Do you have a friend, a relative, or someone else you always wanted to play games with on a couch, but can’t decide which one you should dive into? Worry not. Here are our 15 best recommendations for couch co-op gamers.

Once a principal staple of games some twenty plus years ago, the ability to play in local, couch co-op nowadays more often seems a sought-after feature than something to be expected. There’s an unrivalled joy in playing together in the same room as others; something which online multi-player cannot replicate. Couch co-op is still a thing though; whilst some developers add local co-op respectively via updates, some of the best available weave the requirement to work diligently together into the very fabric of the game’s design.

The platformer gets more content next year.

After Trine 3 was something of a disappointment, an experiment of sorts that went wrong you could say, Frozenbyte Games went back to the basics for Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince. The game was a success, we enjoyed it, and it seemed to get the franchise back on track by going back to its roots- and it’s not done just yet, as more story DLC is coming.

It was announced that a new DLC add-on would be coming to the game, entitled Melody of Mystery. It involves the cast going back to the Astral Academy to investigate why all the students have fallen into a mysterious enchanted sleep. It’ll have six new levels that will include new puzzles and abilities. Alongside the announcement came a brief teaser, which you can see below.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC. Melody of Mystery will release on all platforms in Spring of 2021.

Looks of creatures for this Halloween season on Now.

October is finally here and, as always, the focus is on that holiday that closes the month: Halloween. It’s generally the time to cart out all of your ghosts and ghouls and other assorted creatures associated with scary times. Seems PS Now will be no different in that regard as six new titles are available for the month with some that harken well to that time of the year.

As you can see below, it’s time for the monthly additions to Sony’s streaming service, PS Now. Probably the most notable one is last year’s Days Gone, an open world action game known for its literal hordes of zombies you have to contend with it. It will be available on Now for a limited time until January 4th 2021. There’s also Friday the 13th, the 4v1 multiplayer title that sees someone playing as the iconic killer Jason as four other players must try to escape or kill him. For something a little lighter, there’s the MediEvil remake, which sees undead knight Sir Daniel taking on all sorts of evil beasts. On top of that, we also have a few Halloween-esque indie titles, Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince, Steel Rats and Battle Princess Madeline.

All of these titles are available now via PS Now, which can be accessed on the PS4 and PC.

After a disappointing third entry and then a couple years of radio silence, Frozenbyte’s Trine series is back again, going back to its 2.5D sidescrolling roots with Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince. With the game out now, they recently released a launch trailer to give us a brief look at everything we can expect from the game.

The trailer, which you can view below, showcases the beautiful art and visuals of Trine 4, while the co-op aspects, combat, puzzles, and platforming are all also on full display. Suffice it to say, fans of the first two games in the series will find plenty to like and be excited about here. Check it out below.

In our review of the game, we awarded Trine 4 an 8/10, calling it “an excellent co-op game” and praising it for its beautiful music and visual design, co-op gameplay, and freeform puzzles. Read our full review through here.
Frozenbyte marketing manager Kai Tuovinen speaks with GamingBolt about Trine's return to form.

Back during the end of the previous decade when the indie gaming scene was just beginning to explode, one of the games that stood out to a great many people was a beautiful little sidescrolling platformer-slash-puzzle title called Trine. Developers Frozenbyte would go on to improve on that game with an equally as beautiful sequel, but with the third game, they decided to experiment a bit, dropping their 2.5D sidescrolling style for a full-on 3D experience. Trine 3 was a disappointment to many fans, but with Trine 4, the series is going back to its roots.

In light of that, it’s not a surprise that so many people are looking forward to the game, and the fact that it looks so good surely helps with that as well. We recently had the chance to send across a few of our questions about Trine 4 to Frozenbyte to pick their brains about this series’ return to its roots. You can read our full interview with marketing manager Kai Tuovinen below.

"The idea was to make the fights in Trine 4 a bit more tactical than before, so fights also take place in isolated events, where the room gets filled with additional nightmare platforms and barriers."

One of the things that Trine 4 is banking on quite a bit is the improvements it’s making to the combat- can you talk about what these improvements are?

There’s lots of new enemy types in Trine 4 that take up nightmarish forms. Enemies have different abilities that you have to be mindful of as they can complicate your encounters, for example some enemies conjure immunity to others and have to be dealt with first. The idea was to make the fights in Trine 4 a bit more tactical than before, so fights also take place in isolated events, where the room gets filled with additional nightmare platforms and barriers. These make the fights more vertical and implore you to use more of the Wizard and Thief, who both have ranged capabilities and additional combat-oriented skills. There are also many boss fights in Trine 4!

