The recently-released Monster Hunter Wilds sits at 10.1 million units sold, while World's Iceborn expansion hits 15.2 million units.

2025 is obviously a big year for the Monster Hunter franchise, thanks to the launch of Monster Hunter Wilds, but unsurprisingly, its previous releases are also continuing to sell at a steady pace. That’s as per updated sales figures provided by Capcom on its Platinum Titles page.

As of March 31, Monster Hunter Wilds has now sold a total of 28.5 million units, including sales for its Master Edition (which also includes the Iceborne expansion). That’s up from 28.1 million units as of the end of 2024. Meanwhile, Iceborne’s standalone sales now stand at 15.2 million units, up from 14.9 million units three months prior.

Monster Hunter Rise is also continuing to move numbers. It now sits at 17.1 million units sold, having added 400,000 units to its lifetime sales over the course of the January-March quarter. Meanwhile Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak has crossed 9.8 million units sold, 9.4 million units.

Then there’s Monster Hunter Wilds, of course, which has sold 10.1 million units since its February release up until March 31, a marginal increase from the previously announced 10 million figure.

Capcom has also announced updated sales for Resident Evil titles. Read more on that through here.

The Monster Hunter franchise is full of brutal monsters. Here are 25 of the most challenging and why they're so nightmarish to fight.

The Monster Hunter franchise is no stranger to challenging boss fights. When your whole gameplay loop revolves around slaying monsters to craft better gear to face tougher monsters, it’s a given that some difficulties will arise. However, from the very beginning to its more recent entries, Monster Hunter has doled out some of the most arduous bosses in gaming. Without further ado, here are the top 25 most difficult monsters, starting with…

25. Safi’jiiva (Iceborne)

If Xeno’jiiva was the somewhat awkward final boss for World, then Safi’jiiva is its revenge arc. As a Siege quest, it has the same requirements as Kulve Taroth – 16 Hunters in separate groups of four, battling and breaking its parts to slay it. The difference is its sheer power and range of attacks, especially the beams, which it can fire off at a moment’s notice. It also possesses a supernova attack that, like Behemoth’s Ecliptic Meteor, recovers by running behind cover to evade. While it becomes easier as you bring more suitable weapons for breaking its parts and taking advantage of the environment, soloing Safi’jiiva is another endeavor entirely.

Iceborne and Sunbreak also continue to record impressive sales, with the former at 14.9 million and the latter at 9.40 million.

Though Resident Evil 2 remake continues to reach new sales milestones, it’s vastly behind Capcom’s best-selling title of all time: Monster Hunter World. In its updated Platinum Titles list, the publisher confirmed 28.10 million units sold as of December 31st, 2024. It’s over one million units higher since its previous sales milestone (27 million).

Of course, the figure includes Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Master Edition, which bundles the base game and its expansion. The former has sold 21.30 million units on its own while Iceborne is at 14.90 million sales. Meanwhile, Monster Hunter Rise has sold 16.70 million, up from 16 million, while its Sunbreak expansion is at 9.40 million sales.

Capcom is currently prepping for the launch of Monster Hunter Wilds on February 28th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. A second open beta is scheduled for later this week, though the action RPG will receive 15 minutes of new details on February 4th, 2 PM PT.

Meanwhile, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne has now sold 14 million units, while Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak sits at 8.8 million units sold.

Monster Hunter continues to be Capcom’s biggest seller, to no surprise. Excitement surrounding Monster Hunter Wilds is obviously high, and if the numbers for its recent open beta are anything to go by, the action RPG is going to sell quite well (if we’re putting it mildly) when it releases next year. Until then, however, sales for previous Monster Hunter titles aren’t slowing down either.

Capcom has announced that Monster Hunter Wilds has sold 27 million units worldwide as of September 30. That’s up from 26.3 million units as of the end of the previous quarter, which means the game sold an additional 700,000 units over the course of the quarter. Keep in mind that that total also includes sales for the Master Edition, which bundles the base game with the Iceborne expansion. Speaking of which, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne now stands at 14 million units sold, up from the previous quarter by 600,000 units.

Meanwhile, Monster Hunter Rise now stands at 16 million units sold. It stood at 15.4 million units previously, and has added 600,000 more sales over the course of the quarter that ended September 30. Its expansion, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, stands at 8.8 million units sold, having sold an additional 400,000 units during the quarter.

Total franchise sales for Monster Hunter are now at 105 million units worldwide across all platforms and all instalments, up from the end of the previous quarter by 2 million units.

Meanwhile, the Monster Hunter franchise's cumulative sales have now hit 103 million units sold worldwide, Capcom has announced.

Monster Hunter World and Rise are the sort of games that refuse to stop selling, but the excitement surrounding the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds has seen the two titles enjoy significantly boosted sales over recent months in particular, which is something that’s reflected in the updated sales figures provided for both games by Capcom.

