The remastered version of Warcraft 3, Reforged, is available now on PC. The game has had some mixed reception from fans, drawing criticism for various aspects, from the new look, to the balance, to… well, just about everything. Some people aren’t too impressed with the long awaited re-release. And one big change is sure to make some in the modding community less than happy with how Blizzard will handle ownership of custom games.
Much like the original, Reforged will allow players access to the world editor and let players create their own custom games to share with the community. But it seems like this go around, Blizzard are making sure they keep that custom content locked down. Unlike the original, the Custom Game Acceptable Use Policy (which you can read in full through here) clearly states that any work created will be owned exclusively by Blizzard.
That means that anything built by the community will remain the property of Blizzard. Situations like DOTA and League of Legends (both started out as mods for Warcraft 3 that were bought by major companies and reworked into full-fledged games) can’t happen this go around. So, if you plan on playing around with Warcraft 3: Reforged‘s custom games, just keep in mind that anything and everything you create is the sole property of Blizzard.