Beyond combat, what sort of improvements can players expect to see in traversal and, in turn, platforming?

Several of the abilities of the heroes, both old and new have their uses in platforming. For example, the thief’s trusted grappling hook can now be combined between two points to form a rope bridge, and her ice arrows that are making a comeback can now be used to freeze dynamic platforms. Amadeus has an iron ball that you can roll on and overcome obstacles such as spikes or poisonous mushrooms, and he also has a blink ability that allows him to teleport short distances. Pontius gets a charge, kite shield and can stomp heavy objects on see-saws and use the counterweight momentum to hurl himself and others high up in the air.

Many of the other new abilities are essential for puzzle solving but also come in handy in platforming situations.

Trine 4 is promising an impressive multiplayer experience, but for those who’re looking for a solo experience, there are some questions- for instance, is the game designed primarily around co-op play? Or are solo and co-op both equally viable ways of playing Trine 4?

Both solo and co-op are equally viable ways of playing Trine 4. One of the things that is really unique in Trine 4 is that we’ve designed a lot of the puzzles to have co-op variants, especially if you play the game in Unlimited Mode (where you can have any combo of the three characters, with up to four players). So essentially, you have different puzzle variations when playing solo and when you play in co-op, and that gives you a ton of replay value.

The single player experience is also one where you can take your time to really explore all the levels in peace, and enjoy the story elements with your full attention without being interrupted by others.

"Going back to the 2.5D style we had in Trine and Trine 2 was the way we felt we could make the best Trine game possible."

Can you talk about the progression mechanics in Trine 4, in terms of upgrades and skills and the like?

The skill trees have made a return in Trine 4 and there are tons of upgrades available for each character, some familiar from previous instalments in the series, and many new ones as well. We’ve made some changes to experience gathering and the upgrade system. Some skills you’ll get automatically by progressing in the game and defeating the monsters you’re facing, and these skills will be essential for the puzzles ahead.

The experience vials you see scattered in the levels are used for upgrades that are not necessary, but improve your characters especially in combat and help you with fun puzzle solution options.

What led to the decision to switch back to the style of the first two games?

Going back to the 2.5D style we had in Trine and Trine 2 was the way we felt we could make the best Trine game possible. It was what the fans had been asking us to do, and what we felt made the most sense for the defining skills of the characters and puzzle designs, and we knew it was the best way for us to create a full game with a great story! It was pretty clear that the sidescrolling style would be the way to move the series forward again.

Is this the direction you see the series being headed in from here on out, or do you think there’s still room for experimentation similar to what you did in Trine 4?

For now we’re focusing on Trine 4 fully and this is the direction we’re headed to. We haven’t had any talks about going back to any 3D experiments, as we learned some lessons from Trine 3. That said, it’s not good to become complacent for too long and we’re always exploring new things with our games, so we’ll see how it goes in the future.

About how long will an average playthrough of Trine 4 be?

Trine 4 is the longest Trine game we’ve ever made with 18 levels in total. It takes around maybe roughly 12h to play through once. Revisiting in Unlimited Mode co-op will easily get you many hours more with the changed puzzles, and the play-through estimates always depend a lot on previous experience and the play style of the players.

Do you have any plans to launch on Stadia?

We’re looking into it and other new platforms, but can’t confirm anything at this point.

"The resolution is dynamic on Xbox One X and is a lot higher than on Xbox One with 60fps, but doesn’t necessarily reach all the way up to 4k."

Will the game will feature Xbox One X specific enhancements? Is 4K/60fps on the cards?

The resolution is dynamic on Xbox One X and is a lot higher than on Xbox One with 60fps, but doesn’t necessarily reach all the way up to 4k. It looks very very good though!

And how will the PS4 Pro version turn out in terms of resolution and frame rate?

PS4 Pro is 1080p/60fps like the regular PS4, we did not have the chance to do any separate enhancements for launch, but we aim to support Trine 4 with future updates so we’ll take another look at PS4 Pro shortly after.

How is the game running on the original Xbox One and PS4, frame rate and resolution wise?

Both Xbox One and PS4 are 1080p/60fps, with dynamic resolution scaling, so some times it goes a bit below 1080p in very action-packed or highly detailed scenes, to keep the fps running at a smooth 60.

The PS5 is confirmed to have an SSD. From a development perspective, how will this help you to improve game performance in the future?

