Grand Theft Auto 5 is an absolute behemoth. Though it originally came out in 2013 – six years ago – on the back its supremely successful online component, the game has continued to sell in droves across the world. Just recently, it was announced that the game has shipped over 110 million units worldwide– and we’ve now got another taste of the game’s staying power.
As per data provided by the Entertainment Retail Association (via GamesIndustry), the highest selling game in the UK during the first half of 2019 has been Grand Theft Auto 5. Yes, in spite of all the major new releases and what have you, a six year old game has still managed to top these charts, with sales of over 360,000 units.
It’s even ahead of Rockstar’s own much more recent release, Red Dead Redemption 2, which occupies fourth place with nearly 260,000 units sold. FIFA 19, unsurprisingly, is in second place, while The Division 2 – in spite of lackluster physical sales at launch – is in at third place.
GTA 5 is not the only older game that has continued to perform well though. Ubisoft’s online tactical shooter Rainbow Six Siege is the seventh best selling game in the UK in 2019 so far, with over 175,000 units sold.
Days Gone, which performed consistently well in the UK at launch, has been the best-selling new IP for the year in the region with nearly 230,000 units sold, Anthem is also in the overall top 10, in spite of itself, with over 165,000 units sold. Resident Evil 2 is another notable 2019 launch in the charts, occupying fifth place with sales of nearly 240,000 units.
Collectively, £1.56 billion were spent by UK consumers on games, which is nearly half the expenditure on entertainment media in the country for 2019 so far. Physical video game sales accounted for £184.9 million, down 8.5 per cent over last year. Conversely, digital sales rose 2.4 per cent year-on-year, to £1.38 billion.
