Marvel’s Avengers Wants To Keep Players Engaged, Says Developer

"If you want to play more, we want to give you more stuff to do," says studio head Scot Amos.

Though it promises to have a central focus on a narrative-driven campaign that you can play solo in its entirety, Marvel’s Avengers is adopting a live service model for post-launch content. And with live service games, continued player engagement is the name of the game. How successfully games manage to deliver on that promise varies from case to case, but at the end of the day, it all boils down to three core factors- how good its post-launch content is, how meaty it is, and how frequently it releases.

Marvel’s Avengers might be launching with a campaign that will last just 10-12 hours if you want nothing but the main story, but it looks like developers Crystal Dynamics want to deliver on all three of those fronts as far as post-launch content is concerned. Speaking with GameSpot, Crystal Dynamics studio head Scot Amos said the developers’ main aim is to make sure that players never run out of content or feel bored while playing Avengers.

“We don’t want people to ever get bored or to run out of stuff to do,” he said. “We’ve learned from a lot of very, very good products out there of what does or doesn’t work, and how quickly these amazing players who are particular fanatics can consume content. So how do we do this in a way that’s smart, and keeps them engaged, and rewards them for their time? That’s actually the biggest thing for us. If you want to play more, we want to give you more stuff to do.”

Their plan is to keep adding stories, locations, and new playable heroes with the game’s post-release DLC – all of which is supposed to be free – and in theory, that sounds excellent. Now to see how well they’re able to execute that vision.

Marvel’s Avengers is out on May 15, 2020 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. The game will not feature local co-op play. We recently also got look at Ms Marvel, who will be the sixth main playable character in the game.
