With over six million units sold worldwide in less than three weeks, Capcom's latest is a monster hit in almost every way possible.

After becoming the fastest-selling title in the franchise’s history, it shouldn’t be surprising that Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem is already the year’s best-selling game in the United States. Granted, we’re only considering February’s sales charts, as revealed by Circana’s Mat Piscatella. However, since it was available for two days and managed to top storefronts on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, it’s still impressive.

Even more incredible is that its launch-week dollar sales are over 60 percent higher than Resident Evil Village. Unit sales are up by over 40 percent with bundles not included. Once again, it’s not too surprising, especially since it quickly sold over six million units in 18 days compared to Village’s 4.5 million in one month.

Other notable debuts in February include Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined at seventh place, followed by Mario Tennis Fever in 11th place (only accounting for physical sales) and God of War: Sons of Sparta in 14th. Even the Resident Evil Generation Pack, which is sadly unavailable after March 31st, managed to chart at 20th place.

As for Requiem fans, there’s more to come with story DLC confirmed to be in the works. It allegedly focuses on Leon and apparently even features Ada Wong, mysteriously absent during the base game’s events, in some fashion.

Retailing for $89.99, the Resident Evil Generation Pack represents insane value, so it makes sense that Capcom is pulling it soon.

Amid the success of Resident Evil Requiem, which is now the series’ biggest launch on Steam, it’s important to remember that Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and Resident Evil 7: biohazard Gold Edition are also available on the Switch 2. Both are excellent ports and well worth playing, especially with the Resident Evil Generation Pack offering all three games for just $89.99.

Of course, with Resident Evil Requiem retailing for $69.99, this means you’re getting the other two for just $30 – an insane deal. Maybe a little too insane, though, as the eShop listing for the bundle indicates that it won’t be available after March 31st, 11:59 PM EDT. The individual titles will still be available to purchase.

However, considering their prices – biohazard costs $39.99 while Village is $49.99 – the Generation Pack remains the superior purchase. The fact that you also get all their DLC, including the Winters’ Expansion, just makes it all the sweeter.

For more details on the Switch 2 ports, check out our reviews for Resident Evil 7: biohazard and Resident Evil Village. As for Resident Evil Requiem, we reviewed it on PS5 and gave it a nine out of ten. It’s easily one of the best titles in the series and, based on reported pre-orders, might be Capcom’s most successful yet.

Resident Evil Village is an essential Switch 2 pick for anyone who wants survival horror tension with blockbuster action.

Resident Evil Village is a special game – following up on Resident Evil 7’s successful reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise as a first person experienced refocusing on the series’ survival horror roots, Village delivered a similarly smartly designed experience that not only delivered yet more chilling horror, but also cranked things up a notch on the action front and took players to a more expanded and open setting than RE7’s spectacularly claustrophobic Baker residence.

Now, five years on from its original release, the developer has brought Resident Evil Village over to the Nintendo Switch 2, to go along with the Switch 2 release of Resident Evil 7 and Requiem, and unsurprisingly, the game hasn’t lost any of its charm. Village’s Switch 2 port is an impressive one that does justice to the excellent game that it is.

"When Ethan awakens, he finds himself in a village of shadows of nightmares, where he will have to take on everything from werewolf-like lycans and vampiric monstrosities to zombies and much more."

Resident Evil Village, the eighth mainline entry in the long-running horror series, is set a handful of years after the events of RE7. Ethan, Mia, and their infant daughter Rose now live under BSAA’s protective custody in a remote village in Eastern Europe, and though the Winters are trying to put their past behind them and start fresh, understandably, the horrors that they witnessed and experienced in the Baker residence still cling on like a corruption.

In the game’s opening moments, things get disastrously and abruptly worse when a squad of soldiers led by none other than Chris Redfield breaks into the Winters’ home, executes Mia in front of Ethan, kidnaps Rose, and knocks out Ethan and takes him captive. When Ethan awakens, he finds himself in a village of shadows of nightmares, where he will have to take on everything from werewolf-like lycans and vampiric monstrosities to zombies and much more.

