Microsoft has announced the July 2022 line-up of free games for Xbox Live Gold subscribers as part of its Games with Gold service.

Microsoft has announced the Games With Gold line-up for July 2022. In July, subscribers will get Beasts of Maravilla Island, Relicta, Thrillville: Off the Rails, and Torchlight.

Beasts of Maravilla Island revolves around taking pictures of elusive creatures on a mysterious, dreamlike island. It features a 3D jungle where players can explore, climb, and solve puzzles. Beasts of Maravilla Island will be available from July 1 to July 31.

Relicta has players play as a physicist stranded on an eerie derelict moon base. Players have to explore the base by manipulating gravity and magnetism to solve puzzles. Relicta will be available from July 16 to August 15.

Thrillville: Off the Rails revolves around running your own theme park. It features five new parks and 100 new missions. Players can also ride all the crazy roller coasters they design. Thrillville: Off the Rails will be available from July 1 to July 15.

Torchlight is a single-player action RPG. Players can choose one from three character classes, each with their own unique abilities and equipment requirements. Torchlight will be available from July 16 to July 31.

The Neverwinter publisher has been placed in "the loving care of the Gearbox Publishing wing of games, and we couldn’t be happier to join their family."

Following its acquisition by The Embracer Group this past December, Perfect World Entertainment is now a part of Gearbox Publishing. In an official post, the publisher states that it’s been placed in “the loving care of the Gearbox Publishing wing of games, and we couldn’t be happier to join their family.”

The change is essentially a “new makeover” – the organization along with its employees remains the same. All current titles for the company like Star Trek Online, Have a Nice Death and Neverwinter will continue to receive new content. Games like Remnant: From the Ashes and the Torchlight Trilogy also remain under its purview with “more amazing new games to come!”

The only real change that will be seen is the Perfect World Entertainment logo being replaced with that of Gearbox Publishing (though it will take some time before it’s reflected in its games). Newsletters and support tickets will also now come from @GearboxSF.com.

As for Gearbox Entertainment, under which Gearbox Software and Gearbox Publishing falls, it recently acquired Lost Boys Interactive. The 220-plus employee studio worked as a support studio on Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and will look to increase this to 350 employees in the next few years.

Torchlight and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow will be available for Xbox 360 as well.

Microsoft has some fairly big releases lined up for Xbox Live Gold subscribers in August 2019. First up is The Coalition’s Gears of War 4, a solid third person cover shooter that continues the excellent original trilogy. It’s available to XBL Gold subscribers from August 1st to 31st.

Then there’s Turn 10 Studios’ Forza Motorsport 6, one of the best racing simulators ever made. This becomes available from August 16th to September 15th. Xbox 360 players get some rather good releases as well – Runic Games’ Torchlight (August 1st to 15th) and Konami’s Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (August 16th to 31st). Both titles are playable on the Xbox One as well, thanks to backwards compatibility.

Overall, that’s more than $94 in game value for all of these games. Giving away Gears of War 4 is actually a pretty smart strategy for Microsoft. The Coalition’s Gears 5 is out on September 10th, and this allows new players to catch up with the storyline before hopping in. We expect more details on the upcoming sequel’s Horde mode at Gamescom in August, so stay tuned.

Limbo will be the next free offering on July 18th.

Echtra Games may be developing Torchlight Frontiers, bringing the franchise into the free to play space. However, you can enjoy the first Torchlight by Runic Games for free via the Epic Games Store. You need to have an Epic Games account and download the launcher to claim it.

Torchlight is quite the outstanding action RPG, created by former Diablo developers and featuring some stellar combat. Players can also have different pets that will carry their gear and could be sent to town to sell it. The game will be free until July 18th.

On that day, Playdead’s Limbo will become the next free offering. A classic in its own right, Limbo is a monochromatic platformer starring a child traversing limbo in search of his sister. It will be available from July 18th to 25th. In the meantime, grab Torchlight while you can (and maybe check out its equally stellar sequel Torchlight 2 later).

Discount offer on sequel available till November 30th.

Isometric action RPG title Torchlight is available for free. No, seriously. It’s absolutely free. All you have to do is head to the Arc Games website, install the Arc client and you’ll be able to download Torchlight for your own personal play. The best part is that once you get it, it’s yours forever.

The sequel Torchlight 2 is also available at a low price of $5. The sequel adds many new elements including co-op play, a brand new story and campaign and many other goodies. This deal will be valid until November 30th though.

If you haven’t heard of Torchlight, then it’s best described as the alternative to the Diablo series. Much like Blizzard Entertainment’s action RPG, you’ll choose a class, roam the world completing missions and earning sick loot, slotting gems into said loot and just clicking until your fingers go numb. And yes, it is addictive.

Will you be picking up Torchlight and its sequel? Let us know in the comments.

CEO Max Schaefer "overwhelmed" by reception for the game.

Hack and slash, loot-based dungeon crawler Torchlight 2 is a hit for developer Runic Games, reportedly selling more than 2 million units since launching in September 2012.

Runic CEO Max Schaefer stated that, “We are overwhelmed by the reception for Torchlight II. To hit this milestone is a testament not only to our dedicated development team, but also to the greatest, most positive gaming community I’ve ever seen.”

