MercurySteam minority stakeholder Nordisk Games has revealed that the studio has two major unannounced titles in the works.

MercurySteam delivered one of the better games in recent years with Metroid Dread in 2021, following the studio seems to have moved on to not one, but two new projects that are simultaneously in the works.

That’s as per a recent financial report by Nordisk Games, owner of a 40% minority stake in MercurySteam, which stated that the Spanish studio currently has two “large undisclosed” games in the works (via @MauroNL3 on Twitter).

One of these games is known to be a dark fantasy action RPG codenamed Project Iron, which will be co-published by MercurySteam and 505 Games. What the second game is remains up in the air for now, of course, but Metroid fans will be hoping that the studio is working with Nintendo on the next mainline 2D instalment in the series.

When asked recently about whether MercurySteam had Metroid 6 in the works, CEO Enric Álvarez was reluctant to say much one way or another. Read more on that through here.

Metroid Dread developer MercurySteam's CEO Enric Álvarez says the Switch title has sold over "three point something million" copies.

As far as its critical reception and legacy are concerned, there’s little doubt that Metroid is one Nintendo’s most prestigious franchises, though that success has hardly ever been reflected to the same degree in terms of sales. Though Metroid games have sold decent numbers over the years, they have never even come close to matching the sales of the likes of The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, Splatoon, or Animal Crossing.

Even Metroid Dread, which launched in 2021 to widespread critical acclaim and went on to become the series’ highest-selling game to date, has only sold over 2.9 million units worldwide- well, until recently, at least. Metroid Dread developer MercurySteam’s CEO Enric Álvarez has revealed that Metroid Dread has exceeded 3 million units sold worldwide, which is a pretty slight increase in over a year’s time, but does still mean the game has hit another commercial milestone.

Speaking recently with Gamereactor, when asked about whether Metroid Dread’s development was “chaotic” – as some reports have suggested in the aftermath of the game’s launch – Álvarez refuted the notion, pointing to the game’s critical and commercial success as evidence of a smooth development cycle.

“I don’t think the development was chaotic,” he said. “A chaotic development doesn’t end with one of the best games in the franchise. It does not end with a game that has sold more than three point something million copies. It doesn’t end with a game that has won TGA awards. That’s all I have to say about it.”

Of course, “three point something” can mean anything between 3 million units sold and 3.9 million units sold, but even though we don’t have a specific number for where the game’s sales currently stand, it is, nonetheless, a figure that the series hasn’t ever breached in the past.

In the same interview, Álvarez also spoke about whether MercurySteam was working on another new 2D Metroid game, and unsurprisingly, was reluctant to say much one way or another.

Metroid Dread is available on the Nintendo Switch.

MercurySteam CEO Enric Álvarez is reluctant to talk about whether the studio is working with Nintendo on another Metroid game.

As the studio behind Metroid: Samus Returns and Metroid Dread, Spanish developer MercurySteam has proven itself capable of meeting the high expectations that go hand-in-hand with a new mainline 2D Metroid game. With both games – Dread in particular – also having both critically and commercially successful, it’s no surprise that there’s already been plenty of speculation regarding whether the studio will be working with Nintendo on another 2D Metroid game in the future.

MercurySteam itself is, as you might imagine, unwilling to say much on the topic. Speaking recently with Gamereactor, when asked if the studio had a follow-up to Metrid Dread in the works, MercurySteam CEO Enric Álvarez was reluctant to say much one way or another.

“Well, about the projects we are doing today, there is nothing I can say,” he said. “So a simple ‘no comment’ will suffice.”

He did, however, note that José Luis, who directed both of MercurySteam’s Metroid games, is still part of the team at the studio.

“The only thing I can say is that José Luis is still in the studio. Period,” Álvarez said.

Metroid Dread has sold over 2.9 million units, and received near-universal acclaim from critics and audiences alike upon its launch in 2021. Interestingly, Metroid series producer Yoshio Sakamoto has also said on multiple occasions that though Dread was the conclusion to the series’ original 2D era arc, it is not the last 2D Metroid instalment.

In our review of Metroid Dread, we awarded it a score of 10/10, saying, “Metroid Dread is a superlative return to one of the medium’s stalwart franchises, and an incredible triumph of design.” Read the full review through here.

MercurySteam is currently also working on a dark fantasy third person action RPG, which will be co-published by 505 Games.

Nintendo has announced updates sales figures for Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Mario Party Superstars, Metroid Dread, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD.

Along with providing updated lifetime sales figures for the Nintendo Switch and the new Pokemon games, Nintendo has also done the same for a number of other Switch titles in its latest fiscal report, including several that have launched over the last year. Prime among them, of course, is Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which has sold 2.65 million units worldwide.

Another game that’s continuing to do well for itself is Mario Party Superstars, which stands at 6.88 million units sold worldwide. That’s up from 5.43 million units as of the end of the previous quarter, which ended December 31. Then there’s Metroid Dread, sales for which have certainly slowed down, currently standing at 2.9 million units, up from 2.74 million. Even so, that makes it the highest selling Metroid game to date, surpassing Metroid Prime.