Resident Evil Village’s story is far from perfect, as even its staunchest fans will tell you, but to its credit, it remains consistently enjoyable. I won’t be getting into spoilers here, but some late-game narrative reveals retroactively hurt several elements of the plot (especially where Chris is concerned), but by and large, there’s a lot to like here. Village boasts plenty of strong characters (some of the villains and the Duke being particular highlights), has plenty of ties to the larger Resident Evil story that veteran fans will find fascinating, and of course, serves as a satisfying conclusion to the Winters storyline, especially with how it recontextualizes a lot of Resident Evil 7 with some of its reveals.

"Of course, where Village truly shines is not with its storytelling, but with its gameplay and design."

Of course, where Village truly shines is not with its storytelling, but with its gameplay and design. As opposed to the pure and unrelenting horror of Resident Evil 7, Village dials things slightly back with the scares, while cranking things up a notch where the action is concerned. Of course, when the game is trying to be frightening – which it often is – it does so very effectively, but a large share of the experience is also focused on intense, grueling action that clearly takes heavy cues from Resident Evil 5. Thankfully, Village is excellent at both, and also maintains a great balance between its horror and action sides for the majority of the experience.

Add to that impressive enemy variety (and design), excellent boss fights, and spectacular encounter design, and what you get is a game that knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat in more ways than one.

Of particular note are RE8’s level design strengths, and how well they encourage exploration. Not only is the titular village itself a great hub location that remains a joy to explore throughout the experience, other sections of the game also stand out. Castle Dimitrescu is obviously a particular highlight, and though I know that the late-game Heisenberg’s Factory is a bit divisive among fans, I personally happen to absolutely love it (though the haunted dollhouse does seem like a bit of a drag on playthroughs, to be fair). Regardless, it’s fair to say that on no few occasions, Village exhibits top-notch level design that is multilayered, interconnected, and engaging and rewarding to explore in all the ways that you would want from a Resident Evil title.

The action is also expanded on through meaningful, well thought out progression mechanics. The aforementioned Duke serves as a Merchant that Ethan routinely purchases weapons, resources, and upgrades from, while you can also scour your surroundings for different treasures that can also be sold, further encouraging players to properly explore.

Each upgrade or purchase you make feels valuable, not least because of the tight economy, and Village manages to maintain a strong sense of satisfying progression for the majority of the experience. There’s also items to find around the village, allowing further progression. That, of course, makes exploring every nook and cranny of the village and the areas in its vicinity consistently rewarding, with plenty of optional quests, rewards, secrets, and more to be found.

There’s also plenty for players to dive into outside of the meaty 10-12 hour campaign. For starters, there are plenty of unlocks, like the Village of Shadows difficulty, while players can also dive into the Mercenaries mode, which is an absolute blast and boasts surprising replay value. Meanwhile, this being a Gold Edition re-release, on the Nintendo Switch 2, Resident Evil Village also comes with its post-launch expansion, Shadows of Rose, which focuses on Ethan’s daughter Rose several years after the base game’s events.

Shadows of Rose is quite experimental, and more than a bit clunky at times, but though it doesn’t match up to Village’s quality, it is still mostly worth the roughly three hours it demands from players. Meanwhile, the game also offers players the option to play the RE Village base game from a third person perspective- though I personally would not recommend it. Though it’s great that the developer chose to release a free third person mode for Village for those who might wish to play it that way, it’s no secret that the mode is more than a clunky, and definitely not the best way to play the game- which isn’t surprising, given that the game was designed entirely around first person.

"Visually, Resident Evil Village is, in no uncertain terms, a beast. That much was true when the game launched in 2021, and it is still very much true today."

Visually, Resident Evil Village is, in no uncertain terms, a beast. That much was true when the game launched in 2021, and it is still very much true today. Of course, you shouldn’t go into its Switch 2 port expecting it to look as good as, say, the PS5 version, but though it’s a little rougher around the edges, it is still an absolute looker.

The game does admittedly suffer from some slight performance issues on the Switch 2, however- though it maintains a solid 60 FPS in most of the indoor environments, when you’re in an outdoor location (like the main village itself) or in particularly hectic and busy combat situations with a lot of enemies and explosives involved, you will start to notice some frame rate dips. Thankfully, they’re not major drops, and the game still remains perfectly playable even at the worst of times, but the action isn’t as smooth as it is on other platforms.

Ethan Winters’ final chapter (so far) is one of Resident Evil’s highlights, especially in recent years, and a must-play for Switch 2 owners who enjoy good survival horror and thrilling action.