The company recently shared its most recent quarterly fiscal report, in which it revealed that Monster Hunter World (including its Iceborne Master Edition) has sold 26.323 million units worldwide as of June 30, having sold nearly an additional million units over the course of the April-June quarter. Meanwhile, Monster Hunter Rise stands at 15.459 million units sold, having sold 725,000 units in Q1 of the ongoing fiscal year.

Monster Hunter World’s expansion, Iceborne, now stands at over 13.4 million units sold (up by over 819,000 units), while Monster Hunter Rise’s expansion, Sunbreak, stands at 8.42 million units sold (up by 672,000 units). In total, the Monster Hunter series’ cumulative series stand at 103 million units sold worldwide, which is up from 100 million units as of the end of the previous quarter.

Players with save data for the base game and/or expansion can unlock classic Palico armor sets and weapons for use in Wilds.

If you can’t wait for Monster Hunter Wilds, launching in 2025, then Capcom has provided somewhat of an incentive to play Monster Hunter World and its expansion, Iceborne. PS5 players who have save data for either release (or both) can unlock some bonus items for their Palico in Wilds.

A Felyne Leather Set and Felyne Acorn Spade will be available for those with Monster Hunter World save data. If you have save data for Iceborne, another armor set and weapon – the Felyne Duffel Set and Felyne Trekker Peckaxe – will be unlocked. It’s unclear if you need to finish both or have data for the same.

Nevertheless, starting Monster Hunter World and Iceborne is incentive enough and a nice rewards for those who hopped on with the Return to World Campaign. Check out our review for the former and latter in the meantime.

Monster Hunter Wilds will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC next year. A new trailer debuts at Summer Game Fest on June 7th, revealing a new, never-before-seen monster.
Monster Hunter World sits at 25.3 million units sold worldwide, while Monster Hunter Rise climbs up to 14.7 million.

Multiple Resident Evil titles are continuing to sell at an impressive pace, and unsurprisingly, the Monster Hunter franchise is also performing in similar fashion for Capcom. The company has provided updated sales figures for a number of its titles on its Platinum Titles page, and predictably enough, Monster Hunter remains a big seller for the Japanese giant.

As of March 31, Monster Hunter World has sold 20.1 million units, but combined with its Master Edition (which also includes the Iceborne expansion), sales for the game stand at 25.3 million units, up from earlier in the year by 300,000 units. Meanwhile, Iceborne alone has enjoyed impressive sales as well, selling an addition million units over the course of the January-March quarter to take its total up to 12.6 million units.

Monster Hunter Rise is also continuing to post strong numbers, which isn’t surprising either. Its sales now stand at 14.7 million units worldwide, which is an increase of half a million, while its expansion, Sunbreak, sold an additional 600,000 units, taking its total up to 7.7 million units.

Collectively, the franchise has now hit the 100 million units sold milestone, with an additional three million units sold since earlier in the year.

Capcom is currently at work on Monster Hunter Wilds, the franchise’s next mainline instalment, which is due out sometime next year.

That number includes sales of Monster Hunter World, as well as sales of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Master Edition, which compiles the base game and its expansion.

The action RPG is Capcom’s highest-selling game of all time. As of December 31, its cumulative sales stood at 24.1 million units across all platforms, so clearly it has continued to see sustained sales over the following couple of months- as it has done over the course of several years.

The Monster Hunter franchise’s cumulative sales stand at 97 million units worldwide as of December 31. The series’ next mainline entry, Monster Hunter Wilds, is set to launch sometime in 2025. Meanwhile, June 14 will see the launch of a remaster of Monster Hunter Stories on PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC, and a port of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin on PS4.

Launched in 2018, the action RPG has seen an explosion of players on Steam. Here's why and what makes Monster Hunter World so great.

2024 has only just begun, and there have been several noteworthy developments. The critical response for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is strong, and a free demo is available now. Big-name titles like Tekken 8 and Like a Dragon: Infinite are nearly upon us, and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is drumming up discussion – again – for looking underwhelming.

So, it’s perhaps strange to see Monster Hunter World setting new concurrent player records on Steam and driving engagement. This isn’t to say the action RPG doesn’t have a healthy player base, especially since it launched in 2018, but since December 9th, 2023, the player numbers on PC have risen steadily. It peaked at 163,267 players on January 7th, 2024 – its last major peak was at launch with 169,921 concurrent players.

Keep in mind the level of hype at the time, not just from console players experiencing it on PC, but also from brand new players diving into the series for the first time. It’s rare to see a title, especially one almost six years old with a relatively recent sequel, achieving the same highs as at launch. So the question is: What’s going on?

Fortunately, the answer is far less insidious here. Ever since Monster Hunter Rise’s release on the Nintendo Switch in 2021, there have been speculations of a brand new Monster Hunter for PlayStation and Xbox, maybe leveraging the current-gen consoles. World remained fairly popular after the release of Rise and Sunbreak, but dare anyone hope that Monster Hunter World 2 was in the works?

