Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water skims the surface as a remaster but holds up well as a great horror game.

Long-time Fatal Frame fans have been clamoring for any movement with the franchise for several years now, as the series has spent a long time being about as dead as the many tortured ghosts you come across in the games. Well, we finally have that twitch of life that fans have been waiting on, and while a remaster of one of the franchise’s least regarded games isn’t the glorious revival that many of us would have preferred, it does make sense for a few reasons and it still does a great job of bringing together the core elements of the Fatal Frame games, and thus, reminding us all why we love them so much. It also serves as a very digestible entry point for newcomers as it is the most modern-looking and playing game in series after all.

The story of the fifth mainline Fatal Frame is mostly centered around its three main playable characters; Miu Hinasaki, Yuri Kozukata, and Ren Hojo. But mostly centered around Yuri for the central narrative. Yuri has an otherworldly gift that allows her to bridge the gap between the realm of the living and the dead in a few different ways, so she finds herself involved with matters concerning the spirits of the dead. Maiden of Black Water starts as she is recruited to help find a missing person among the woods and shrines of Mt. Hikami; an area that’s well-known for paranormal activity and a popular choice for the suicidal. While the plot of this entry isn’t quite as unnerving or as interesting as the first few games, nor is it drenched in quite as much intriguing enigma that the series is still well-known for today, it still serves its purpose well as an excuse to explore the densely haunted grounds of its setting and do battle with countless ghosts.

Maiden of Black Water stands alone in the series narratively, but it is connected to the lore of the series in several ways, so it successfully and wisely threads that needle of being approachable for newcomers yet rewarding for returning fans – despite still not being quite as well-told as the older games. Similarly, the hazy, shadowy, washed-out atmosphere of the original games isn’t as pronounced in this entry, but it is still present albeit to a lesser degree. At the end of the day, it still looks and feels like a Fatal Frame game, and for newcomers as well as old time fans who might not have happened to own a Wii U, there is plenty of reason to give this entry a fair shot.

"Maiden of Black Water does a great job of bringing together the core elements of the Fatal Frame games, and thus, reminding us all why we love them so much. It also serves as a very digestible entry point for newcomers as it is the most modern-looking and playing game in series after all."

The aforementioned ghost battling is of course done with the Camera Obscura, and what this entry of the series might be lacking in story and atmosphere, it more than makes up for with perhaps the series’ best iteration of its battle system. Taking pictures of ghosts as they hobble toward you is as hair-raising as it’s ever been, as waiting for your film to reload while they close in on you provides a very palpable tension. Getting as many points of interest in each shot is also crucial here as it can do more damage that way. Also, different types of film can deal varying degrees of damage and take different lengths of time to reload – so there is a bit of true strategy there as different ghost types or amounts of ghosts can call for different film and different techniques. Regardless of how you approach it, every shot counts, and if you screw one up you’ll likely pay for it dearly.

Overall, I still find this unique combat system to be a great mix of fun, challenging and genuinely horrifying – and that’s something I can’t really say about most horror games with combat. The combat is also deepened a bit more by needing to manage how wet your character is. With the general theme of this entry being water, it makes sense thematically that being damp will cause more ghosts to appear as you explore, but it will also result in you doing more damage to them. So, if you’re feeling risky, you can entice more ghosts to come your way and rack up more points, or you can play more conservatively by regularly drying yourself off with embers and keeping combat encounters to a minimum. Sure, Maiden’s combat system might be held back a bit by some mild clunkiness and a borderline useless dodge function, but despite the game showing its age here and there, it’s still a system that’s a thrill to use from beginning to end.