The follow up to Resident Evil Village takes a different approach to the franchise's unique take on survival horror, but just how much has changed since Ethan's last outing?

With a month to go for Resident Evil Requiem’s release at the time of writing, it’s safe to say that survival horror fans all over the world are waiting with bated breath to dive into an adventure that might be the franchise’s best one yet.

Of course, the developer has kept that hype train going full speed in the run-up to its first big release of the year. The latest previews showcase a game that’s confident in the story it’s trying to tell, and in the sublime blend of the franchise’s best elements that it has concocted.

But just how much has changed since Ethan Winters’ attempt to save his daughter from Miranda’s clutches? Quite a lot, actually!

Join us as we dive into the most significant differences between Requiem and Village.

1. Two Protagonists, Twice the Fun

We can’t deny that Ethan was quite the hero, his desperate attempts to save his family blending well with the tension and fear that both Biohazard and Village brought to the table. But Grace Ashcroft and Leon taking the center stage is a great move for the franchise’s thirtieth anniversary, and Requiem might just be a party to remember, considering how distinctly unique each character feels.

Grace relies on stealth and a limited tool kit to survive the horrors she witnesses, while Leon is armed to the teeth and has the skills to use his arsenal to the fullest. That’s a step up from Ethan’s single-kit playstyle, allowing Requiem to bring us a dichotomy that could prove quite entertaining indeed.

2. A Better Combat Lane Split

Requiem has made no secret of the manner in which it has framed Grace and Leon’s distinct approaches to the threats they have to face down in their search for answers. Grace’s inexperience has her relying on evading enemies and using whatever scant resources she can find to get ahead. Leon, on the other hand, controls crowds with style and even a few quips, using his moves and weapons with devastating precision.

It’s quite a change from Village’s reliance on using the same character in different encounters, although Ethan was quite a capable hero in his adventures.

3. A More Dynamic Perspective

Among the many things we find exciting about Requiem, the ability to switch between a first-person and third-person camera on the fly is quite high on the list. While the game sets Grace’s segments to the first-person view and Leon’s to the third-person one, getting to switch between them is sure to be something many players will appreciate.

Village did quite well with its fixed first-person view at launch, and its Winters expansion did bring the third-person camera to the table, but it was nowhere close to the ambitious take on perspectives that Requiem is giving us.

4. Perspective-Specific Animations

Building on the ability to freely change your camera’s POV is the addition of third-person animations for Grace that showcase how her terror threatens to overwhelm her as she attempts to flee to safety. While her panic and the resulting errors she makes because of it aren’t as obvious when you play in the first-person perspective, switching things up has her slipping in pools of blood or tripping over the debris in her way as she tries to escape a rather gruesome end.

That’s quite a change from Village, where the third-person camera was just another viewpoint with no changes to how Ethan dispatched his foes.

5. A Cooler Way To Melee

Ethan’s knife was quite handy during his time in Village, and was a nifty way to get up close and personal with a few pesky enemies if the situation demanded it. But it wasn’t meant to be as potent as his guns, and that was okay in the context of that story.

But Requiem gives Leon a cool-looking hatchet that lets him parry enemy attacks and follow up with deadly counters of his own. It’s a great addition to an already wide range of abilities, and we’re all for this new addition.

6. Staying Sharp During Combat

The developer has been wise not to make things too easy for Leon, though. Yes, the hatchet is a very useful tool, but it does need to be sharpened quite regularly for it to be effective. That’s quite an interesting twist that Village didn’t have, with Ethan’s knife only being used for a bit of stabbing.

Plus, it’s always quite intimidating to watch a badass opponent whip out a sharpening tool in the middle of a fight, even if you are a mindless zombie. It’s a trick Village missed, and we’re glad it’s in the upcoming title.

7. Getting The Drop On The Zombies

While Grace relies on keeping a low profile in Requiem, which is no surprise given her lack of combat training, you might be taken aback to know that Leon can – and does – take a quiet approach pretty often too. He uses his hatchet to sneak up on unwitting zombies and deliver a merciful end to their wretched existence.

Village didn’t really have too many reasons to introduce comparable stealth mechanics to its gameplay loop, given its more action-oriented combat and narrative.