Runic president Travis Baldree also stated that the Torchlight community played a big part in improving the game and staying active since the game’s launch. “It wouldn’t have been possible without you, and we’re humbled and grateful at your response.”

The original Torchlight managed to sell 1 million units but reached this target after 2 years. This means that the sequel has managed to sell twice as much in less than half the time. Check out our review of Torchlight 2 here to learn why it’s one of the best hack and slash, loot-collecting games you’ll ever play.

Torchlight certainly managed to wow us all last year when it was released, with its refreshing fusion of classic point and click adventures, and Diablo-esque loot collection mechanics. And while the cult classic has often had numerous criticisms levelled at it for being highly single player oriented, there have been talks of an MMO based on the breakthrough single player experience.

Now, PCGamer UK has revealed some details about this strongly anticipated title- apparently, Torchlight the MMO will be a free-to-play game supported by microtransactions, which is odd, considering the developers’ aversion to microtransactions, as they have expressed many times in the past.

Even more interesting is the game design:

“Our vision is to have an MMO that plays as close to single player as we can get it. It will have the same focus on relatively fast action: carving your way through hordes of monsters with a large number of hugely devastating skills. The game has to be solo-able, but players will have to have skills that make them useful in a party and make them work together.”

That certainly sounds like a novel take on the idea. As far as I can make out, it’s almost just the same as Torchlight, just with more players plonked on to the field. Will it turn out good? We can only hope.

Every once in a while a really good indie game comes out, this time it’s an Action Hack and Slash RPG game called Torchlight for the PC.

You start the game by selecting one of the three classes available: The Destroyer which is the melee class in the game, using maces and swords, The Alchemist which is the spell casting class in the game, using wands and staffs, and The Vanquisher which is the ranged class in the game, using bows and rifles.

Once you choose your class, you get to choose your pet, and pets will guide you through the entire game, attacking your enemies and even selling items for you which i will further explain later on. There are 2 types of pets, Dogs and Cats, they don’t differ from each other in any type of way other than looks, so this one is just personal pereference.

You start in the town of Torchlight, which is the only town in the game, so this is the only place you can sell or buy items, do quests and other stuff. The Town is above a mining area which has a corruption of Ember inside it, so you are on the quest to try and destroy that Ember. There is only 1 entrance to the zone where you fight monsters and level up (not counting portals that open up when you start a quest) and you always go down and down deeper into the dungeon, so you might think that the game is small in scale in terms of areas to fight, but trust me- its not. You will find yourself wandering around a lot until you find the right place to go to, and its sometimes worth doing so because of hidden passages you can find. For example you need to go forward, but instead you can cut left and kill a few monsters, which will then reveal a hidden passage which will lead you to some treasures and help you out, so I highly suggest not going straight forward all the time unless you are 100% positive you visted all the possible directions.

Of course just like any other RPG, once you level up you get to choose which points and skills you want to add to your character. Since there are only 3 classes your choice should be very simple; if you are a Destroyer choose Strength if you are a Alchemist choose Magic, and if you are a Vanquisher choose Dexterity. Skills differ depending on your class but they are also pereference only, you can add to which ever you want depending on your level.

Like I mentioned before, you get to choose Pets, now I will further explain on the “your pet can sell stuff for you” thing: If your package is full, you can put all the items you want in the Pet’s Package, you can then tell him to go to town and sell those items for you while you stay and finish off that monster, the pets return will depend on where you are, if you are deep in the dungeon it will take about a minute, if you are very close to Torchlight it should take a few seconds, this is something I always wanted actually; I hate it when I have so much stuff I want to sell but I’m too lazy to go all the way back to town to sell them and then come back. The Pet is a great and unique addition in that respect. But thats not all, Your Pet can equipe rings and necklaces to make him stronger, he can even learn spells so he will do them instead of you. In the game you will also find a few fishing spots, in these spots you get to do a really simple minigame where you have to click the mouse once the fish catches the hook, if you catch a fish you can feed him to your pet which will then turn him into a different creature for a few minutes, this is really good to do when you are in a big fight, feeding your pet will make him stronger and more efficient.

One thing I highly dislike about the game is the main quest or campaign. You first strart by meeting with this guy Brink who (SPOILER ALERT) gets mutated by this evil wizard, sure its cool and all but you don’t know who Brink is, you don’t know who the magician is, and hell you even don’t know what’s the story behind Torchlight, so the story is really a disappointment in my opinion but it sure doesn’t take anything away from the great gameplay and replay value the game has.

Speaking of replay value, every level in the game is comepletely randomized, even in quests, all the levels lead up to the same place, but they you can go to the same level and it will be different, so you can play the game again in different areas, which I highly recommend you to so you can play with the other classes aswell.

Since this game only carries a $20 pricetag you wouldn’t expect it to have any type of Multiplayer and you are right, the game is single player only, but the developers of the game (Runic Games) have said that they will be releasing a Torchlight MMORPG which will take place about 2 years after the single player campaign.

All in all Torchlight is a great game with the only major issue I had with it was the story, I highly suggest you at least try the demo out and for $20 this game should not be missed out by RPG fans.

This game was reviewed on the PC.
