It’s not enough that Capcom has unveiled new monsters for Monster Hunter Wilds or more in-depth ecosystems – there are also gameplay features new to the series. The developer confirmed that all 14 weapon types from previous games, from Long Sword and Sword and Shield to Dual Blades and Heavy Bowgun, are returning.
Each offers “plenty of new actions,” with the Greatsword and Heavy Bowgun seen in the new gameplay trailer. There will be more details on all the additional actions “in the future,” but Wilds also introduces a new feature: Focus Mode.
Capcom describes it as offering “more precise control over how they guard, aim, and attack to target a monster’s weak points for big damage.” It also makes it “easier to adjust your distance to the monster and aim your attacks, making the distinctive Monster Hunter hunting action more accessible to a wider variety of players.”
While we need to see more gameplay on how it works, even longtime players will find a use, as certain weapons have “distinctive moves” exclusive to Focus Mode. The Hook Slinger is also new, based on the Slinger from previous titles. It can grab items from and activate some “contextual actions.”
Monster Hunter Wilds arrives in 2025 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. Stay tuned for further details in the meantime.