8. Turn Your Enemy’s Weapons Against Them

It was about time Leon got to use a chainsaw, given how many times he’s had to deal with one in the past. But it isn’t something he finds during his exploration. Instead, he grabs it right off an enemy, turning the tide in his favor for quite a while until it runs out of fuel. What’s more, knocking it out of an enemy’s hands makes the chainsaw a deadly obstacle as it spins and hacks the legs of a few unfortunate zombies.

Of course, Village didn’t have that particularly fun spin on combat, and we’re now wondering if it could have been even better if it did.

9. Brutality Baked Into The Gameplay

If you’ve been following Requiem’s pre-release coverage as enthusiastically as we have, you probably already know that Leon doesn’t pull any punches when he’s in a fight. We’ve seen him plant his handy hatchet into enemy skulls alongside roundhouse kicks to the head that smash zombie heads into walls with ruthless efficiency.

The man’s an absolute killing machine in Requiem, while Ethan relied more on his guns and the occasional counter to keep himself alive in Village.

10. A New Blood-Based Crafting System

If you’ve been thinking that Leon gets to have all the fun in Requiem, think again. Grace has a few tricks of her own, chief among them being the ability to craft some deadly items using blood collected from her enemies. The most memorable one is an injection that she uses to make an enemy explode, removing it from the board in one gory instant. There are also healing supplies to be made this way.

Village’s crafting followed a more traditional approach, with its crafting focused more on consumables and ammo.

11. Mutating Corpses

One of the more interesting enemy types in Requiem is the zombie that carries a sort of parasite that mutates it after it is downed in battle, leaving you to deal with an unpleasant surprise if you happen to backtrack to the area in which you defeated it. Grace does have ways to counter that particular twist with her injector, while Leon couldn’t care less, choosing to just blow the new mutated specimen to pieces once again.

However, that was missing in Village where you didn’t have to deal with such twists. That’s perhaps a great thing, thanks to the enemy density in that one, as having corpses that woke up for round two might not have been the best idea in that title.

12. Time to Cook

Requiem’s previews showcase a crafting system that needs you to find and use specific lab equipment to make useful items to use in the field. You’re also going to have to find recipes for those items and analyze them in a lab before they become available for crafting.

Village didn’t gatekeep your crafting abilities in this fashion. However, we think that having to do a complete analysis of the potentially devastating tools you gain access to in Requiem is a solid tactical layer that encourages exploration and diligence, and as such, it’s most welcome.

13. A More System-Driven Stalker

We’re not going to lie, Lady Dimitrescu had us taking breaks from our gameplay more often than we’d have liked, thanks to her ability to chase us down with unerring precision. But those chases were more traditional romps through controlled spaces once we got used to the idea of an aristocratic vampire out to get us.

Requiem’s Stalker takes things up a notch, being able to sniff out your trail, use the pipes and vents in the building to hunt you, and even smash through obstacles once it gets your scent. That’s quite the upgraded skill set, and the game is all the more immersive (and terrifying) as a result.

14. Keeping Things Tight

Requiem’s level design is a lot more claustrophobic than the open level design of Village. Escaping enemies in the latter was a tad easier thanks to the verticality of its environments, allowing you to scale buildings and other obstacles to get to safety or perhaps find a good vantage point from which you could chip away at your enemies.

The cramped hallways and controlled environments in Requiem offer no such solace, and you’re going to have to keep your wits about you as you make your way through its levels.

15. Smarter Enemies, More Chaos

While the Lycans and other enemies in Village were certainly terrifying, Requiem’s zombies come with one crucial challenge: they retain a semblance of who they were before they were infected. That allows for a lot of mechanics like enemies turning off the lights to prevent themselves from being stunned, or some of them being so obsessed with what they were doing before their infection that it’s quite easy to sneak past them as Grace.

There are even zombies that are singers, who use their vocal cords to call in reinforcements, or let off piercing screams that can stun you if you’re not careful. That’s quite the imaginative step up from the cannon fodder Village had to offer if we’re being honest.

Bonus: Bringing The Light

The new and improved RE Engine in Requiem isn’t just for show. Lighting plays an important part in the gameplay loop, a facet that’s quite evident with the Stalker. Village couldn’t make use of the light in such ways thanks to its more open designs and the reliance on darkness in more linear areas.

