Whether through misguided updates, poor balancing, or baffling design shifts, these develoeprs made bold moves, in the wrong direction

Building a game can be an extremely tough job. There are a lot of moving parts involved in crafting a game, and for many reasons, developers sometimes make decisions that leave the final product feeling worse than its predecessor. It could be design decisions that don’t align with other aspects of a game, artistic directions that don’t gel with the fanbase, or maybe even development issues or mandates that make it seem like the pitch was, ‘Hey, let’s make it worse!’. With this feature, we will be taking a look at 15 such examples of games gone wrong.

Overwatch 2

The original Overwatch was a runaway success that garnered a sizeable player base and many awards, and many fans were understandably excited about the sequel. Overwatch 2’s announcement sparked excitement with promises of expanded PvE and a broader scope, but what we got in reality was a shooter that lost focus of what made it so special in the first place. The magic of Overwatch’s PvE was gone, and the expanded PvP options felt shallow and generic.

The remaster now also allows players to swap between its multiple visual styles, which includes a new remastered style that retains the original game's look while enhancing the resolution.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call Warcraft 3: Reforged one of the most disastrous releases in Blizzard Entertainment history. Upon its launch back in 2020, the remaster was widely panned for having butchered one of the greatest PC games of all time, and the broken state it launched in also led to Blizzard Entertainment issuing refunds in large numbers. It seems, however, that the developer is taking another swing at fixing Reforged (or parts of it, at least).

Celebrating Warcraft’s 30th anniversary, Blizzard has not only shadow-dropped remasters of Warcraft 1 and 2, it has also released an Update 2.0 for Wacraft 3: Reforged. Most notable among its additions is the ability to freely swap between multiple visual styles- the original game’s look, Reforged’s remastered look, as well as an entirely new style that retains the original’s look, only with enhanced resolution and image quality.

Meanwhile, the update also brings with it a revamped UI, as well as a number of graphical improvements, such as overhauled lighting and improved environments. The original game’s assets have also been uprezzed to HD.

In our review of Warcraft 3: Reforged upon its launch in 2020, we gave it a score of 5/10, saying, “Except for its solid core gameplay and intriguing story, Warcraft 3: Reforged lacks any major updates over the original. In the end, what we have is a game that is a complete disappointment.” Read the full review through here.

How exactly did the remaster of one of the most beloved strategy games of all time end up fumbling so spectacularly?

Until not too long ago, Blizzard Entertainment still had all the prestige that the developer had typically been associated with over the years. When Blizzard put out a new game, the entire industry would pause and take notice, and almost as a rule, these new games would shatter expectations and be met with rapturous critical and commercial reception. Recent years, however, have brought a few blemishes to Blizzard’s pristine record- and probably the biggest blemish of the lot is Warcraft 3: Reforged.

Warcraft 3 is, of course, a special game- widely regarded as one of the greatest strategy games ever made, it holds a special place in the hearts of millions and is often seen as a landmark PC title. You’d think that a remaster of a project with that kind of legacy would warrant proper care and attention from Blizzard, but things, of course, turned out very differently. Rather than going all out with the remaster and delivering a truly definitive version of an all-time classic, Blizzard Entertainment made one wrong decision after another – enforced by directives from Activision, which we’ll get to in a bit – and that led to, quite simply, a disastrous game.

Warcraft 3: Reforged launched in January 2020, and it was instantly clear upon its release that the game was something of an unmitigated disaster. Reviews were surprisingly negative by and large, with criticism being focused on a number of factors, including the poor technical state the game had launched in, it’s cumbersome UI, the fact that many features that Blizzard had promised before launch were missing (like updated cutscenes and re-recorded voice overs), and the fact that even some key features from the original game were missing (like clans and the ladder system).

It was a failure on all fronts, and it didn’t help at all that Blizzard made some other questionable decisions related to the game as well that only served to frustrate the community more. Most significantly, Warcraft 3: Reforged’s client completely replaced the original game, rendering it inaccessible, which meant that not only was Reforged a bad remaster, it somehow managed to actively make the original game – an unabashed masterpiece in its own right – worse.

Of course, it wasn’t just the reviews that slammed the game. Warcraft 3: Reforged was widely critcized by players as well. User scores aren’t necessarily perfectly reflective of a game’s quality all the time, but they are often reflective of how a game’s community is feeling about that particular product- and Warcraft 3: Reforged’s user reviews painted an ugly picture. In fact, for a few good months until Madden NFL 21’s launch in August 2020, Reforged had the lowest user-score for any game on Metacritic, while its Metacritic user score was also the lowest ever for a Blizzard game until Diablo Immortal came along earlier this year (which was another big mess- but that’s a different story entirely).

