Since announcing nearly two years ago that MachineGames was working on a new Indiana Jones game, Bethesda hasn’t said much (if anything) about the title. We do know, of course, that The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Starfield mastermind Todd Howard is serving as executive producer on the game, and that he wrote the original story for it. Other crucial details about the project remain unknown, however.
For instance, we don’t even know what genre the game will fall into, and it seems the aforementioned Todd Howard isn’t willing to give a very specific answer just yet either. Speaking recently on the Lex Fridman podcast, when asked if the Indiana Jones title will be an action-adventure experience, Howard said that it’s more of a “unique mash-up” that “does a lot of different things.”
“I would just say it is a mash-up,” Howard said. “It is unique. It isn’t one thing intentionally. It does a lot of different things that myself and Jerk [Gustafsson, co-founder of MachineGames] and the folks at MachineGames have wanted to do in a game. It’s a unique thing.”
Meanwhile, echoing previous statements, Howard also expressed his excitement at MachineGames’ work on the project, saying that the studio is “doing an incredible job”, before adding that it’s a “definite love letter to Indiana Jones and everything [to do] with it.”
In the same interview, Howard also spoke about how Starfield’s Xbox console exclusivity has benefited the game’s development, revealed new gameplay details on the space-faring RPG, and touched on the early development of The Elder Scrolls 6.
As for Indiana Jones and when we might hear more concrete details about it, it’s unlikely to be anytime in the near future. In June 2021, Bethesda’s Pete Hines said that the game was still in the “very, very, very early” stages of development.