The lights are a major part of Requiem’s horror, or the temporary relief you can find from it if you manage to find a well-lit room. That’s something we’re thrilled to see and very eager to try out once we get our hands on it.

And that’s some of the differences we believe are going to elevate Requiem over Village. Now all that remains is to have patience and pass the month before we join Grace and Leon on a trip through the past that could very well define the franchise’s future.

Darkest Dungeon 2, art of rally, Expeditions: A MudRunner Game and more also available for Extra and Premium subscribers on January 20th.

After a recent leak, Sony has officially revealed its next assortment of titles coming to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium. It kicks off on January 20th with Resident Evil Village serving as the headliner for PS4 and PS5 fans.

The other major addition is Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the last mainline title in the franchise, which further embraced the turn-based combat introduced in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Other notable additions include A Little to the Left, art of rally, Expeditions: A MudRunner Game, The Exit 8, and Darkest Dungeon 2 – all playable on PS5 and PS4.

Meanwhile, A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is exclusive to PS5 players. Though not the best survival horror/stealth title by any means, it could be a worthwhile experience for those who like the movies. Meanwhile, Premium subscribers, only one PlayStation Classic is coming – Ridge Racer, playable on PS5 and PS4.

It features all the usual classic features, including quick save, rewind, up-rendering, and custom filters. And really, what more can you say, other than it’s Ridge Racer? Whether you’re playing through Time Trials or battling it out against the AI in, well, Battle Mode, it’s the classic arcade racing experience that you (hopefully) know and love.

Other notable titles allegedly coming to both tiers include Expeditions: A MudRunner Game and A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead.

Sony is adding some heavy hitters to PlayStation Plus Game Catalog later today, according to Dealabs’ Billbil-kun. Joining the Until Dawn and Silent Hill 2 remakes, Resident Evil Village will reportedly be available for Extra and Premium subscribers.

This follows its addition to Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and PC on January 20th, so you can likely expect it to go live on the same day. With Resident Evil Requiem launching on February 27th, it’s the perfect time to catch up on the series, even if it’s more about revisiting the tragedy of Raccoon City than the Winters family.

PS Plus is also one-upping Game Pass by allegedly including Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. As you may recall, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio said there were no plans to add it to Microsoft’s subscription service. It seemingly has no issues adding it to Sony’s, though. Both titles will reportedly be available for PS4 and PS5.

Of course, that’s not all. You can also apparently expect Expeditions: A MudRunner Game, The Exit 8 and art of rally for the same platforms as well. Meanwhile, PS5 players gain exclusive access to A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead. The official announcement will apparently go live in a few hours, so stay tuned for updates.

Little Nightmares Enhanced Edition is out today for subscribers, with Final Fantasy and MIO: Memories in Orbit still to come.

Xbox is kicking off the new year in a big way, announcing the first wave of titles coming to Game Pass in January. Starting today, you can get your hands on Little Nightmares Enhanced Edition, experiencing Tarsier Studios’ classic in 4K/60 FPS (that too with all DLC included). It’s available for Ultimate, Premium and PC subscribers.

The real meat is in the rest of the month, however. Star Wars Outlaws, which has undergone numerous revamps and improvements since launch, will be added to the service for Ultimate and PC subscribers on January 13th. If you need to catch up on Resident Evil before Requiem’s launch next month, then why not play Resident Evil Village? It’s coming to the Ultimate, Premium and PC tiers on January 20th.

Premium subscribers are also eating very well this month with Lost in Random: The Eternal Die, Rematch, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine – Master Crafted Edition arriving on January 7th. Final Fantasy – yes, the first one – makes its debut on January 8th for all three tiers, followed by My Little Pony: A Zephyr Heights Mystery on January 15th.

If you’re itching for a new Metroidvania, MIO: Memories in Orbit from the creator of Shady Part of Me will arrive on January 20th for Ultimate and PC subscribers.

Of course, to ring in the new, Microsoft is also doing away with the old. Starting January 15th, the following titles will exit Game Pass:

Flintlock The Siege of Dawn (Cloud, Handheld, PC, and Xbox Series X|S)

Neon White (Cloud, Console, Handheld, and PC)

Road 96 (Cloud, Console, Handheld, and PC)

The Ascent (Cloud, Console, Handheld, and PC)

The Grinch Christmas Adventures (Cloud, Console, Handheld, and PC)

That may not be the case for long, however, as Resident Evil 7: biohazard is closing in on 16 million sales since it launched in 2017.

