Premium currency Mythril is no longer for sale on the Nintendo eShop, and the in-game store will disappear on January 6th (JST).

It’s been a rough year for Square Enix’s live service games, with Babylon’s Fall and Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier servers shutting down next year. Chocobo GP, the Nintendo Switch racing game with Final Fantasy characters that launched this past March, isn’t seeing its servers shut down. However, the publisher announced that there would be no more large-scale updates after Season 5, which starts today.

This means no new characters or maps in the future. Season 5 is also the last time Prize Pass levels (essentially Battle Pass tiers) will be used. Rankings will remain, functioning like the off-season, and Mythril, the game’s premium currency, has been removed from sale on the Nintendo eShop.

Those who still have Mythril can spend it until the shop disappears on January 6th, 2023 (JST). All Mythril will also become invalid at the same time. The shop will still have items for Mythril during Season 5, but once it’s gone, you may see them added to the Ticket or Gil Shops, so you won’t have to spend Mythril. If you missed items from Seasons 1 to 4, this might be an opportunity to acquire them.

Chocobo GP will remain playable but could die a slow death without any new content. Time will tell, so stay tuned for more updates in the future.

Each season will last roughly two seasons and come with its own Prize Pass. Final Fantasy 7 protagonist Cloud Strife will be part of Season 1's Prize Pass.

Square Enix has a number of major games releasing next month, and while Chocobo GP isn’t as prominent of a release on paper as something like Triangle Strategy or Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, there’s still plenty of excitement surrounding the kart racer’s launch. And with its release fast approaching, Square Enix has announced that pre-orders for the game are now live.

Meanwhile, the publisher has also revealed new details on the game’s post-launch seasonal model, what it will entail, and what will be included in Season One. Each season will last roughly two months, and participating in the 64-player bracket-style tournament, Chocobo GP Mode, will allow you to raise your season score and season level- which, in turn, will yield “special rewards”.

Additionally, there will also be a battle pass- because of course there will be. Called the Prize Pass, there will be a new one for players to purchase each season, and will give “access to additional rewards and the ability to earn resources, such as Gil, more efficiently”. Gil, in turn, can be spent at the Gil Shop to “purchase various rewards.”

Interestingly, Season One’s Prize Pass is effectively going to be free, with some caveats- anyone who logs into the game for a limited time (the end date for which hasn’t yet been announced) will receive 800 mythril in the game, which can is the price of a Prize Pass. This will apply to those who purchase Chocobo GP as well as those who play the free-to-play version Chocobo GP Lite, though Square Enix says the Mythril Shop in the latter will have “some restrictions”.

FInally, Square Enix has also confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 protagonist Cloud Strife will be available exclusive via Season One’s Prize Pass for players to unlock. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy 8 protagonist Squall Leonheart can be purchased from the Gil Shop.

Chocobo GP and Chocobo GP Lite will launch exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on March 10.

Though game director Akihiko Maeda hasn't specified whether these will all be in the game at launch, or if some will arrive via DLC.

Chocobo GP may not have been the most high profile new game to be announced at the recent Nintendo Direct, but it sure caught the eye of many people. A proper, full-fledged new kart racer feature Final Fantasy characters sounds like a solid idea on paper, so it makes sense that people are intrigued by it.

But of course, the question on many’s mind is- which characters will we feature? We saw glimpses of a few recognizable faces in the game’s launch trailer, and according to game director Akihiko Maeda in a recent TGS panel (via Siliconera), the roster’s quite healthy. Maeda explained that in total, the game will have at least 20 different playable characters from across the series.

Interestingly enough, even upon being asked the question, Maeda did not clarify whether all of these would be available at launch or if some would be added following release as DLC. Speaking of which, when asked specifically about DLC, he remained cagey and did not provide an answer.

Chocobo GP is due out exclusively for the Switch some time in 2022.

Square Enix's upcoming racer features the likes of Chocobo, Vivi and Moogle racing across numerous tracks. It's out in 2022 for Nintendo Switch.

Tokyo Game Show 2021 has kicked off (in digital format, of course) and new gameplay is being released for a variety of titles. Though Square Enix’s showcase takes place tomorrow, various outlets in Japan went hands-on with Chocobo GP, the racing title full of Final Fantasy characters. Check out gameplay below courtesy of 4Gamer, Famitsu and V-Jump to see various tracks in action.

Chocobo GP is a kart racer much like Nintendo’s Mario Kart series and sees players racing against the AI or friends, using power ups to gain the advantage. Items, in this case, are spells like Fira and there’s a wide variety to deploy. Along with Chocobo, various other characters like Vivi, Moogle and more are also playable.

Releasing in 2022, Chocobo GP will be available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. A release date may be announced in Square Enix Presents: Tokyo Game Show 2021, which streams tomorrow at 3 AM PST, but we’ll see even more of the title on October 3rd. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.

Other games confirmed for the event include Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier, Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars, and more.

Tokyo Game Show is kicking off in a couple of days, and several major publishers are confirmed to be attending with some big updates on upcoming games. One of those publishers is Square Enix, and their updated TGS 2021 schedule gives us a good idea from what to expect of their streams throughout the course of the three days of the event.

The two biggest games confirmed for TGS 2021 by Square Enix are the PS5-exclusive duo Forspoken and Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, with the former being scheduled for October 1, and the latter for October 2. Newly announced games such as Switch exclusive Chocobo GP and the Yoko Taro-led Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars will also be shown off on October 3. Meanwhile, you can also expect to see more of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy on October 2, and the mobile battle royale shooter Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier on October 3. You can check out the full schedule here.

As expected, Final Fantasy 16 isn’t mentioned anywhere in the schedule, while it doesn’t look like Triangle Strategy is going to show up either, contrary to what an earlier schedule claimed. We did just got an update on it at the last Nintendo Direct though, so at least we won’t be starved for information.

A new Final Fantasy-themed kart racer was announced as coming exclusively next year to Nintendo's system, with the chocobo at the center.

Today was a new Nintendo Direct, and has sometimes happens, there was lots of nice surprises. Some of them leaked ahead of time, but one of the games that pretty much no one saw coming was a new Final Fantasy-themed kart racer that is a callback to an old subset of the series that some may not even be aware existed. That game is Chocobo GP.

The game came alongside an announcement trailer, which you can see below. It’s a kart racer styled after the likes of Mario Kart and Sonic Team Racing, only with the Final Fantasy mascot, the beloved Chocobo front and center. Much like those other examples, you race other players and use special power ups to gain an advantage as well as spells taken from the franchise like Fira. It’s not just the feathered friends you’ll get to play, either, as it will include other original characters and those from classic titles such as Vivi from Final Fantasy 9. The game seems to be something of a modern interpretation of Chocobo Racing, a similar kart racer released in 1999 for the PS1.

Chocobo GP is set to release sometime in 2022 exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