Not long after Warcraft 3: Reforged’s launch, Blizzard started accepting refund requests from players with a no-questions-asked policy, and within a few months of the remaster’s release, its development team was disbanded. So again, the words “unmitigated disaster” seem like a pretty apt description for the whole situation. And really, even a cursory glance at the details of the game’s messy development will tell you that its rapid post-launch failure was not much of a surprise- even to Blizzard, really.

In July of 2021, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier published a detailed report that shed light on the troubled development of Warcraft 3: Reforged, which, more than anything else, made it clear that right from the get go, the game was fighting an uphill battle- and as I mentioned earlier, directives passed down to Blizzard by Activision were almost singularly responsible for that. More and more over the years, Activision has become hyper focused on maximizing profits. Now don’t get me wrong, all companies are focused on maximizing profits, that’s the sole purpose of their existence- but Activision does it unlike no one else, to the extent that it’s very become become one, large Call of Duty machine at this point. Blizzard, of course, doesn’t touch Call of Duty, but it, too, now focuses primarily on the projects that’ll bring in the big bucks- and Warcraft 3: Reforged, a remaster of a PC-only strategy game, was deemed to not fit that mould.

As Schreier described in his report, Activision didn’t think Warcraft 3: Reforged was going to be a big title for the company, which meant that the budget that was set aside for it was a fraction of what its development team needed to fulfil its vision, and crucially, to make good on the promises it had made to fans upon the game’s announcement. Warcraft 3: Reforged had a small development team that was struggling with the scope of the project, and apparently had management and production issues of its own. That, combined with the smaller budget afforded to the team by Activision meant that the game’s development was a mess, leading to the poor technical state it released in, and all the features it was missing.

Another damning detail that Schreier revealed in his report, interestingly enough, was that the reason Activision was so willing to move forward with Warcraft 3: Reforged’s launch in spite of how much work it still very clearly needed was the fact that a lot of pre-orders had already been placed for the game. Rather than having to refund those pre-orders in the event that the project was delayed or cancelled, Activision and Blizzard decided to push the game out, knowing full well that it was not even close to being ready and that it would be slaughtered upon release.

Blizzard promised key changes and improvements to Warcraft 3: Reforged not long after it came out, but those improvements haven’t arrived. The game is still missing features and still has more than its fair share of issues, and once again, fan-made mods have had to carry the weight in Blizzard’s absence here. It’s worth mentioning that the game has now been handed over to a new team within Blizzard, and recently got its first new update in quite some time, which, significantly enough, finally added Ranked Play to the remaster, in addition to a number of other tweaks. Whether or not Blizzard will be able to keep up a healthy cadence of updates and actually bring the game up to a decent level of quality remains to be seen.

Blizzard has, of course, seemingly learned more than a few lessons from the botched release and development of Warcraft 3: Reforged. It was careful not to repeat a lot of the same mistakes with Diablo 2: Resurrected, a game that very much seemed to be a statement meant to reassure fans that the company can still properly handle remasters of beloved classics. Sure enough, the results were drastically better, and that’s certainly restored some confidence.

Blizzard is a company with many major issues right now, with many that go far beyond a single failed game- fixing all of that is going to be a long-term process, but hopefully the company will continue to look at its past mistakes and keep making sure that it doesn’t make them again.

The triple-A games industry is a place of great expectations. Here are 10 super-hyped titles that either stumbled or crashed after launch.

What happens when a super-hyped game, especially one that’s good at launch, faces immense backlash? What happens when fear of disappointment turns to anger and eventually hate? Let’s take a look at 10 such games here.

Star Wars Battlefront 2

DICE’s first Star Wars Battlefront wasn’t awful but it was a far cry from what made the original games so endearing. Even on its own, the amount of content and features just felt lackluster. So when Star Wars Battlefront 2 was announced, it seemed like Electronic Arts was ticking all of the boxes. More extensive maps and modes. A single-player campaign. Free post-launch updates. It all seemed like a dream come true for Star Wars fans.

Then Star Cards happened.

Star Cards were equipable items that provided significant boosts to one’s combat abilities. And of course, the best way to get them was through RNG loot boxes. It was like the pay-to-win pot had finally boiled over, that too in a franchise that was popular among kids. The fact that it cost so much to unlock Star Wars heroes and villains for use in multiplayer – leading to the infamous “pride and accomplishment” comment from EA on Reddit – didn’t help things either.

To say the backlash was immense would be an understatement. Star Cards were pulled from purchase and moved to Class Level unlocks; microtransactions were now limited to cosmetics; more multiplayer content, both online and offline was introduced; and numerous fixes were deployed. It was quite the turnaround for the maligned title. By the time support began winding down in 2020, fans began a petition for more DLC, even willing to pay for the same. That didn’t happen but at least Battlefront 2’s life cycle ended on a happy note.

We'll be hearing from the remaster's development team in June, according to a new tweet by Blizzard president Mike Ybarra.