Other notable sales number updates include The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD currently standing at 3.91 million units, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury at 9.43 million units, Splatoon 2 at 13.3 million units, and Luigi’s Mansion 3 at 11.43 million units.

Nintendo has also revealed updated sales figures for the Switch’s top 10 best-selling first party-published titles. Read more on that through here.

Battle 12 bosses in one continuous order, eliminate as many as possible in 5 minutes or try to conquer them all without taking any damage.

MercurySteam has released a new update for Metroid Dread, providing three new modes for fans to challenge themselves with. Boss Rush, as the name indicates, is about fighting bosses in one continuous order. There are 12 in total with damage carrying over between fights (though ammo is restored in between).

If you’re having trouble with any particular boss, then it’s possible to fight them solo in “Practice” mode. Survival Rush is a time trial-esque mode where the player competes to eliminate as many bosses as possible in five minutes. Damage received and ammo spent carries over between fights but you’ll receive a time bonus after defeating a boss (which can increase if no damage is taken).

Finally, Dread Rush is essentially Boss Rush mode but one-hit kill rules. Take a single hit and it’s game over. Once again, it’s possible to take on bosses from Dread Rush, one-on-one, in “Practice” mode. Boss Rush is unlocked upon completing the game while Survival Rush requires completing Boss Rush or Dread Rush. Dread Rush is unlocked by finishing the game on Dread Mode.

Check out the full patch notes below for more details. Metroid Dread is available for Nintendo Switch – read our official review here.

Update Ver. 2.1.0

New Modes Added

Three different boss rush modes have been added to the game. Press the R Button on the “Samus Files” screen to move to the Boss Rush selection screen.

Boss Rush

A mode where players fight 12 continuous boss battles, and aim for the best time.

Any damage received is carried-over into the next fight. Weapons are fully-restored between battles.

If Samus is defeated, players may select “Retry” to continue playing from the start of the battle they lost. There is, however, a time penalty for being defeated.

Bosses fought in Boss Rush can be fought one-on-one at any time by selecting “Practice”.
*Unlocked by clearing the main game a single time. (In the event that a player has completed the game before the update was released, they will be able to play Boss Rush immediately after updating).

Survival Rush

A mode where players see how many bosses they can defeat inside of the 5 minute time limit.

Any damage received, or weapons spent are carried-over into the next battle. Even if time remains on the clock, Samus being defeated will result in a game over.

Defeating a boss will add a fixed amount of time to the countdown clock. Defeat a boss without receiving any damage to receive an even bigger time bonus.
*Survival Rush is unlocked by completing either Boss Rush or Dread Rush.

Dread Rush

The basic rules are the same as in Boss Rush, but if Samus is hit by a boss, her energy drops to zero and she is defeated.

Bosses fought in Dread Rush can be fought one-on-one at any time by selecting “Practice”.
*Unlocked by clearing the main game using Dread Mode. (In the event that a player has completed Dread Mode before the update was released, they will be able to play Dread Rush immediately after updating).

General Fixes

Fixed an error where the Game Over screen would not display properly when Samus takes damage and is defeated immediately after destroying a central unit.

As revealed by journalist Christopher Dring on Twitter, Metroid Dread is now the best-selling 2D Metroid game in the UK.

With stellar action and enticing exploration, it seems fair to say that Metroid Dread is, simply put, one hell of a game. The game has performed really well on the commercial front, too- so well that Metroid Dread is now the best-selling 2D Metroid in the UK.

As revealed by GamesIndustry.biz’s Christopher Dring on Twitter, Metroid Dread is the third-best selling Metroid game in the UK, behind Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Of course, this makes it the best selling 2D Metroid game in the UK to date. A point worth noting here is that this conclusion is drawn without taking digital sales into account, which will likely make it the best selling Metroid game of all time (in the UK, at least).

According to the NPD Group, Metroid Dread sold around 854,000 units in the US in its launch month alone, while Nintendo has confirmed that its worldwide sales stand at more than 2.74 million units as of the end of 2021. While details on the highly-anticipated Metroid Prime 4 remain scant for now, series producer Yoshio Sakamoto has reassured fans that Metroid Dread is not the ultimate end 2D Metroid– read more on that through here.

Metroid Dread is now the third biggest Metroid game in UK history, behind Metroid Prime and Prime 3. It’s already the UK’s best-selling 2D Metroid. This doesn’t include digital sales, so it’s quite likely it’s now, or will soon be, the No.1 Metroid overall (GfK data)

The game receives the one-hit kill Dread Mode for the masochists, and a Rookie Mode for those who want a more relaxed experience.

Metroid Dread was one of the best games of 2021, but it was also one of the most challenging games of the year. There was a contingent of people out there who wished the game was easier so they could enjoy it better, but at the same time, there were many who adored the game’s difficulty, and may even have wished for more. No matter which side of the debate you fall on, you’re going to have something new to be happy about.