The Camera Obscura isn’t just for taking out spirits though. It can also reveal items that are locked in the spirit realm if you take a picture of certain spots with the correct angle. Tilting the controller to the correct degree to achieve the right shot is a neat way to illustrate that, and the game uses this brilliantly to reveal hidden keys, notes, and other items of varying interest. You can also use controller tilting during combat, but I found that the gyro controls work better as a way to fine-tune rather than make large sweeping motions. You also get several opportunities in each chapter to sneak a quick shot of various apparitions for extra points before they disappear, so once you get good with it you’ll likely be nailing most of those and spending all those extra points in between levels on much-needed status items.

"Overall, I still find this unique combat system to be a great mix of fun, challenging and genuinely horrifying – and that’s something I can’t really say about most horror games with combat."

When you’re not battling evil spirits, you’ll be searching around for keys, reading notes, engaging with other characters, etc. It’s pretty standard survival horror stuff, but with this entry almost constantly going out of its way to point you in the right direction and keeping obtuse puzzles to a reasonable minimum, you’ll rarely feel stumped or lost – which might not sit well with old-school horror purists, but I feel like it works for this game. I’d even go so far as to say that its more forgiving structure is one of the few improvements this game has over the original trilogy.

Some twitchy movements, occasional camera issues, and muddy textures will likely prevent anyone from thinking this is a current gen game – even for a moment – but this is where that Fatal Frame visual tone comes in and saves the day for the most part. Texture work on much of the environment seems largely unchanged and muddy, especially compared to the characters themselves, but those environmental textures are also usually diffused and shrouded by fog, shadows, and a general lack of contrast so they don’t stick out like they would in other games from the same era. The rock-solid 60 frames per second and high resolution is usually a worthy trade-off for outdated graphics, but here, with most of the game’s worst textures being obscured by its atmosphere, it’s like getting to have your graphical cake and eat it too. Especially on current gen consoles.

Fatal Frame games, much like the original Silent Hill games, are generally light on music and instead seem to favor unsettling droning soundscapes to accompany the majority of the experience – and it still holds up perfectly well here. The exasperated cries of ghosts as they writhe in agony as well as the voice acting of the characters also suit the game just as well as they ever have. Sounds within the combat system also perfectly help signify the different phases of combat, so it’s nice to see all of that in-tact and working just as well as ever for this remaster.

Maiden of Black Water is not the best game in the Fatal Frame series. It’s probably not even in the top 3, but what many might have forgotten is that it’s still a solid entry in a series that really doesn’t really have any bad mainline games. While the uniquely eerie tone and mysterious storytelling of the original Fatal Frames is certainly watered down in this one, it still comes together as a worthwhile horror game that deserves to stand among its forbearers. Some mild clunkiness here and there is, sometimes, a bit too reminiscent of the era from which it came, and there’s no denying that this is one of the weaker stories in the series. That said, the extra strategy and depth afforded to its combat, the efficient manner in which the gameplay unfolds, and solid up-scaling of the originals’ visuals do add some extra points to it as a remaster and as an admirable entry of an iconic survival horror series.

Series director Makoto Shibata speaks with GamingBolt about the upcoming remaster.

Koei Tecmo’s horror series Fatal Frame has been around for a while now, and though it hasn’t always been the most high profile franchise of the genre, it has gathered quite a sizeable and dedicated audience over the years. After what’s been a rather long hiatus, the series is coming back with a re-release of the last instalment- 2014’s Wii U title, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. Of course, with Fatal Frame’s 20th anniversary right around the corner, it’s only appropriate that the series is coming back at least in some capacity, and to learn more about what we can expect from Maiden of Black Water’s re-release, we recently reached out to its development team. Below, you can read our conversation with series director Makoto Shibata.

"We wanted as many people to be able to play the game as possible. From fans that have played the series over the last 20 years on various platforms, to people who have just learned about the series."

What was behind the decision to bring back Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water?

As it’s the 20th anniversary of the Project Zero series, we wanted to express our thanks to our fans so we decided to bring the latest title, Maiden of Black Water, to the current platforms.

Why did you decide to launch the remaster as a multiplatform game this time? What was the dialogue with Nintendo like during that process?

