Marvel’s Avengers – Square Enix President Hopes Game Will Surpass Spider-Man

Yosuke Matsuda wants the Avengers to go beyond.

Marvel is probably the biggest film brand on the planet at this point in time. Not many franchises can say they’ve had the level of critical and commercial success in films on an international level that it has had since coming under the ownership of Disney. But success in one field doesn’t always translate to success in another. The case in point is video games, as Marvel hasn’t seen much success in that medium until Spider-Man this year. Well, Square Enix hopes to change that in a big way with their upcoming Marvel’s Avengers, and they want to surpass the Friendly Neighborhood superhero every way they can.

In an interview with GamesIndustry, Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda said Avengers is going to have high goals, and seeing the success of Spider-Man (which became the fast selling superhero game in the US and saw great critical reception) makes it even more of a priority to be successful.

Spider-Man was a huge title and a major success, so we would like to work hard to have that kind of success,” Matsuda told GamesIndustry. “So I guess it did increase my expectations [for Avengers].

“I do believe you have to have high goals. I thought that Spider-Man was fantastic, but we don’t want to be bested by them. We are working very hard on the development effort right now, so that we are able to provide a new experience.”

Marvel’s Avengers will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia May 15th, 2020.
