Marvel’s Avengers has added three playable superheroes since its launch with Kate Bishop, Hawkeye, and, most recently, Black Panther, and of course, there’s more to come from Crystal Dynamics from now until the end of the year as well. One of the biggest upcoming new additions is Spider-Man as a playable character, but with him being exclusive to PlayStation, does that mean his introduction to the game won’t have a proper story? They are calling it a “hero event” rather than a new expansion, after all.
It seems like that won’t be the case, thankfully. While it obviously won’t be an actual expansion, senior producer Dan Matlack recently gave assurances to players in the game’s official Discord (via MP1st) that the Spider-Man content will have cutscenes and a story. He said: “Spider-Man is what we call an ‘event’, so he will have cutscenes and a story for sure.”
Of course, with Crystal Dynamics having to work with the restrictions of the character’s PlayStation exclusivity, it’s hard to see how they will manage to integrate him into the game so that he feels like an organic part of the story and the world, rather than something that’s been bolted on to the experience. Who knows, maybe they’ll find a way to pull it off- but all the pessimism is definitely warranted.
Spider-Man will be added to Marvel’s Avengers this Fall, so we’ll find out soon enough how well he’s brought into the fold.