We wanted as many people to be able to play the game as possible. From fans that have played the series over the last 20 years on various platforms, to people who have just learned about the series.

On the Wii U, Maiden of Black Water included Nintendo-focused cosmetics. Will these be exclusive to the Switch version in the remaster?

They will not be included in the Switch version.

Maiden of Black Water’s remaster is the first game in the series to have a photo mode. Given the central premise of a Fatal Frame game, it makes sense for there to be a photo mode at all, but are you taking the opportunity to do some different things with it that will fit the game’s premise?

In addition to the screen effects settings that are included in other games, you can adjust the depth of field, focal length and aperture. If you acquire the Psychic Lens, ghosts from past entries in the series can appear in the screen depending on the location or time.

"We are ensuring that the resolution and framerate will be suitable to each platform. Also, some of the effects, background textures and other aspects have been adjusted to look even better."

How much new content does the Maiden of Black Water remaster add?

We have added costumes that will showcase more of the characters’ personalities, as well as the Photo Mode we mentioned previously, which will allow you to take ghost photography with a high level of customization.

We have also expanded the ghost collection list, which now includes non-hostile floating ghosts and Traces.

What are the biggest visual and technical improvements being made to the game with this remaster?

We are ensuring that the resolution and framerate will be suitable to each platform. Also, some of the effects, background textures and other aspects have been adjusted to look even better.

Depending on how this game performs, do you think we will ever get a new Fatal Frame game?

As this title was prepared for the 20th anniversary of the series, we do not have any plans at the moment. However, the reactions we have received from everyone have exceed our expectations, so I’d like to consider this moving forward.

The PS5 features an incredibly fast SSD with 5.5GB/s raw bandwidth. How can developers take advantage of this, and how does this compare to the Xbox Series X’s 2.4GB/s raw bandwidth?

For this title, we are not focusing on comparing the different platform’s hardware, but are instead working to recreate the best aspects of the original version. Of course, the game loads more quickly now, so I think that makes the game more enjoyable to play.

The Xbox Series S features lesser hardware compared to Xbox Series and Microsoft is pushing it as a 1440p/60fps console. Do you think it will be able to hold up for the graphically intensive next-gen games?

Players will be able to run Maiden of Black Water on Xbox Series S at the same framerate and resolution as the Xbox Series X version.

"As this title was prepared for the 20th anniversary of the series, we do not have any plans at the moment. However, the reactions we have received from everyone have exceeded our expectations, so I’d like to consider this moving forward."

Super Resolution is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. How do you think this will help game developers?

While we are not implementing this feature, I think it will make games appear even more realistic.

What resolution and frame rate does the game target on the Switch in docked and undocked modes?

It will run in 1280×720 for the handheld mode and 1920×1080 for the TV mode.

What are your thoughts on the Steam Deck? Do you have plans for any specific optimizations for the device?

We don’t have any plans currently, but I think the Steam Deck is a very great platform so I’d want a version for it as well.

Fatal Frame's series director Makoto Shibata has hinted at the possibility of more remasters of previous entries in the franchise.

In a recent interview with JP Games, Fatal Frame’s series director Makoto Shibata said that similar to the upcoming Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, more games in the horror series could get remasters in the future, based on the positive way fans have reacted to the upcoming release.

That being said, he also stated that no plans are currently underway, but the development team would definitely have a look at the possibility. He said, “As this title was prepared for the 20th anniversary of the series, we currently don’t have any plans to develop any other remastered versions. However, the reactions we have received from everyone have exceed our expectations, so I’d like to consider this moving forward.”

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water‘s upcoming re-release includes remastered visuals and a new photo mode, among other things. The game was previously exclusive to the Wii U, so its certainly great that more fans now get to try it.

Koei Tecmo's horror game returns- here's what you should know about it.