Speaking on a general level, game loading times is an area that will benefit from having an SSD. Depending on the type of game and the amount of data, the difference can be huge. For us it’s perhaps not as big of a change than some other games, we’ve managed to make the loading times in e.g. Trine 4 quite ok – but of course, nobody likes waiting, so every second saved is great!

The PS5 will have a Zen 2 CPU processor which is a major leap over the CPUs found in the PS4 and Xbox One. From a development perspective, how will this help you in developing games of the future?

Everybody likes a faster CPU as that helps with every aspect of game development and game performance. All basic features of a game are dependent on the CPU, so a better CPU means more resources available for things like general gameplay, AI, and pathfinding, etc.

"We at Frozenbyte have developed games for 15 years now so our library of games is getting quite big, so having some of them available for a new console straight out of the gate would be great."

Xbox Scarlett features GDDR6 memory. How will this increase in memory bandwidth help you in the future?

I imagine it will help performance in general but other than that this is too technical for me I’m afraid. Ask me again in a year and I’m sure I’ll be a lot wiser after having discussed this with our programmers and other people!

Backwards compatibility is a big feature PS5. How will it help your past library to evolve and grow?

Backwards compatibility is always great because it means there’s a ton of great games to play on a new console right from the start. It’s also very nice especially now with next-gen because many current generation games have specific enhancements made for the faster variants like PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, so new consoles will probably be able to use those enhancements too as-is.

We at Frozenbyte have developed games for 15 years now so our library of games is getting quite big, so having some of them available for a new console straight out of the gate would be great.

A perfect circle.

If I had to sum up Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince in a single word, I’d probably go with “charming.” Whether you’re drawn in by the colorful and varied environments, the wonderful soundtrack, the great puzzles, or just the sheer enjoyment of hanging out with these characters doesn’t much matter. Whatever your reason for booting up Trine 4 and spending time in its world, you’re likely to find a reason to want to return.

I’ve somehow managed to avoid playing Trine despite owning several on the games and the positive word of mouth that surrounds the series, but you don’t have to be familiar with the previous games to understand what’s going on. The titular Trine – Amadeus the wizard, Zoya the Thief, and Pontius the Knight – have all split off on their own adventures, but they’re quickly reunited when they’re sent after Prince Selius, an arrogant royal who accessed forbidden magic and submerged the kingdom in his nightmares. The gang’s task is simple: find Selius and bring him back to the Astral Academy, who can help put things right.

"Trine’s characters are what makes it unique. You can switch between them at will, and each has different abilities. "

You manage to find Selius pretty early on, but he refuses to come with you, so you end up tailing him as he runs around, hoping that this is the time the kid will see reason. Of course, he always figures out some way to escape, and you have to track him down again. It’s like when you’re playing a fighting game and all the characters are fighting because the game really needs to give you something to do. There’s no real reason for it other than the game needing to justify getting you to the next thing, and it doesn’t make a lot of sense in context, but you’re not particularly upset about it. What I’m saying is that Trine 4’s story isn’t particularly compelling. It’s just there to give you a reason to do what you’re doing, and that’s fine. Pontius, Zoya, and Amadeus manage to stand out despite that. They’re fun characters with defined personalities, and the sense of shared history here makes their conversations and interplay feel genuine.

The real core of Trine 4’s appeal is its gameplay, and that’s where it delivers. The game is a 2.5D platformer with a heavy emphasis on puzzle solving. Anyone who’s played an indie game in the last decade knows that this isn’t a new or unique recipe, but Trine’s characters are what makes it interesting. You can switch between them at will, and each has different abilities. Pontius is your heavy hitter. He can use his sword to break boxes and attack enemies. He can also reflect attacks, light, and projectiles with his shield, and his charge ability allows him to dash across gaps and propel objects into breakable walls. The downside is that he’s rather slow and doesn’t jump very high (the man likes his pie).

Zoya can attack from long range with her bow, but she can also use her arrows to freeze platforms in place to make puzzles easier. She also has a grappling hook, which can move objects, allow her to access distant grapple points, and make rope bridges between objects. Amadeus doesn’t have much in the way of offense, but he can summon blocks and move heavy objects, allowing him to access switches or puzzles other characters couldn’t read. He can also blink (teleport) short distances, making him your best bet for platforming sections.

"A typical puzzle might ask you to use Zoya’s grappling hook to open a door, use Amadeus’s magic to summon a block that can be used to trigger and out of range switch, and use Pontius’s shield to reflect beams of light between mirrors to open a door."