Nintendo has made the surprise announcement of a free new update for Metroid Dread, which is live now and adds new difficulty modes. Dread Mode sees Samus dying the moment she gets hit regardless of how much health she has left, while Rookie Mode, as its name suggests, provides a much more easygoing experience for those who want to play with the game but might not be looking for too much of a challenge.

In addition to all of this, the game will also be adding a Boss Rush Mode in April for free- so there’s plenty of reasons to go back to Metroid Dread (or perhaps try it for the first time) in the near future.

Metroid Dread is available on Nintendo Switch. You can read our review of the game through here.

Several developers from the first party PlayStation studio mentions the likes of Deathloop, Metroid Dread, Returnal, Inscryption, and more as their highlights of the year.

It’s that time of the year again, where, before looking ahead to what lies in the future, we take a look back at the last 12 months and all the best games they brought with them. And of course, game developers have their own takes on that as well. Recently, Naughty Dog published a blog on its website in which various developers from the studio have highlighted some of their favourite games of 2021.

The game that comes out on top for the most people is Arkane’s Deathloop, with game director Matthew Gallant, development director Waylon Brinck, and game director Kurt Margenau all naming it as their favourite game of 2021. It Takes Two is also a popular choice, while other major releases of the year like Metroid Dread, Returnal, Inscryption, and The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes also being highlighted.

Some games that released prior to 2021 have also been recognized by some at Naughty Dog, including the likes of Frostpunk, Fortnite, and Bugnax. Overall, it’s a pretty diverse selection of games- and pretty much every single one of them is worth playing, so they’re good picks, too.

Naughty Dog itself had a fairly quiet year in 2021, after having released The Last of Us Part 2 in the previous year. There’s no official word on what lies next for the studio, but we do know that a standalone multiplayer The Last of Us game is in the works, while leaks have also claimed that a ground-up remake of the original The Last of Us title is also in development.

Deathloop leads the way with a total of nine nominations, while Ratchet and Clank follows with six of its own, and Psychonauts 2 and It Takes Two with five each.

The complete list of nominees for each of the thirty categories in this year’s The Game Awards has been revealed, and the main category – Game of the Year – features an interesting list of games. Deathloop, It Takes Two, Metroid Dread, Psychonauts 2, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and Resident Evil Village have been nominated for the biggest honour of the year this year.

Of course, there can only be a total of six nominees in the category each year, but many have brought up several notable omissions. The most notable, of course, is Forza Horizon 5, which, being the highest rated game of the year, seems like a particularly significant one. Others that were rated highly by critics and audiences alike that didn’t get the nod include the likes of Returnal, Hitman 3, and Monster Hunter Rise. Interestingly, Cyberpunk 2077, which launched after the cutoff for last year’s event and is eligible this year, has been nominated in the Best Role Playing Game category.

Meanwhile, Deathloop has emerged as the most nominated game of the year, receiving a total of nine nominations. It is followed by Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, which has six nominations, and Psychonauts 2 and It Takes Two, which have five nominations each. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Resident Evil Village both have four nominations each, while a number of games follow behind with three nominations each, namely Forza Horizon 3, Returnal, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, The Artful Escape, Life is Strange: True Colors, and Far Cry 6. Meanwhile, Cyberpunk 2077, Monster Hunter Rise, and Back 4 Blood each have two nominations apiece.

In the Most Anticipated Game category, Elden Ring, God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Starfield have been nominated.

You can check out the full list of categories and nominees below.

The Game Awards 2021 show is set for December 9. In addition to the awards, there will, of course, also be several new announcements and updates at the event, with the show’s creator and producer Geoff Keighley confirming that about 40-50 games will be featured.

That makes it the long-running series' best ever launch in the region to date, which should (hopefully) lead to a brighter future for it.

As recently revealed by the NPD Group, Metroid Dread was the third best-selling game in the US in October, managing the best ever launch for a Metroid game in the region to date. In doing so, it ended up nearly doubling the launch sales of 2002’s Metroid Prime, the game that has held that honour until now.

Speaking recently with The Washington Post, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser provided more details on exactly how the new installment’s launch went. According to Bowser, Metroid Dread sold nearly a million copies in the US throughout the month of October- 854,000 units, to be precise, which is an impressive figure no matter how you cut it, but especially for a Metroid game, given the series’ lackluster commercial track record over the years.

The Switch exclusive title has been enjoying solid sales in other regions of the world as well. In Japan, it immediately became the fourth best-selling Metroid game in the region upon release, while in the UK, it became the fastest-selling Metroid game ever.

Now that Metroid has finally seen its long overdue breakout hit, hopefully things will turn around for the franchise. As for what the future holds for it, Metroid Prime 4 is currently in development at Retro Studios, while recent rumours have strongly suggested that an ambitious remaster of the original Metroid Prime is also in the works. Read more on that through here. Meanwhile, Metroid series producer Yoshio Sakamoto has also said that Nintendo will continue to make more 2D Metroid games in the future.
