The next LEGO Star Wars game finally receives a long over-due update, and also shows off quite a bit of new gameplay footage.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was announced over two years ago at this point, and with delays (and more delays) and long periods of complete silence from the game’s developers, many have wondered what exactly is going on with it. As promised though, at Gamescom Opening Night Live, we finally got another long-overdue look at the game.

Plenty of new gameplay footage is shown, showcasing scenes and locations from across the nine movies the game will be covering, and a variety of different playable characters, including the likes of Han Solo, Rey, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Chewbacca, Lando Carlisian, and many more. The game apparently boasts over 300 playable characters, so clearly players will have plenty to choose between. Check out its trailer below.

Meanwhile, a new launch window has also been confirmed for the game. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga launches in Spring 2022 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The action adventure title was originally slated for Spring but faced another delay. It will receive a "world premiere new look" on August 25th.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard about LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Slated to release this past Spring, it would be delayed to an unspecified date due to Traveller’s Tales needing more time. Thankfully, it seems an update is finally coming. Geoff Keighley announced on Twitter that a world premiere new look for the title would be showcased at Gamescom Opening Night Live.

The event takes place on August 25th at 11 AM PT/2 PM ET and will feature over 30 games. Sledgehammer Games’ recently announced Call of Duty: Vanguard was confirmed to be receiving its first playthrough at the show. An announcement for the new Saints Row, which appears to be a reboot, has also been confirmed for the same.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is currently slated for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC. It features all nine Star Wars film episodes with about 300 playable characters, a variety of locations to visit and numerous missions to play. Perhaps a new release date will finally be announced at Gamescom. Stay tuned in the meantime.

Traveller's Tales will provide updated launch timing "as soon as possible."

Originally slated to release this Spring, Traveller’s Tales Games’ LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has been delayed again. Though a new release window wasn’t provided, the developer said on Twitter that it would update the launch timing “as soon as possible.” It revealed that more time was needed in order to make the game “the biggest and best-ever LEGO game.”

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is a pretty ambitious undertaking, packing all nine episodes from the Star Wars film saga into one title. Each episode consists of five missions and players can either go through them all in order or play each one individually. Classic locations like Tatooine, Coruscant, Jakku, Endor and many more will be available to explore.

There are also 300 different characters to play with, from Force users (who can now use light and heavy attacks in combos) to blasters that utilize a third person aiming system. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker is in development for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC. Stay tuned for an update release date in the coming months.

That is a lot of Legos.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was at one point going to come in 2020, but was ultimately pushed back to sometime in Spring of this year. The game is the latest entry in the humorous adaptation of the sci-fi series and will span all nine mainline Star Wars films. There’s a lot of characters in that span, too, as evident by the amount of little Legos you can control.

As detailed by Official PlayStation Magazine (February 2021), Lead Hub Designer of the game, Dawn McDiarmid, said that the game would have roughly 300 playable characters from across the nine stories with a total of around 800 unique characters in total. This is actually even more than was predicted before as last year it was said it’d be around 500. They specifically shout out Babu Frik from the latest film, Rise of Skywalker, as a character that will be playable to show how off the wall some of the playable picks will be.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will release across all major platforms sometime in the Spring. We actually sat down with the game’s Director back in 2019, which you can read in full through here.

You'll have to wait a bit longer for that Star Wars fix.

People love Legos. People love Star Wars, even those that seem to hate Star Wars. The connection between the two seem pretty obvious, and the Lego Star Wars games have shown it to be a successful pairing. There have been multiple titles in the franchise that retell the events of the films with the ultimate package planned to come in Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga which will collect and retell all nine mainline films. But you will have to wait just a bit longer.

We got a new gameplay trailer for the game at this year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live. It was a nice display of what you’d expect from the franchise with some humorous takes on iconic moments and scenes from the film. But it also unfortunately confirmed the game had been pushed back from its original 2020 date into the next year. So you’ll have to be one with the force a little later than expected.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will release on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Switch and PC in Spring 2021. We sat down with the game’s Director to discuss various aspects of the title, which you can read in full through here.