How these characters interact is what makes Trine 4 fun. A typical puzzle might ask you to use Zoya’s grappling hook to open a door, use Amadeus’s magic to summon a block that can be used to trigger and out of range switch, and use Pontius’s shield to reflect beams of light between mirrors to open a door. None of these puzzles are particular head-scratchers, but they are a lot of fun. Between puzzles, you’ll traverse levels collecting experience, which is scattered throughout the environment in the form of collectibles. Usually, getting them means completing small platforming challenges hidden between the major puzzles. Some are simple, only requiring you to reach a higher platform or make a trickier jump, but the best ones are hidden and come with their own major puzzles. Collect enough, and you can upgrade the character’s major abilities. One allows Zoya to immediately come out of her roll with a fully charged bow, while another allow Amadeus to lift enemies and hold them in midair. These upgrades aren’t necessary – you are more then capable of beating the game without them – but they make the game more fun, and give you a lot more options, especially in combat.

Unfortunately, combat happens to be the area where Trine 4 falters. None of the enemies outside of the bosses are doing anything particularly interesting, and it’s easy to just switch to Pontius for most fights and mash away because the game doesn’t require you to do anything else. Trine 4 occasionally livens things up with elemental enemies and hitting them with arrows of the opposite element from Zoya’s bow will wipe them out in a single shot, but you mostly fight the same enemies in the same areas, and battles feel pretty repetitive. Yes, you can mix things up a bit by using each character’s special abilities, but there’s often no reason to when Pontius can just stand next to enemies and spam attacks with his sword. Combat is easily one of the weakest aspects in Trine 4, which is a shame because the game does provide you with cool options. There’s just no reason to use them. Thankfully, combat encounters are rare, occurring only a few times a level, and then it’s back to platforming and puzzle solving. Trine 4 knows what you’re here for, and it wants to make sure you have a good time.

If combat is the game’s weakest point, the strong co-op support is its best. Trine 4 supports both local (hallelujah!) and online co-op, and there are multiple ways to play. Classic mode gives you one of each character at will and allows you to switch between them, while Unlimited mode gives player their own set of wizard, thief, and knight to play with, which means you can have several of the same character running around at any given point. Best of all, the game’s puzzles change depending on which mode you play. That meant that many of the puzzles I encountered while playing in Unlimited mode were meant to be solved with two wizards, or two thieves, which wouldn’t be the case in Classic mode or playing alone. The basis for each puzzle is the same, but even the most subtle of operations, like a new switch behind a locked door, mean that you’ll approach them completely differently. The game also doesn’t force you into a single solution, and my partner and I always felt like the solutions we can up with were just one of many possibilities. Your solution feels unique, and that encourages experimentation. It’s Trine 4’s best aspect, and one that is only enhanced by its co-op mode.

"Trine 4 understands that the best solutions and the ones you make yourself, and the best co-op modes are the ones that build themselves around the options having more players brings to the table."

Of course, the game isn’t perfect. The character models look fine at a distance, but up close you can see that they lack detail. I also ran into a bug that required me to exit and restart the game because a gate that was supposed to unlock when my partner and I solved a puzzle simply refused to. Still, the game’s production values are largely very impressive and I only ran into a single bug, which seems a small price to pay given the amount of freedom the game allows you.

Trine 4 may not boast the most compelling of stories, but it does everything else well. From beautiful music and visual design to free-form puzzles that allow you to solve them your own way and some of the most impressive co-op design I’ve seen in a while, Trine 4 nails the important stuff. It’s a game I want to go back to, especially with a friend, just to see what changes when we try something else or play another mode. Trine 4 understands that the best solutions are the ones you make yourself, and the best co-op modes are the ones that build themselves around the options having more players brings to the table. The yarn it tries to spin may not be the most memorable, but the best stories are the ones we make ourselves, and as fun as Amadeus, Zoya, and Pontius are, they’re just along for the ride.

Whether or not a game features enhancements for Xbox One X and PS4 Pro’s more powerful hardware is a question we ask quite often, for pretty much every major and semi-major release these days. If you’re wondering whether that will be the case with the upcoming Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince, we’ve got those answers for you.

We recently got the chance to ask developers Frozenbyte a few questions about their upcoming action platformer, who confirmed to us that the game will be enhanced on the Xbox One X. “The resolution is dynamic on Xbox One X and is a lot higher than on Xbox One with 60fps, but doesn’t necessarily reach all the way up to 4k,” marketing manager Kai Touvinen told GamingBolt, before assuring us that it “looks very, very good.”

