Whether we expected it or not, these bosses posed the toughest challenges this year.

As the year closes out, it’s worth looking back on all of the video game bosses that made our lives miserable (the fun ones, at least). Just when you thought this year had enough challenges, several more bosses have stepped up to stake their claim. Let’s take a look at 15 of the toughest boss fights of 2020. As usual, spoilers are inbound.

Omega Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection

The quest to face Omega Zero requires some work since you need to beat Mega Man ZX on Normal or Hard, and then navigate to Area M. After some platforming, you’ll battle what’s essentially a super-tough version of Zero. He’ll unleash all kinds of powerful attacks, including an extensive multi-hit combo that can chunk down half of your HP in a hurry. If that weren’t enough, he even deploys a barrier that negates any attacks and heals him, prolonging the fight further (as if having three health bars wasn’t bad enough already).

New guns and items, Arsenal Mode, a new boss and much more to shoot through.

Devolver Digital’s Exit the Gungeon is now available for Xbox One and PS4 but there’s cause for all fans to celebrate. The new “Hello to Arms” update is also live, bringing the new Arsenal Mode, additional shops in the hub and a terrifying new boss to hunt. Check out the release trailer below.

Arsenal Mode addresses complaints of not having any control over one’s weapon selection. Along with toggling the weapons that drop from loot and are available to purchase in shops, players can hold and switch between all of their carried weapons at any time. While they may have limited ammo, there will be ammo pickups available throughout.

As for the shops, you’ll come across Bello’s Shop twice on a single floor and also offers different doors for encounters or other NPCs. Whether the new mini-games are included in the latter or not remains to be seen but either way, you’ll gain more than enough guns to manage. Oh, and of course, you can pet the dog. Exit the Gungeon is also available for Switch, PC and Apple Arcade – stay tuned for more details on subsequent updates.

It will coincide with the launch of the "Hello to Arms" update on all platforms.

Devolver Digital’s Enter the Gungeon spin-off Exit the Gungeon is set to debut for PS4 and Xbox One on November 13th. Alongside these platform releases, the bullet hell platformer will also receive the “Hello to Arms” update. The free update will be live on Apple Arcade, PC and Switch along with the new platforms.

The Hello to Arms update adds new guns and items, new shops in the hub and the “Glocktopus.” There’s also the new Arsenal Mode which allows players to hold as many guns as they’d like. Currently, the gameplay revolves around randomly shifting between guns, which saw players complaining about the lack of control over their set-ups.

Despite its ties to Enter the Gungeon, Exit the Gungeon was actually developed by Singlecore Games. Dodge Roll Games is currently working on its next project which is a “more ambitious idea than Gungeon.” It’s expected to have a more robust foundation while retaining the same “humor, challenge, reactive combat, detail, and quality” that fans expect from the company. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months (hopefully).

From middling to downright mortifying, these games failed to meet expectations.

2020 is half-way over and has offered up a litany of disappointments. It’s interesting to consider how many games seemed like surefire things before launch and yet, ended up either underwhelming, disappointing or outright infuriating. Without further ado, let’s look at the 15 most disappointing games of 2020 so far.

Warcraft 3: Reforged

How do you possibly mess up a classic game like Warcraft 3? It’s one thing to have multitudes of bugs, horrible multiplayer, an underwhelming UI, and an uneven graphics update. It’s quite another to claim ownership over all custom games with players not even getting credit. Or outright lying about remastered cutscenes and presentation. Or making it so that owners of the original had to update to Reforged, thus ruining their nostalgia as well. Or a dozen other things that make you wonder how Blizzard got to this point.

During the Nintendo Indie World Showcase, Dodge Roll Games suddenly announced that Exit the Gungeon, its spinoff to the critically acclaimed Enter the Gungeon, is out now for Switch. Even better is the fact that PC players can finally get their hands on it as well. Check out the trailer below to see it in action.

The release coincides with update 2.0 which is also available for Apple Arcade players. This brings new weapons, new enemies like the Flying Fungun and Minecart Shotgun Kin, and Jammed enemies. Room variety and size has been improved and the various elevators have also been updated.

Unlike its predecessor, players don’t get to swap out and choose different weapons during a run, instead receiving a constantly changing gun depending on one’s performance. In terms of balance changes, the combo system will now provide more money and improved weapons at a faster rat. New hats, mini-games, quests and much more have also been added to the experience.

Enter the Gungeon has also passed three million copies sold.

Dodge Roll Games’ Exit the Gungeon, a side-scrolling platforming title set in the Gungeon-verse, is currently only playable on Apple Arcade. However, the developer has confirmed that it will be coming to consoles and PC early this year. Will that be in this quarter? Within the next month? It’s hard to say.

The developer also revealed that roguelite shooter Enter the Gungeon has passed three million copies sold. The title has received tons of critical acclaim since launch and a number of free content expansions. A Farewell to Arms was the last major content update, bringing new guns, synergies, two new Gungeoneers and much more to the experience.

While Dodge Roll Games has since moved on from Enter the Gungeon, it has a new title in the works that promise to be a “more ambitious idea.” It was reported to be in the early stages of development back in November 2018 but perhaps we’ll hear more of it in the coming months. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.

Experience a number of titles, ad-free, at just $4.99 per month.

The ambitious Apple Arcade is now available for $4.99 per month with more than 100 games planned for release this Fall. The launch line-up is already pretty hefty and all titles are available ad-free. If you want to try before signing up, the service offers a free one month trial.

Currently live for iPhones with iOS 13, the service will also be coming to iPad, Mac and Apple TV. It supports family sharing for up to six users with the ability to continue where you left off on another device. Both online and offline play are supported.

The line-up of available titles include Capcom’s Shinsekai: Into the Depths, Simogo’s Sayonara Wild Hearts, Dodge Roll’s Exit the Gungeon, Klei Entertainment’s Hot Lava, Frogger in Toy Town, the first part of Shantae and the Seven Sirens and many more. As far as subscription services go, it’s quite the offer and Apple is pouring a hefty amount into supporting it. Stay tuned for more details on new titles as they roll out.

The Enter the Gungeon spin-off features climbing, bullet hell mechanics and dodge rolling.

Apple recently announced a release date and price for Apple Arcade along with a bevy of games (including Capcom’s Shinsekai: Into the Depths, which sadly isn’t Deep Down). However, during the announcement, a new game in the Gungeonverse was spotted. Exit the Gungeon is a spin-off of Dodge Roll’s Enter the Gungeon and is co-developed by Singlecore Games. Check out the trailer below.

Unlike its predecessor, which is a dungeon crawler, Exit the Gungeon is more of a side-scroller. Bullet mechanics and dodge rolling are still a thing though. With the Gungeon collapsing, it’s up to you to escape, choosing the classic Gungeoneers, using a transforming weapon and meeting some familiar faces.

Overall, the enemies, bosses and mechanics will look very familiar to Enter the Gungeon fans. Adjusting to the side-scrolling perspective may take some time though. Exit the Gungeon is “coming soon” to Apple Arcade. Other platforms have yet to be confirmed but stay tuned for more details.