Well, the new trilogy of the Star Wars saga is done and over, and fans were… divided on it overall, I think it’s fair to say. Let’s not get into that can of worms, though, and focus on one thing almost everyone surely loves: Legos! Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was announced last year, spanning all nine mainline movies, with promises of it being more ambitious and bigger than previous entries. And when they said bigger, they meant it.

In an interview with StarWars.com, Managing Producer at Lucasfilm Games Craig Derrick talked about the wealth of characters in the game, revealing it would have almost 500 characters from the Star Wars saga. While he didn’t say how many will be playable, he did say “many” would be, with some big surprises.

“There are nearly 500 characters in this game, with many of them playable. When choosing characters for a game this large, we just looked at every film in the saga and tried to say “yes” as much as possible. That said, it often comes down to storytelling and the specific role of the character in the quests and game progression. Of course, we have almost all of your favorite heroes and villains from the films, many background players, a few surprises, and…Yaddle!”

“Many” is obviously vague, but considering the track record of Lego games, it’s likely going to be an impressive number. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see when the game launches later in 2020, but I imagine there will be a ton of little Legos to chose from.

Last week, Epic Games teased over on their storefront that one of their free giveaways for this week would be Batman-related, with a Batman-shaped collage of Batman pictures. Now we know what that giveaway is. The Epic Games Store is giving away the entire Batman: Arkham Collection – which includes Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Knight – and the entire LEGO Batman trilogy – which includes LEGO Batman, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, and LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham – for free.

Presumably, this is in celebration of Batman Day, the character’s anniversary, which is on September 21st. As always, the criminally underrated and frequently overlooked WB Montreal-developed Batman: Arkham Origins continues to get ignored. Regardless, six free games in one week is still an excellent deal- go and download them now, and they’re yours to keep forever.

Fortnite is also celebrating Batman day. Meanwhile, there’s also been some speculation of late regarding a new Batman: Arkham game- read more on that through here.

Game Director James McLoughlin chats with GamingBolt about the upcoming blocky saga.

Another year, another Lego game. But who could resist Star Wars in Lego form? With crazy and dangerous worlds to explore, zany and lovable characters to play as, and oodles and gobs of bricks to collect and puzzles to solve, it’s easy to get lost in this galaxy that’s far, far away. And we think it’s going to get even easier with Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. This Star Wars Lego game isn’t just an HD remake of the original games, The Skywalker Saga was built from the ground up with new features and story tones that will really make you want to play them again. On top of that this version will include the new trilogy, as well. We had a chance to sit down with The Skywalker Saga‘s Game Director James McLoughlin to find out everything we could about this new entry in the series.

"Generally, throughout the years we’ve been able to enhance [the games] piece by piece. On [The Skywalker Saga], we’ve been able to develop new technology and essentially re-write them all."

Lego Star Wars stretches back to the early 2000s, what are the biggest lessons learned throughout the years?

We’ve learned a lot of lessons. We’ve made a lot of Lego games since then. Not all of the lessons are Star Wars related, if you will. We’ve taken a lot of important people — we’re talking about cameras, we’re talking about combat, talking about AI. Generally, throughout the years we’ve been able to enhance [the games] piece by piece. On [The Skywalker Saga], we’ve been able to develop new technology and essentially re-write them all.

What iterations of new gameplay style can we look forward to in The Skywalker Saga?

The players can fly all the ships, the players can drive all the ground vehicles. The players can experience a fully open world, where they can essentially find all the locations, do side quests, find bricks hidden about. As well, they can take place in one of the intensive set piece missions-which there are five of them, which will tell a story of the film.

The level of interaction is great. What new environmental and character interactions will we see throughout the experience?