That said, the PS4 Pro won’t feature similar enhancements. Though frame rate on it will still be 60 frames per second, the resolution will be capped at 1080p at launch- though the developers will “take another look” at PS4 Pro enhancements after the game’s launch.

“PS4 Pro is 1080p/60fps like the regular PS4, we did not have the chance to do any separate enhancements for launch, but we aim to support Trine 4 with future updates, so we’ll take another look at PS4 Pro shortly after [launch],” said Touvinen.

Finally, what about the base PS4 and Xbox One? Trine 4 runs at 1080p and 60 FPS on both of them. That said, it makes use of dynamic resolution scaling, which means the resolution can dip below 1080p at times.

“Both Xbox One and PS4 are 1080p/60fps, with dynamic resolution scaling, so some times it goes a bit below 1080p in very action-packed or highly detailed scenes, to keep the FPS running at a smooth 60,” Touvinen explained.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince is out on October 8 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Out full interview with Frozenbyte will be live soon, so stay tuned.

October is jam packed with some of the biggest games of the year.

We often speak of the Autumn deluge – a period where numerous high-profile titles release. It starts in September but really kicks off in October with the likes of Call of Duty, Ghost Recon and Destiny 2 vying for dominance. However, with so many titles across a range of genres, you’re bound to find something worth playing. Check out our picks for the games to play in October.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is more or less the biggest game of the month. Though more of a reboot than a straight sequel, we see the return of Captain Price. New characters like Farah, a rebel leader; CIA officer Alex; and police sergeant Kyle Garrick also figure in the story. With Spec Ops missions, larger multiplayer battles in Ground War, no “traditional” season pass and cross-platform multiplayer, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare looks to be yet another hit in the franchise when it releases on October 25th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Of course, time will tell how the post-launch support pans out.

GRID

Another reboot coming later this month is GRID from Codemasters. As a return to roots for the franchise, GRID will once again see players racing across different disciplines and events to quality for the GRID World Series (thankfully, you don’t have to win every single event to qualify). New additions include 400 AI drivers, each with their own driving styles which can lead to rivalries and the creation of Nemeses. You even face off against Fernando Alonso, two time Formula One World Champion, in Career Mode. GRID is out on October 11th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep

The next paradigm shift for Bungie’s shared world shooter franchise, Destiny 2: Shadowkeep returns to the Moon for battles against the Hive and an army of Nightmares. While it seems the Darkness is closer than ever, Shadowkeep will keep players occupied with a number of other changes. Armor 2.0 will lets you choose your own perks on gear; Seasonal Ranks provide a tiered battle pass-like system for earning cosmetics and other rewards; and a new raid will be going live on October 5th. Destiny 2: Shadowkeep is out on October 1st for Xbox One, PS4 and PC along with its free-to-play version Destiny 2: New Light.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint

The follow-up to Wildlands, Ghost Recon Breakpoint sees Nomad and the Ghosts investigating the Auroa archipelago after drone manufacturer SkellTech goes dark. When their helicopters are shot down, it’s Nomad versus the Wolves led by Cole Walker, a former Ghost. Part looter shooter, part tactical stealth, part shared world live service title…Ubisoft is stacking a number of hats on Ghost Recon Breakpoint. Hopefully, it all coalesces into a polished open world experience when it launches on October 4th worldwide for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

The Outer Worlds

Obsidian Entertainment is finally back in the FPS/RPG driver’s seat with The Outer Worlds. You awaken as a passenger on a colony ship with most of your brethren in hibernation. Megacorporations have colonized the Halcyon Cluster and it’s up to you to investigate what they’re really after. You’re essentially a blank slate who can interact with different factions, meet and fight alongside companions, arm yourself with a variety of weapons and decide what direction the story goes in. Those hungry for a new Fallout title that fulfills these promises, complete with Obsidian’s signature writing, should check out The Outer Worlds – it arrives on October 25th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville follows EA’s new strategy of sudden releases which started with Apex Legends. However, it’s actually available in paid early access with new content added each week. For those who don’t buy it, October 18th marks the day of the game’s launch. Either way, if you’ve played Garden Warfare, then Battle for Neighborville offers more of the same. Choose from 20 classes, six being brand new, and partake in Team Deathmatch or fulfill objectives in Turf War. Perhaps the coolest new addition is the ability for several players of the same class to combine together, Voltron-style. Hopefully that and other weirdness will carry the game past its first month of launch.