In spite of how many fans Koei Tecmo’s horror series Fatal Frame has, it has always been a bit of a niche franchise. Its last mainline entry, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, launched exclusively for the Wii U back in 2014- and the series’ inherently niche nature combined with the extremely limited player base of the Wii U meant that the game was always fighting an uphill battle when it came to mainstream penetration and sales. Seven years on from its original release though, it’s being given a new lease of life, with Koei Tecmo bringing the game to modern consoles, and for the first time for a Fatal Frame game in a while, to non-Nintendo platforms as well. And as we count the days down to its imminent launch, here, we’re going to talk about a few key details you should know about the game itself, followed by the big talking points of what to expect from its upcoming remaster.

STORY

Fatal Frame as a series has always been very heavily focused on pure supernatural horror, rather than the sci-fi horror of more popular franchises like Resident Evil, and Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water very much sticks to that template. The game is set on the fictional Hikami Mountain, a place that has a long and notorious history of cases of suicides and supernatural occurrences, stemming largely from maidens that would be sacrificed to keep a malevolent power known as the Black Water at bay using their own mystical abilities. When one maiden in particular failed in her duties in the past though, the Black Water was let loose, and the mountain and its spirits were corrupted by the evil being.

CHARACTERS

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water tells its story from the perspective of three primary protagonists. There’s Miu Hinasaki, the daughter of Miku Hinasaki, a character that fans of the series will be quite familiar with. There’s Yuri Kozukata, a descendant of the mountain maidens who can use her abilities to bring people stuck in the shadow world back into the real world. Last but not least, there’s Ren Hojo, Yuri’s friend and an author, who heads to the mountain for research purposes for his writing, but finds himself entangled in a nightmare that he could not have predicted. Various maidens of the past also play a crucial role in the story.

CAMERA OBSCURA

The Camera Obscura is a mainstay of the Fatal Frame series, and perhaps the one thing that Koei Tecmo’s horror games are most commonly associated with. But for those you’re not too familiar with Fatal Frame and what it’s all about, what exactly is the Camera Obscura? Well, it’s literally your lens into the game’s world and the horrors it hides. It serves as your primary means for both defense and attack against the malevolent spirits that you cross paths with. Once you whip out the camera during combat, the game switches to a first person perspective, and depending on factors such as the distance and angles of the shots that you take with it, you will deal varying amounts of damage to the ghosts you’re fighting against.

UPDATED VISUALS

As far as playable content is concerned, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water’s upcoming remaster is going to be largely similar to the original Wii U release, with everything from the post-game Ayane content to, of course, the base game itself being brought over as is. Some other areas of the game area being tweaked though. For starters, as you’d expect from any remaster, there will be visual improvements. Curiously, Koei Tecmo hasn’t provided any concrete details on exactly how visuals will be improved other than promising sharper resolutions, but hopefully, they’ll take the opportunity to make some notable changes, especially seeing as there’s plenty of room for graphical improvement for any game that launched for the Wii U several years ago.

PHOTO MODE

Photo modes have become something of an industry-wide standard in recent years, and though by no means a necessity or something that actively affects a game’s core gameplay experience, they’re always a nice added bonus. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water’s remaster is going to feature a new photo mode as well- which only makes sense when you consider how central taking photos is to the core gameplay loop here. Players will be able to freely move and place characters and ghosts, apply filters and frames, and mess around with other options, such as depth of field, focal length, and aperture.

NEW COSTUMES AND ACCESSORIES

The selection of costumes available in Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is going to be “slightly altered”, as Koei Tecmo puts it. For starters, the Zelda and Zero Suit Samus costumes that were originally included in the game on the Wii U are not coming back, seeing as the remaster, unlike the original, won’t be published by Nintendo, and will be a multiplatform release. Meanwhile, some new costumes are also being added, with Miu and Yuri having four costumes available, with Ren getting only one. New accessories are also being added in, with both Niu and Yuri getting four new cosmetic options each. Poor Ren gets left out once again.