Capcom’s latest financials don’t paint the best picture for Monster Hunter Wilds post-launch, but it’s not all bad news. Devil May Cry 5 reached nearly 11 million units sold with over 2.1 million copies in the first half of this fiscal year. Then there are the big four Resident Evil titles, which continue to sell well years after launch.

Resident Evil Village is worth pointing out first. It sold 12.872 million copies, with 1.566 million sold in the past two quarters. That puts it above the more recent Resident Evil 4 remake, but the latter is still performing well with 1.266 million sold in the same period for a lifetime total of nearly 11.2 million.

Of course, neither can measure up to 2019’s Resident Evil 2 remake, the current highest-selling title in the series at 16.342 million units sold. However, Resident Evil 7: biohazard shouldn’t be ignored – it’s slowly creeping up towards 16 million units sold with almost 1.2 million sold in this fiscal year thus far.

The title is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 next year in February alongside Resident Evil Village, so it could very well unseat Resident Evil 2 remake in the process.

Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline title, launches on February 27th, 2026, for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Pre-orders go live later today, so expect further details on its price and various editions.

These 15 horror games provide the ultimate in immersion

Horror and immersion go hand in hand. It’s a genre best experienced with all of one’s senses—and what better perspective to heighten that than first-person? Sure, over-the-shoulder camera angles have dominated horror games for some time, but nothing can quite capture the immediacy of a jump scare like the first-person perspective. We’re aware that some especially iconic titles may not be represented here. This is a list comprising hidden gems alongside some other titans of the genre, so don’t be too discouraged if your favorite game isn’t included (and let us know what it is). Without further ado, here’s 15 first-person horror games you absolutely need to try out.

Sons of the Forest

Sons of the Forest is perhaps one of the best-realized fusions of survival sandbox gameplay and horror. At first glance, it seems like just another in a long line of sandbox crafting games. Yet it executes both elements so well that the experience eclipses expectation. Between the uncanny swamp mutant abominations to the unpredictable scenarios and clever diegetic crafting menus, Sons of the Forest is not to be missed.

Layers of Fear (2023)

If you prefer more subtle horror with psychological leanings, Layers of Fear may just end up being a new favorite. Labyrinthine creepy mansion: check. Mysterious past to uncover: check. Heaps of atmospheric storytelling and puzzles to solve: check. This game hits all the marks of classic survival horror from days past, with echoes of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and even The Shining. Fans of the Silent Hill 2 remake should especially consider checking out this gem from Bloober Team.

Ghostwire: Tokyo

Ghostwire: Tokyo takes a more unconventional approach to horror, ditching the ‘survival’ aspect and replacing it with some good old karate….with magic. The atmosphere of the game is a highlight. Shibuya is haunted and desolate, with nothing but neon lights and abandoned belongings of those who went missing. Your adversaries are modern-day interpretations of Yokai from Japanese folklore. These take the form of blank-faced salarymen and headless schoolgirls to name just a few. The fast-paced action of the magic karate doesn’t take away from the unsettled nature of the empty Tokyo streets or the creative enemy designs.

Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil does all the things excellent survival horror is supposed to be. It situates players into a vulnerable position with lack of resources, and the atmosphere and zombies are downright terrifying. Resident Evil Village does the classic formula and vibe well, filling the journey with a blend of slower-paced exploration and puzzles with tense set-piece moments and boss fights. Village does a particularly good job with its contrasting environments and themes. The baroque Castle Dimetrescu feels so distinct from Heisenberg’s industrial factory. And it’s all framed through an interesting folktale lens to boot.

Amnesia: Rebirth

The Amnesia series does one thing better than pretty much every other horror series: instilling vulnerability to the player. Like previous Amnesia titles, Rebirth features no combat. Encounters must be overcome through escapes, puzzle-solving, and exploration. But unlike other past games, Rebirth takes place out in the desert instead of a factory or other claustrophobic interior. You play as Tasi, a pregnant woman searching for her missing crew within the vast Algerian desert. You’re still sneaking through interiors such as pitch-black caverns and creepy abandoned ruins though, so it retains that dark atmosphere despite its unique setting.