Well, new environments— we basically built every planet. So there are a lot of new environments. Character interactions— I think one of the cool things will be seeing characters use the world to their advantage. Like the Force is a powerful tool. It’s a sandbox tool where the player can interact with all Lego, move objects around and find creative ways to complete puzzles. We’ve also got new interactions in levels where the player can play branching story paths— they all lead to the same point, but there’s different ways of actually getting to that point.

"The main thing we wanted to get across is that this is not an HD remake like a lot of people are doing. We’re basically starting from scratch. We’re not even covering the same levels in parts. We’re trying to tell the story slightly differently."

The game is an open world, what can we expect to find in the universe besides the next main story mission?

Essentially, loads of side quests. Loads of locations that didn’t feature heavily in the main story, but the players can still investigate them. For example, you can run around in Yoda’s house interior. You see a tiny bit in like a cut scene or whatever, but you can actually go in there. I know that’s just the tip of the iceberg. You can investigate Hoth, you can investigate Dagobah. We’ve got areas in Kamino. We’ve got areas in the Courascant districts. There are loads and loads of locations to look for and loads of quest to do.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was built from the ground up. Besides the new trilogy, what are the difference between the first two Lego Star Wars trilogies compared to the ones we’ll find in the Skywalker saga?

Well, this is completely new. The main thing we wanted to get across is that this is not an HD remake like a lot of people are doing. We’re basically starting from scratch. We’re not even covering the same levels in parts. We’re trying to tell the story slightly differently. So areas in the original saga, for example, a level may have been a certain thing that’s now just a moment in the whole. But the level we’re doing, we didn’t have the technology to do last time. Like big massive-scale battles we’re flying through space, that kind of thing.

I noticed that C-3PO sounds voiced by Anthony Daniels along with Billie Dee Williams as Lando, are these original voice overs recorded for this game? And if so what familiar Star Wars actors have you got from the franchise to lend their voices for this?

Yes. We’re not releasing the full list of everyone yet. But everyone we have used has been fully Lucas approved. So the actors we’ve used are actors that Lucas has used in other video games. They’ve all been approved, so it’s as official as it can be.

I know it’s been a few years now but What’s the difference between working under Lucasfilm and now Disney?

None for us. They’ve been great. We went with Lucas way back when they weren’t owned by Disney. Now we work with them when they are, and there’s no real difference for us. We interface with Lucas mainly, and we interface with Disney when we need to. But mainly we interface with Lucas, and they always give us great freedoms to do what we want with the license.

"We started from scratch. We wanted to make sure that skill was optional, and not necessary."

Tell us about the overhauled melee system. How is it better than the original Lego Star Wars games?

We started from scratch. We wanted to make sure that skill was optional, and not necessary. So from a kids perspective, young kids can run around and still tap X and fight. But if you want to actually be cool with the combo tree and do different things, you can actually tap X and then move around the face buttons, and do jump attacks or slam attacks. But all is a part of one combo. The idea is to keep the combo going for as long as possible, and you’ll actually generate stunts for doing that.

The world has been abuzz about Star Wars over the weekend. The talk is mostly focused on Star Wars Episode IX and its freshly revealed subtitle, “Rise of Skywalker,” and the polarized reaction to that name, or to the upcoming game from EA and Respawn Entertainment, Jedi: Fallen Order, finally being unveiled. But there was another bit of news that slipped out that seemed to get overshadowed by those big announcements: it looks like we’re going to get another Lego Star Wars game.

During Star Wars Celebration this weekend, Matt Wood of Skywalker Sound (a Disney-owned audio company that works extensively on Star Wars-related projects) let the news slip out that a new Lego Star Wars game was coming, as he talked about the multiple other things coming from the franchise. You can see the video, captured via Instagram, below.

It was little more than a slip of the tongue, so as far as when we’ll see it, what platforms it’s come out on, or what part of the franchise it’ll cover is anyone’s best guess.
