Cyberpunk 2077 Sold More in 2022 Than in 2021

The action RPG saw an increase in sales in 2022, likely thanks to its current-gen launch and the popularity of the Edgerunners anime.

Cyberpunk 2077 had a disastrous launch, and from a critical perspective, the game was lambasted from all corners of the industry for quite some time for that very reason, but where its commercial performance is concerned, there’s little doubt that the game has been a massive success for CD Projekt RED. So much so, in fact, that it’s actually gathering momentum with its sales, and sold more in 2022 than it did in 2021.

That was confirmed by CD Projekt in its recent fiscal report, where it demonstrated the long-term sales performance of Cyberpunk 2077. Doubtless buoyed by the popularity of Netflix’s anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunnersas well as the game’s native launch on current-gen platforms, the action RPG managed to outperform its own numbers last year as compared to the preceding year- though of course, 2020 remains its best-performing year yet.

Meanwhile, The Witcher 3 also continued to post strong numbers, several years on from its launch.

In September last year, it was announced that Cyberpunk 2077 had sold over 20 million copies. Every day for four weeks in row around that same time, the game saw over a million daily players on Steam, and even managed to overtake The Witcher 3’s all-time concurrent user count on the platform.

2023 is also likely to be a strong year for the game, with CD Projekt RED working on its expansion, Phantom Liberty, which is confirmed to have bigger budget than any other expansion the developer has previously worked on. More details on Phantom Liberty will begin rolling out in June.