Despite a few updates, the launch of Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft 3: Reforged was an unmitigated disaster. While the development team said they were working towards a roadmap in May 2020, said roadmap never came. A report in January 2021 about the team’s dissolution didn’t help matters.

Nevertheless, it seems that Blizzard has something to showcase for the remaster. On Twitter, president Mike Ybarra was asked about any news from the Warcraft 3: Reforged team. He responded, “You’ll hear from them soon (in June).”

Perhaps a reveal at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase? It could be added to Game Pass (and the Microsoft Store by extension) with various fan-requested changes and features. Heck, the original Warcraft 3 may be returning with custom games restored to their former glory. We’ll have to wait and see.

The Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase takes place on June 12th. While Microsoft hasn’t confirmed which games will be appearing, Bethesda’s Starfield should be present given director Todd Howard’s assurance last November. Stay tuned in the meantime.

What's the opposite of doing justice to a classic? This is.

There’s a reason people so often get nervous about the idea of a remake or a remaster of one of their favourite games- because for all the examples of excellent remakes and remasters over the years, there have been just as many examples of those that have completely messed things up in the worst way possible, tarnishing the legacy of a beloved game. Here, we’re going to talk about a few such examples.

SILENT HILL HD COLLECTION

Never has there been a more infuriating example of a remaster that completely misses the point of what makes the original game so good. Silent Hill has always been all about the atmosphere, and the visual changes made in the HD Collection did everything in their power to completely destroy that, from the almost complete removal of something as crucial to the experience as the mist to the baffling lack of improvements made to character models, objects, and environments.

The team was originally supposed to begin working on a remake of Diablo 2 before being dismantled.

A report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has shed light on internal restructuring going on at Blizzard Entertainment. Among those changes, a major one has reportedly seen Blizzard Team 1 – who developed last year’s Warcraft 3: Reforged – being dismantled late last year. Team 1 was also responsible for StarCraft 2, Heroes of the Storm, and StarCraft Remastered.

As per the report, following the launch and widespread criticism of Warcraft 3: Reforged, Team 1 began preparations for work on its next project, a remake of Diablo 2. Before work on that began, however, the team set about to discuss what had gone wrong with Warcraft 3: Reforged’s development.

According to internal Blizzard documents seen by Bloomberg, the remake’s development was plagued by miscommunication, mismanagement, and a rushed launch due to financial pressures. The game was announced in November 2018, at which point Blizzard began accepting pre-orders for a 2019 launch, and this was done without the knowledge of most of the development team.

While Blizzard Team 1 was focused on ensuring that similar mistakes weren’t repeated, Blizzard eventually pulled the Diablo 2 remake project and handed it to the team working on Diablo 4 (who are reportedly curretly overseeing the remake, with Vicarious Visions, who were recently merged into Blizzard as a support studio, working on the game).

In October 2020, Blizzard dissolved Team 1, dismantling the division entirely. Many Team 1 employees were given the chance to interview for positions elsewhere at Blizzard, but several developers were let go. Quite a few Team 1 staff chose to join indie teams like DreamHaven – a newly set up game development company led by former CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, Mike Morhaime – or Frost Giant, another developer set up by former Blizzard veterans.

A Blizzard spokesperson said to Bloomberg when asked about Warcraft 3: Reforged’s planned updates and fixes: “We are still committed to updates in support of the community.” It remains to be seen who will be in charge of the remake’s post-launch plans.

From middling to downright mortifying, these games failed to meet expectations.

2020 is half-way over and has offered up a litany of disappointments. It’s interesting to consider how many games seemed like surefire things before launch and yet, ended up either underwhelming, disappointing or outright infuriating. Without further ado, let’s look at the 15 most disappointing games of 2020 so far.

Warcraft 3: Reforged

How do you possibly mess up a classic game like Warcraft 3? It’s one thing to have multitudes of bugs, horrible multiplayer, an underwhelming UI, and an uneven graphics update. It’s quite another to claim ownership over all custom games with players not even getting credit. Or outright lying about remastered cutscenes and presentation. Or making it so that owners of the original had to update to Reforged, thus ruining their nostalgia as well. Or a dozen other things that make you wonder how Blizzard got to this point.

Here are all the buildings for each race, along with two simple build orders for Orc players.

Warcraft 3: Reforged gets a lot of attention for its heroes and battles but buildings are still the life blood of your army. You’ll need resources like Food, Lumber and Gold to build them, and each race has their own unique buildings. When all your buildings are destroyed, the game is over so you need to defend them effectively. We’ll also look into basic build orders for the Orcs to provide something easy and effective to start with.

Each race starts with the Town Hall along with four to five Peons or workers. You’ll go through Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 buildings while setting up. The first focuses on an Altar, food production, towers, units and so on. Tier 2 will provide new buildings for specializing units into two different schools while Tier 3 will net you a fairly strong unit.

