we can’t get to, so we kind of have to pick and choose and move through them. But, I’ve always loved Star Wars, I loved making Knights of the Old Republic. So…we’re always trying to figure out what’s next.”

I do hope that one day, Bioware sees it fit to return to Knights of the Old Republic… is what I’d usually say. But, on the other hand, I was disappointed with Inquisition, and everyone knows how badly Andromeda went for the company, so at this point, I don’t even know if Bioware could recreate that kind of greatness, even if they did try.

Bioware also contemplating ending development on Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Along with information on Bioware’s Anthem, the next big shared world experience from the studio behind the Mass Effect series, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier also learned more about the next Dragon Age. Sources speaking to Schreier noted that the highly anticipated sequel was meant to have “live” elements with a “heavy focus on characters and story.”

However, the report indicates that this is being reevaluated. Dragon Age: Inquisition has had multiplayer elements before but what “live” elements for the RPG could mean hasn’t been detailed. Given the controversy behind EA’s approach to games as a service over the past year, it should be interesting to see how things are handled here.

An official tweet from Dragon Age and executive producer Mark Darrah noted that both development teams were working hard. One thing that seems to be somewhat confirmed – that the next Dragon Age would be out after Anthem.

Kotaku’s report also stated that Bioware was discussing ending development on its MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. As of now, with a small team working on the game, plans are “up in the air” according to a source.

Halfway through my trip to Barcelona!
I’m here showing Anthem internally to EA. I am EP of BOTH DA and Anthem working with @Bio_Warner as Game Director
Anthem’s up next but there are people hard at work on both franchises and I look forward to sharing more in the future
