Overwatch Director Says Nintendo Can Add Any Hero to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Jeff Kaplan's first choice would be Tracer since she's "our mascot."

Blizzard’s Overwatch will be coming to Switch on October 15th, and it’s no secret that the developer is fan of Nintendo. Some have speculated that it’s only a matter of time before Overwatch heroes make the jump into properties like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. As for who could appear, director Jeff Kaplan says Nintendo can have anyone they want.

Speaking to IGN, Kaplan said, “To the Smash Brothers team, whatever character you want, we love them all. They’re all our babies, you can have any single one of them. We have 31 to choose from.” But does he have any particular preferences?

The choice is obvious: Tracer, the game’s mascot and who appears on all the promotional and box art. “Tracer’s our girl, Tracer’s our mascot. She’d be my first choice. There’s a lot of great runners up. I think a lot of people can immediately see Doomfist gameplay applying to Smash, but if it were up to me, I’d like to see Tracer.” Game producer Wes Yanagi, who’s working with Iron Galaxy on the Switch version, also chose Tracer, but wouldn’t mind seeing Winston added as well.

Thus far, we’ve seen Joker from Persona 5, the Hero from Dragon Quest, and Rare’s Banjo-Kazooie join the crossover fighter, with Fatal Fury’s Terry Bogard arriving in November. There’s one more Challenger Pack left in the current Fighters Pass, but even more DLC fighters will be coming in the future. We’ll see if Overwatch makes the cut, especially as more heroes are added in the coming months.
