There hasn’t been an Assassin’s Creed game on a Nintendo system since Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag all the way back in 2013 (though if you want to be technical, a streaming version of Odyssey came to Switch in Japan only last year). So how did it go for the series’ return to a Nintendo system? Digital Foundry took a look at the Switch version to find out.

Visually, the game is closer to a port than a remaster. It obviously lacks 4K and HDR support, but the game also resembles the character models of the original release more so than the other versions. In a bit of a weird twist, the game actually runs better in handheld mode than docked, though there’s still some framerate issues in both modes. The main issue they find is the Switch version has poor audio compression, most likely to make sure they could fit both games – Assassin’s Creed 3 and Liberation – on the same cart. They say overall the port is solid even with its issues, but still stop short of recommending it. Check out the full, in-depth video below.

Assassins Creed 3 Remastered is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. Those who own the season pass for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey can get it free of charge.

Ubisoft’s remastered version of the polarizing Assassin’s Creed 3 is available now, but it might be coming up just a little short of what was promised. As detailed by VG Tech in a new video, which you can view below, it seems the remaster does not actually output in native 4K as advertised.

According to their analysis, the game only runs at 1500p on the PS4 Pro. It fairs better on the Xbox One X with 1800p, but still short of the goal of true 4K. The second game included in the package, Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation, a former Vita spin-off that takes place aside the main game’s story, however, does manage to run at native 4K on both systems. All versions of the game run at 30 FPS, with the base PS4 and Xbox One versions running at 1080p and 900p respectively.

Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered is now available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. A Switch version is slated for May 21^st. If you bought the season pass of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the remaster is included free of charge.

Over the weekend, as fans of Assassin’s Creed 3 dug fully into the remaster, the base version of the game was delisted from Steam and Uplay. The original game’s Steam page simply stated, “Notice: At the request of the publisher, Assassin’s Creed 3 is no longer available for sale on Steam.” On Uplay, searching for it will only bring up listings for Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered.

If you already own Assassin’s Creed 3 for either platform, it will still be in your library. Ubisoft has removed the game for future purchase however, which isn’t a new trend in gaming. Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition was removed from Steam after Dark Souls Remastered released, for instance.

As for whether Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered is worth looking into, it has a couple of new features, like a better minimap, increased stealth opportunities, and free-aim for archery. The standalone version is also available for Xbox One and PS4, with the Switch version out in May. If you own the Season Pass for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, then you’ll get Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered and Assassin’s Creed Liberation Remastered for free.

Assassin’s Creed has reinvented itself in the last few years, thanks to the action-RPG reimagining of the franchise with Assassin’s Creed Origins and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, but there are still those who prefer the old style of play the series used to provide. For them, there is Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered, which takes the controversial third numbered instalment in the franchise and updates it for modern consoles.

Controversial because of its inconsistent storytelling, and bevy of systems and mechanics that never quite came together; nonetheless, there was a lot of potential in Assassin’s Creed 3, which follows the story of the American Revolutionary War, and maybe the changes and updates Ubisoft made to it will bring it up to speed.

With the game being available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC today (a Switch release will follow in May), Ubisoft has put out a new trailer for the title, which shows some of the most iconic scenes in the game. Even after all these years, it’s enough to get you hyped, honestly.

Assassin’s Creed 3 is one of the more controversial games in the series, owing to a general lack of polish, and a plethora of systems that were never fleshed out and never came together. However, it seems like the release of the upcoming remaster will see Ubisoft make some necessary improvements to the game to make it less… crappy.

These changes include some basic ones in consideration of the fact that the game is now seven years old, including changes made to the UI as well as the minimap, and the addition of a color-blind mode for accessibility. Stealth has been rebalanced, and you even get new tools and abilities at your disposal, such as being able to call on up to four assassins to help you, and dual kills.

The game will also have some Switch-specific features—menus will support touch input, the UI scales differently based on whether you are playing the game in handheld mode, or docked, and will also support HD rumble and motion controls.

Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered will launch on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on March 29, and on Nintendo Switch on May 21.

While unexpected and long-requested first party exclusives may have dominated the headlines in yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, it had a few third party announcements in store as well. The previously rumoured Nintendo Switch version of Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered was confirmed, with a short teaser showing the game in action- take a look below.

The visual quality of the game doesn’t seem nearly as good as it does on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC– which is to be expected, given the Switch’s hardware limitations. Assassin’s Creed 3 was always a very good looking game however, so you can’t really go wrong even with the Switch version. The package will also include Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation, which originally launched for the PS Vita back in 2012.

The Switch version of the remaster won’t be launching simultaneously with the other versions, though, and will be arriving roughly two months later, on May 21. This also technically isn’t the first time Assassin’s Creed is appearing on Nintendo’s system. Though it was a streaming-exclusive title, and was only available in Japan, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey appeared on the Switch last year as well.

Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered was confirmed for a March release recently by Ubisoft, but when they announced the release date, they only mentioned the PS4, Xbox One, and PC as its launch platforms. The Switch was noticeably missing- sure, new instalments like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey not releasing on the Switch makes some sense, given hardware limitations, but as a remaster of a six year old game (and the fact that Ubisoft’s support for the Switch has been pretty good), it seemed like a pretty major omission.

There have been rumours circulating that a Switch announcement for the remaster is imminent either way, and now, as per the game’s page on Ubisoft’s own site, that might just be true. On the page for Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered, the Nintendo Switch is also mentioned as one of the platforms it will be releasing on. You need to be logged into your Ubisoft account to view the game’s page, or you can just take a look at the screenshot below. Given that that’s on Ubisoft’s own website, it’s hard to discard that as a less-than-credible source. So why wasn’t the Switch version announced alongside all the other ones? Well, with a Nintendo Direct most likely just a couple days away, it’s likely that that announcement’s being saved for the occasion.

The first, most apparent change is the lighting. Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered is running on a new graphics engine, which employs physics-based lighting, backed by higher resolution textures, and native 4K resolution scaling. Of course, Ubisoft is also improving the gameplay mechanics and “ergonomics”. We’ll have to wait and see how that pans out, especially considering some of the criticism the third entry received back when it originally launched.

Along with the base game, players will also receive all of the DLC. The Battle Hardened Pack, Hidden Secrets Pack and alternate history story expansion The Tyranny of King Washington. Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation Remastered, a separate game focused on the Assassin Aveline de Grandpré, is also included with the overall package.

Assassin’s Creed 3 may not be the most popular game in Ubisoft’s action adventure (now RPG) series, but there’s no denying that when it launched, it was a stunning technical achievement (as, to be fair, most Assassin’s Creed games tend to be). And for all its faults, when Ubisoft announced that Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered would be part of Odyssey’s Season Pass, a great many people were elated at the chance to play the game yet again.

Now, Ubisoft have revealed the improvements we can expect to see in the remastered version of the game, the most notable of which have to be the visual upgrades to an already visually impressive title. On the Xbox One X and the PS4 Pro (and PC, of course, if your rig can support it), Assassin’s Creed 3 Remastered will feature 4K visuals, as well as HDR support. Whether these 4K visuals will be native or something else on both the enhanced systems isn’t something Ubisoft mentioned, though.

On a base PS4 and Xbox One, the game will run at 1080p resolutions. Across all systems, though, there will be several other upgrades to speak of. These include a new physically based rendering lighting system, higher resolution textures, and new character models, while crowds, environments, and VFX will also be made denser.

On top of that, Ubisoft has also mentioned that “based on player’s feedback”, many gameplay mechanics will also be “revamped or tweaked”. This is particularly interesting- to what degree can we expect them to revamp stuff? Considering this is a remaster, and not a remake, probably not too much, but it’s interesting nonetheless. No further details were given by Ubisoft on this particular point.