System Shock Remake

For those itching for deep choice-driven gameplay mechanics, System Shock Remake is a sure bet. The original is a seminal classic in the survival horror space, being one of the first immersive sim games to reach broad appeal. The ship’s AI, SHODAN, remains one of the more engaging villains in the genre. The sci-fi ship almost feels haunted by SHODAN, with the persistent monitoring and sabotage of various ship systems engaging the player’s every move. The game’s atmosphere compliments her constant presence with eerie rattles and distorted sounds almost too well, and the modern remake polishes those scares to a beautiful and terrifying shine.

Choo-Choo Charles

Taking a different turn is the indie game Choo-Choo Charles. This is the ideal horror game on the list if you don’t have a lot of time to invest as it only takes around 3 to 4 to go through. The premise is both unique and simple. You collect eggs and do tasks for NPCs in order to summon the villainous train, Charles, to defeat him. It’s a unique and charming concept and Charles’ jump scare attacks provide ample scares.

Visage

Visage is another indie horror game but this one is often lauded as a spiritual successor to P.T. You’re stuck exploring a 1980s suburban mansion, one that’s both haunted and filled with locked doors. Aside from the numerous puzzles to solve, you must keep your sanity in check by avoiding dark zones and ghost attacks. Those looking for an unpredictable P.T.-like experience owe it to themselves to play Visage.

The Mortuary Assistant

Ever want to inspect dead bodies and exorcise demons in a video game? Well, This solo-developed indie horror title provides that and then some. The Mortuary Assistant puts the player into the shoes of a newly trained assistant at a morgue, tasked with performing her job of preparing corpses for burial. However, it isn’t just another mundane job; demons regularly inhabit the corpses and Rebecca must exorcise them out in-between her paid work. The story is somewhat procedural as well, providing a good amount of replayability.

Ad Infinitum

Ad Infinitum represents yet another creative premise on this list. Players take on the role of a World War 1 vet coming home to take care of an ailing father. The horror takes form from the trauma suffered in the trenches. This trauma is represented by monsters scouring the house through the mind of the veteran. In gameplay terms, this means solving puzzles around the large house while overcoming the threat of monsters.

Phasmophobia

Phasmophobia is perhaps the most widely played game on the list, which may come as a surprise for some. Social deduction games have been popular of late, and Phasmophobia channels that chaotic premise into a terrifying horror atmosphere. Investigating ghosts as a team may not sound like the most terrifying thing compared to other horror games, but the slow unraveling and eventual reveal of the ghost, and the player’s possession by it, can be a shock, even in a group setting.

Still Wakes the Deep

Described as “The Thing on an oil rig”, Still Wakes the Deep is another game on the list with no combat whatsoever. Players must rely on stealth and avoidance when it comes to monster encounters. The oil rig evolves as the story progresses, with previously explored areas becoming flooded or wrecked. The lack of a HUD helps sell the atmosphere even more. If you enjoy traditional explorative horror, give Still Wakes the Deep a try.

Nightmare of Decay

For those on a tight budget, this $4 indie horror game just might do the trick, especially for fans of old school action horror titles. Nightmare of Decay plays a bit like a first-person Resident Evil 2 with its generous ammo supply and healthy number of zombies infesting the mansion. And there’s plenty of mansion to explore here with puzzles and numerous weapon types scattered about. This is a hidden gem for the Resident Evil 2 fans.

Stay Out of the House

You didn’t think we’d get through this list without a slasher themed horror game, did you? Stay Out of the House is a straight-up cannibal escape simulator. Your goal is simply to survive from the serial killer cannibal stalking the house and surrounding neighborhood. It’s done on a budget, but with tasteful retro filters to make the PS1 aesthetic charming rather than a detriment.

The Outlast Trials

The Outlast Trials is a clever take on cooperative horror gameplay. The game follows a structure that updates the player’s abilities upon successful trials. It’s one of those titles with superb gameplay/story integration. Set during the Cold War, recruits are sent to compete in trials against failed recruits who have become psychologically deranged and dangerous. There’s plenty of lore through radio recordings and environmental details that enrich the experience beyond that of just another horror game.
