UK Software Charts: Xbox Dominates 2013 Sales, Nintendo Plummets

Sony sees a sharp rise in software sales compared to 2012.

Though the PlayStation 4 saw an excellent launch in Europe near 2013 end, it was actually Microsoft’s consoles that collectively sold the most software in 2013 according to Gfk Chart-Track.

New data reveals that the Xbox One and Xbox 360 managed to sell 14.4 million units of software in 2013 for sales of £458 million. Interestingly, the total sales actually dropped by 6.5 percent compared to the previous year. By contrast, Sony’s sales were up by 15.2 percent for a total of £372 million with software on the PS Vita, PSP, PS2, PS3 and PS4 selling 11.4 million units in total.

Meanwhile, Nintendo struggled to remain relevant, selling only 6 million software units on the 3DS, DS, Wii and Wii U as compared to 9.3 million units in 2012. This meant a sales drop of 35.5 percent and sales of £142 million total. This is most likely due to the poor success of the Wii U, where even big name titles like Super Mario 3D World failed to make an impact in the UK.