First, let’s take a look at the Human buildings. Keep in mind that some buildings are required before you can start constructing Castles and Keeps. Resource costs and build time for the buildings are as follows:

Scout Tower – 30 Gold and 20 Lumber. Requires 25 seconds to build.

Farm – 80 Gold and 20 Lumber. Requires 35 seconds to build.

Guard Tower – 100 Gold and 70 Lumber. Requires 50 seconds to build.

Lumber Mill – 120 Gold. Requires one minute to build.

Altar of Kings – 180 Gold and 50 Lumber. Requires one minute to build.

Keep – 705 Gold and 415 Lumber. Requires two minutes and 20 seconds to build.

Town Hall – 385 Gold and 205 Lumber. Requires three minutes to build.

Arcane Tower – 100 Gold and 70 Lumber. Requires 50 seconds to build

Next, let’s look at the Orc buildings and the amount of resources and time they require to build.

Orc Burrow – 160 Gold and 40 Lumber. Requires 50 seconds to build.

Altar of Storms – 180 Gold and 50 Lumber. Requires one minute to build.

Voodoo Lounge – 130 Gold and 30 Lumber. Requires one minute to build

Watch Tower – 110 Gold and 80 Lumber. Requires one minute to build.

Spirit Lodge – 150 Gold and 135 Lumber. Requires one minute and 10 seconds to build.

Stronghold – 700 Gold and 375 Lumber. Requires two minutes and 20 seconds to build.

Now let’s look at the Undead’s buildings.

Nerubian Tower – 250 Gold and 70 Lumber. Requires 30 seconds to build.

Spirit Tower – 295 Gold and 90 Lumber. Requires 35 seconds to build.

Black Citadel – 870 Gold and 440 Lumber. Requires two minutes and 20 seconds to build.

Finally, let’s take a look at the Night Elf’s buildings, which are unique in that they can be moved to different locations (but might lose some functions in the process).

Moon Well – 180 Gold and 40 Lumber. Requires 50 seconds to build.

Ancient Protector – 135 Gold and 80 Lumber. Requires 55 seconds to build.

Recommended Build Orders for Orcs

Working out a build order is crucial since they can determine whether you overwhelm a foe in the early game or prep for the late game. Let’s take a look at some different build orders for Orcs to give you a basic idea for how to start.

The first build order is fairly standard and involves getting a Grunt, Raider and Spirit Walker up by mid-game. Build an Altar of Storms first, followed by an Orc Burrow. Train a peon and send them to mine Gold while two other peons harvest Lumber. Build more Peons and send one to build a Barracks while another mines more Gold.

Create a Blademaster after the Altar is finished and then another Orc Burrow. The Blademaster is fairly potent, inflicting massive damage with Bladestorm and being able to confound enemies with Mirror Image. Critical Strike also provides 15 percent more chance to deal more damage on attacking.

Create a Grunt after the Barracks is complete and then a shop. Have another Peon focus on gathering Lumber. When you’re almost at 200 Wood, it’s possible to send your Blademaster and other units out to mess with your foes. Set up two more Orc Burrows to raise the food cap and then create a War Mill, which should speed up the wood gathering process significantly.

Next up is the Bestiary and Tauren Totem, after which you can bring a Shadow Hunter into the mix. Hunt creeps with the Shadow Hunter while your Blademaster continues to harass the other races. Your Bestiary should be done by this point. Create two Raiders, one with Ensnare and another with a Kodo Beast (which can deal some serious single-target damage).

You can also create two Spirit Walkers once the Tauren Totem is complete. Make sure they have Adept Training to allow for removing debuffs in an area (though this removes buffs as well). Continue upgrades to pick up an Orb of Lightning for the Blademaster or simply attack another race’s base.

The second build order involves a Tauren Chieftain, Troll Headhunters and Bloodlust. While slow to start with, the damage of the Headhunters and Chieftain make up for it later.

First, get a handful of Peons to mine Gold. You’ll want to keep producing Peons who will construct all the required buildings quickly. Start with an Orc Burrow, then Altar of Storms, War Mill and Barracks. Put Peons onto Lumber gathering and recruit the Tauren Chieftain once the Altar is complete.

Construct another Burrow and make sure to stop Peon production when close to 20 supplies. Upon completing a Barracks, start building lots and lots of Headhunters. Set up a shop and get some healing items for your Chieftain. Commence creeping until your Chieftain is level 3 and has War Stomp and Endurance Aura.

Ranged weapons should be upgraded at the War Mill. Pick up the upgrades for Headhunter soon after (use Berserk to increase their damage in fights). Pick up the Shaman and upgrade him as well. Next up you can recruit a Shadow Hunter, if you so desire. Otherwise, the Tauren Chieftain can be used as a frontliner to hit multiple units with War Stomp. Ensure he’s upgraded significantly by the time you’re ready to battle.