Cut to 2023, and after the last major update for Sunbreak, speculation began again after the developer teased some new key Hunter art for its 20th-anniversary celebration. Thankfully, we didn’t have to wait long for an announcement as Monster Hunter Wilds was finally revealed at The Game Awards on December 10th.

Exclusive to Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC, the trailer teased new interactions with mounts, from gliding and leaping on rocks to thunderstorms and herds of wild animals. Before we could ask about the new armor or environment, the camera panned out to reveal a massive landscape, teasing the return of World’s approach to giant regions brimming with targets to hunt. However, it has a release window of 2025. Yes, Grand Theft Auto 6 also generated tons of hype with its reveal trailer despite targeting the same year, but a new Monster Hunter wouldn’t generate the same mania. Right?

Even if it didn’t, the developer was one step ahead in engaging potential new players. It announced the Return to World campaign a day after the announcement of Wilds, with a whopping 67 percent discount on Steam. A series of weekly community livestreams, essentially a fresh playthrough of the action RPG, also began on December 14th, with several blogs chronicling the journey through different regions.

One may look at the initiative and wonder, “Surely, that’s not enough to usher in such growth?” As it turns out, the Return to World campaign was in the right place at the right time. A massive discount to help onboard new players into World and Iceborne, the start of the holidays allowing players extensive amounts of time to dive into its intricate systems – it all worked out perfectly. Of course, it didn’t hurt that the developer tapped into one of its most valuable assets – the existing Monster Hunter community.

You see, in Monster Hunter, you face some daunting challenges, especially when everything is brand new. You have to juggle between sharpening your weapon, keeping your stamina topped up, gathering tracks to pursue a monster, and keeping track of your scoutflies while avoiding any hazardous wildlife.

Getting lost in the festoonery of the Ancient Forest or the bright lights and floating fauna of the Coral Highlands is as mesmerizing as frustrating. Don’t even get me started on the actual fights – Great Jagras, Kulu-Ya-Ku, and Pukei-Pukei may be forgiving enough, but once you enter the Wildspire Waste and encounter your first Barroth, all bets are off.

Suddenly, it’s a battle against roar-stuns, status conditions, impeded movement and more as you struggle to get a few hits in. At some point through this exercise, you realize that your equipment and weapon need upgrades, which means hunting many of the same monsters and grinding away until morale improves.

However, eventually, things start to click. Monster patterns become more apparent and predictable. You begin to notice the environment and how it can be used to trigger traps to deal massive damage. You begin to master that awesome Longsword or Insect Glaive and pull off some sick combos, turning your targets into prey. Then, after a climactic send-off to Zorah Magdaros and celebrating with the NPC friends gained along the way, you’re informed that Low Rank is over. High Rank has begun. Cue the beginning of the cycle once more, and again in Master Rank with Iceborne.

Long-time players have been there and struggled through quests, mechanics and systems, trying to hunt Raging Brachydios for its weapons, grinding through Safi’jiiva for its arsenal and the perfect upgrades, and dying again and again to Fatalis. At some point or another, you run into hunters who helped you through. So when a new player comes in and tries to understand it all, there’s a sense of camaraderie, of paying it forward.

Of course, taking your Master Rank gear into Lower or High Rank hunts to utterly abuse the monsters who made life miserable is also appealing. Plus it’s an opportunity to pick up a new weapon type and learn it all the way through, resulting in a brand-new experience for you as well. You also get some neat rewards.

The surge of new players is also discovering what many have known for years (and are rediscovering now): Monster Hunter World is a blast. Rise has its merits, especially when it comes to streamlining many elements. Don’t get me wrong – fighting RNG to get a single Attack Jewel, nevermind an Attack Jewel 4, is still a nightmare. Joining a quest, only to see randoms drop like flies and end it prematurely, is also annoying, and so help me if Flinch Free isn’t mandatory in some scenarios.

But the sheer range of content, from Siege quests where you work with other players through multi-stage quests to weaken and slay Safi’jiiva or Kulve Taroth, is just so enjoyable. The combat also holds up incredibly well, even if I’m still not the biggest fan of the Clutch Claw. Nailing that Helmsplitter, seeing those big damage numbers from a True Charged Slash or executing a Perfect Rush still feels great. The replay value of Monster Hunter truly shines with how diverse and fun each weapon type is.

Monster Hunter World has surpassed 23 million copies since its launch, which includes the base game and Iceborne Master Edition. It garnered universal praise from critics, introduced a new generation of console players to the series’ magic, and offered hundreds, if not thousands of hours, of fun for players. Monster Hunter Wilds may seem a ways off, but as Eileen the Crow once said, a hunter must hunt, and World offers no shortage of fun in that regard.