WWE 2K20

So it’s a new WWE 2K title. If you’ve played one of the virtual fake fighting titles, you’ve played them all, right? Except WWE 2K20 isn’t co-developed by Yuke’s – instead, Visual Concepts is fully in charge this time. How this will affect the overall gameplay remains to be seen but there’s a new Showcase mode revolving around the Four Horsewomen, a female MyCareer story and the return of 2K Towers. Hurray? WWE 2K20 arrives on October 22nd for PC, Xbox One and PS4.

Luigi’s Mansion 3

Nintendo has been on fire lately, releasing at least one high profile exclusive on the Switch each month. August had Astral Chain, September had Link’s Awakening and October has Luigi’s Mansion 3. Basically, Luigi, Mario, Peach and a bunch of Toads travel to the Last Resort hotel for a vacation. Unfortunately, King Boo traps Mario and the others, which means Luigi has to suit up for the rescue. Using the new Poltergust G-00, which allows for slamming ghosts and creating Gooigi to traverse through impassable objects, Luigi’s Mansion 3 looks to be an excellent action-adventure and worthy follow-up to the series. It’s out, conveniently enough, on October 31st.

MediEvil

The PS4 may not have a ton of high-profile games out this year but it does have an eagerly anticipated remaster this month with MediEvil. Developed by Other Ocean Emeryville and releasing on October 25th, MediEvil once again puts players in the skeletal frame of Sir Dan as he seeks to save the kingdom from his nemesis Zarok. With completely revamped visuals and 4K resolution support on PS4 Pro, MediEvil looks to be another blast from the past that’s worth getting into.

Concrete Genie

The other PS4 exclusive releasing this month is Concrete Genie. Developed by PixelOpus, it focuses on Ash, a young artist in the downtrodden town of Denska. After bullies rip out the pages of his sketchbook, Ash embarks on a journey to retrieve them. He also finds a way to bring his creations to life, breathing new life into Denska. Avoiding the bullies and restoring any artwork they may ruin is also a key component of the story. Releasing on October 8th, Concrete Genie isn’t a long game but should more than make up for that with its emotional impact and aesthetics.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince

After the ill-fated Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power and a bunch of other new IPs, Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince returns to the 2.5D platform puzzler format of legend. Terrible monsters are manifesting from Prince Selius’s nightmares so it’s up to our heroes – Amadeus the Wizard, Zoya the Thief and Pontius the Knight – to save the day. Explore ruins and tombs and play solo or in co-op with up to four players, combining different talents and skills to surpass obstacles. With a new combat system and challenges, Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince could resurrect the series. It’s out on October 8th for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition

No, you haven’t entered a time loop. CD Projekt RED is indeed releasing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition on October 15th but it’s for the Nintendo Switch. That means all of the base game’s content and updates along with Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine is included. It may not boast the sharpest resolution or visuals but as one of the best open world RPGs ever made, it’s a darn fine adventure to have on the go.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 3

Nihon Falcom’s The Legend of Heroes series is one of the more underrated RPGs out there, offering compelling stories to go with its excellent turn-based gameplay. There’s good news Trails of Cold Steel fans – Trails of Cold Steel 3 is out on October 22nd for PS4. Localized by NISA, it sees Rean Schwarzer as a military professor eventually caught up in a conspiracy that could threaten the entire country. Concerns for the localization aside, every JRPG fan should look into the sequel and prep for the inevitable release of part four in the West.

Frozenbyte’s upcoming Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince is promising a return to form for the platforming/puzzle series after the disappointing experiment that was Trine 3, and in all that we’ve seen of the game so far, it’s looked exactly like the kind of game fans of the series would have been hoping it would be. Now, publishers Modus Games have put out a new trailer of the game, nearly 10 minutes long, giving an overview of all that’s new and improved, and showing off a ton of gameplay footage.

The trailer goes over the co-operative Unlimited Mode and all the changes that are being made to combat, while also discussing the basics of what constitutes the traditional gameplay loop in a Trine game. That footage being shown off looks sharp, while the visuals and the art style are also looking particularly impressive. Take a look below.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince is out on October 8 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. If you’ve never played any of the other Trine games, or just want to binge on every single one of them, Trine: Ultimate Collection – a compilation of all four Trine titles – also releases on those platforms on the same day.

Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince promises a return to the 2.5D platforming of the first two games following the disappointing Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power. Boasting the most complete experience in the series yet, Trine 4 features a revamped combat system, new skills, and much more. And of course, it wouldn’t be Trine without online and local co-op multiplayer.