UPGRADE PATH

When Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water launches, where PlayStation and Xbox are concerned, it will receive native versions on both active generations of both platforms. Thankfully, unlike several other cross-gen releases these days, Fatal Frame will not demand additional money if you want to upgrade from the PS4 or Xbox One to the game’s PS5 or Xbox Series X/S version, with Koei Tecmo confirming that free next-gen upgrades will be offered to everyone who gets the game on last-gen hardware.

PC REQUIREMENTS

As a seven year old Wii U game, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water’s PC requirements aren’t exactly demanding. On minimum settings (which will run the game at 720p and 60 FPS), you’ll require 4 GB of RAM, at least an Intel Core i5 750, and either a GeForce GTX 660 or a Radeon RX 550. Meanwhile, on recommended settings (which will run the game at 1080p and 60 FPS), you’ll need 8 GB of RAM, an Intel Core i7 2600, and either a GeForce GTX 960 or a Radeon RX 570. Meanwhile, on both settings, you’ll require 25 GB of storage space.

SERIES’ FUTURE

The future of Fatal Frame as a series has looked murky for a while, and the less-than-stellar sales and lukewarm critical reception that Maiden of Black Water saw when it released for the Wii U is surely responsible for that to a great extent. But if the upcoming remaster should do well, it might pave the way for more new games in the series. Speaking in an interview with Famitsu, when asked about the possibility of sequels if Maiden of Black Water does well, series producer Keisuke Kikuchi said: “That’s what I’m hoping. We’re releasing this game to commemorate the series’ 20th anniversary, and we’re hoping a lot of fans will take take the opportunity to play the game. We’d love this to lead to a new title.” Here’s hoping that does happen then, because you can never have too many good horror games- and when Fatal Frame is at its best, it’s really good.

Explore Mt. Hikami with three different protagonists and attempt to uncover its secrets when Koei Tecmo's horror classic releases later this month.

Koei Tecmo released a new trailer for Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, its 2014 Wii U horror title that’s coming to previous and current gen platforms this month. It serves as an overview of the gameplay, from the strange phenomena occurring on Mt. Hikami to the various ghosts that players can track. Check it out below.

The mountain factored into many beliefs as the residents worshiped water. However, it wasn’t long before a number of terrible incidents came to light. The story sees three characters – Yuri Kozukata, Miu Hinasaki, and Ren Hojo – exploring Hikami and attempting to unearth its secrets. Each has their own unique missions and can use Shadow Reading to sense the memories of those who have passed.

Once combat becomes necessary, they can use the Camera Obscura, taking pictures to deal damage. It can also be used to reveal hidden things, including lost items. For the re-release, the screen resolution has seen improvements while the Ghost List and controls have been updated. This in addition to the new Snap Mode, which serves as a photo mode for placing characters and ghosts freely to take shots.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is out on October 28th for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.

The Fall season is still chock-full of big releases with October having some major sequels, enticing indie titles and some long-awaited returns.

After the sheer magnitude of releases in September, October is looking a little more relaxed. Which isn’t to say there aren’t some big games to look forward to, especially as the Fall/Winter release season enters full swing. Let’s take a look at 10 of the biggest games releasing in October 2021.

FIFA 22

You know the story – another year, another slew of loot boxes/gaming/premium RNG pulls with FIFA 22. EA Sports is promising more than 90 stadiums, over 700 teams and upwards of 30 leagues this time around. Career Mode also returns and sees you starting from the lower divisions before entering the professional leagues. Volta Football and the usual FIFA Ultimate Team mode also return and some big revamps with the gameplay are promised, yet again.

These include HyperMotion which creates organic player movement based on real 11v11 matches; new personality types for goalkeepers; a new Perks system for players; and so on and so forth. Unfortunately, HyperMotion won’t be available for previous-gen owners, PC players won’t get graphical options akin to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version, and Switch owners just get the Legacy Edition with updated rosters and bare minimum improvements. Long story short, it’s a new FIFA and it’s out on October 1st.

Jett: The Far Shore

A more melancholic and existential approach to space exploration, Jett: The Far Shore sees space scout Mei venturing to an ocean-based planet to investigate the mysterious “hymnwave.” Utilizing a spacecraft called “jett”, players will analyze various flora and fauna while traversing the surface. There’s no combat so you’ll have to use the environment to escape from any threats. In between bouts of exploration, Mei will interact with other scouts in first person, providing more context on the universe as a whole. Mysterious but quietly endearing, Jett: The Far Shore releases on October 5th for PS4, PS5 and PC.

Far Cry 6

Civil unrest, rebellion and outright chaos – Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 offers this and much more when it releases on October 7th for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, PC and Google Stadia. Taking place in Yara, the story sees Dani Rojas battling “El Presidente” Anton Castillo (played by Giancarlo Esposito). Along with rallying the guerrillas, Dani will utilize animal companions that can cause some serious hurt – along with homemade weaponry and Resolver Backpacks to dismantle Castillo’s forces. Campaign co-op, weapon customization and activities like hunting and liberating camps should still be expected though.

Metroid Dread

Developed by MercurySteam of Metroid: Samus Returns fame, Metroid Dread sees our bounty hunter venturing to Planet ZDR to investigate a strange signal. What she discovers are multiple malfunctioning E.M.M.I. robots that are hunting her and a mysterious foe resembling the Chozo.

Along with carefully sneaking by E.M.M.I., Samus can use optical camouflage to try and avoid them. This is in addition to new abilities like the Storm Missile for locking on with Free Aim and unleashing a missile barrage and Flash Step for quickly dashing. Launching on October 8th for the Nintendo Switch, Metroid Dread is looking to be a classic.

Back 4 Blood

Horde shooters aren’t exactly in short supply these days and Back 4 Blood isn’t trying to re-invent the wheel. It’s from Turtle Rock Studios and acts as a spiritual successor to their popular Left 4 Dead series. The setting focuses on the world being overrun by the Ridden while a group of humans called the Cleaners are determined to fight back. Each Cleaner has a unique perk that can help their team and in turn, the Ridden have special variants like the Ogre, Snitch and so on that can cause problems.

Cards are meant to be the real game-changer as players can choose various beneficiary effects – like faster reload speed, more headshot damage etc – while the AI director chooses Corruption cards to further up the challenge. Each campaign run promises to be different as a result but there’s also PvP with a team of Cleaners attempting to fortify and survive against waves of Ridden (which include player-controlled Infected). Back 4 Blood releases on October 12th for Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC with cross-platform support.

Alan Wake Remastered

Even if it’s just a remaster of his first adventure, Alan Wake is back, traveling to Bright Falls to unravel and understand the darkness within. The remaster of the classic thriller offers 4K resolution support, though it’s actually an internal resolution of 1440p outputted to 2160p on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S (PC seemingly gets native 4K though). Ray tracing and HDR support are understandably not included, but there are plenty of significant improvements to the character models, lighting, environmental detail and texture quality. The remaster also includes both expansions – The Signal and The Writer – along with free upgrades for previous to current-gen console owners. It’s out on October 5th for PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Any Marvel property even remotely associated with Square Enix will raise a few eyebrows after Marvel’s Avengers. Nevertheless, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy – developed solely by Eidos Montreal – is a single-player action adventure whose narrative promises choices that can influence the outcome. Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, Groot and Drax the Destroyer are once again involved in a galactic-scale misadventure, one that involves the Nova Corps, Lady Hellbender and other threats, and it’s up to them to save the day. Combat is in third person with only Star-Lord being playable and the other Guardians controlled via the AI, though occasionally, our hero can initiate a “Team Huddle” to rouse everyone and provide benefits.

Releasing on October 26th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy could help redeem the publisher’s super-hero efforts.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water

Koei Tecmo’s 2014 horror title Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is getting a new lease on life when it releases on October 28th for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch. The story once again sees players battling against ghosts using the Camera Obscura, taking pictures to inflict massive damage. So it seems appropriate that Photo Mode has been added to the remaster with the ability to customize lens types, backgrounds and characters for each photo. Xbox One and PS4 players can also avail of upgrades to the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions for free.

Riders Republic

Though it may seem like another extreme sports title in the vein of Steep, Riders Republic offers chaotic races with more than 50 players (on current gen platforms, that is). Incorporating activities like mountain biking, snowboarding, skiing, wingsuit flying and rocket wingsuits, each with their own unique progression in Career Mode, Riders Republic also provides a massive world composed of numerous national parks, from Bryce Canyon to Grand Teton. It’s aiming for a pseudo-MMO experience while also providing a 6v6 tricks-based competitive mode and extensive cosmetic customization. Beta impressions have been positive thus far so we’ll see if it has any longevity after releasing for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC and Google Stadia on October 28th.

Solar Ash

From Heart Machine, the developer behind Hyper Light Drifter, comes a new fully 3D adventure. Solar Ash is about Rei, who traverses through the black hole-esque Ultravoid to prevent the destruction of her planet. The Ultravoid is a strange place though, full of the remnants of various civilizations with alternate gravity and surreal platforming. There’s a heavier emphasis on movement and exploration as Rei grapples, grinds and battles enormous boss-like foes in her quest. While a bit more unorthodox than the studio’s previous work, Solar Ash still looks good en route to its release on October 26th for PS4, PS5 and PC.

The remaster of the last Fatal Frame game gets an extended playthrough demo via the Japanese outlet Famitsu.

After years of being in the grave, the Fatal Frame series will rise again with a remaster of the last entry in the series, Maiden of Black Water. Also for the first time in many years, the game will not just be on Nintendo platforms and will once again see itself come to a variety of platforms. The title was originally a Wii U title that released in Japan first and then came to North America and Europe afterward a good while after Japanese launch. Due to all those circumstances, it’d be understandable if you happened to miss it when it came around the first time in 2014. Now you can get a very lengthy look at the game with a new Japanese demo.

Coming from the latest episode of Famitsu LIVE, we got to see a lot of the early game, almost a full hour in fact. The video, which you can see below, is in Japanese with both Japanese text and commentary. So you may be a little lost if you don’t know the language, but if you’re curious how the game plays or what the environments will feel like, you can get a pretty solid idea.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water will release for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC on October 28th, and will include a free upgrade to next gen consoles for those on current systems.

Keisuke Kikuchi has hopes that the upcoming remaster for the series' 20th anniversary will lead to a new roll of film for the horror franchise.

It’s been a long time since we last saw the Fatal Frame franchise, over half a decade in fact, but it will return later this year with a re-release of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. The game originally came out on the Wii U and was the final new title in the franchise. It’ll get a new lease on life now, and the series Producer hopes that won’t be the only thing new that’ll come from it.

Speaking to Famitsu (and as transcribed and translated by the folks at Nintendo Everything), Keisuke Kikuchi talked about the upcoming remaster. Kikuchi has served as a Producer on the entire series, and he expressed the hope that Maiden of Black Water will be enough to garner interest for a new game. Specifically he said, “That’s what I’m hoping. We’re releasing this game to commemorate the series’ 20th anniversary, and we’re hoping a lot of fans will take take the opportunity to play the game. We’d love this to lead to a new title.”

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water‘s re-release will be the first title in the franchise to not be exclusive to Nintendo hardware since 2008 when the franchise came under the company’s publishing with Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, a game that was never localized outside Japan. In the past, Kikuchi has said a new game in the series was up to Nintendo, but with the new multiplatform release, it’s unclear what the relationship is like now and how much Nintendo will have to be involved with a potential new title. Maiden of Black Water is set to release on October 28th for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
