The fantasy RPG's name was officially unveiled in 2022, four years after it was confirmed to be in development.

It’s been close to six years since BioWare and EA first officially confirmed that the next Dragon Age was in development, and at this point, we’ve still yet to see anything from the game. Leaks have claimed, however, that the fantasy RPG is set to launch this year, while EA has previously said that a reveal is scheduled for this summer– which has led many to believe that one of the upcoming showcase events could serve as the stage for the game’s formal unveiling.

According to journalist Jeff Grubb, that is indeed going to be the case. Speaking during a recent episode of the Kinda Funny Gamescast, Grubb said that the next Dragon Age game is going to be unveiled at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 10, something that he reiterated afterward on Twitter. According to Grubb, however, though Dragon Age 4 will be there, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf won’t be.

What exactly does that mean? Speculation is rife, as you might imagine, but fellow journalist Jason Schreier has said over on ResetEra that Grubb is referring to the rumour that the game is going to be unveiled with a new name. The subtitle Dreadwolf was unveiled back in 2022.

The Xbox Games Showcase is scheduled for June 10 at 10 AM Pacific. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming days.

Insider Tom Henderson is cryptically teasing an announcement for BioWare's RPG but says not to expect "anything 'huge' per se."

BioWare’s next Dragon Age hasn’t received a new trailer since The Game Awards 2020, though it’s undergone a number of changes. BioWare GM Gary McKay revealed last February that it was in the middle of production and that more news was coming this year. And said news is apparently coming today.

In a recent tweet, insider Tom Henderson tweeted a GIF of a fire-breathing dragon with the words “Dreadwolf. 7 PM CET.” This was followed by a GIF of Matt Damon from Saving Private Ryan as he ages into an old man. It’s all kind of cryptic but Henderson finally said, “I hate teasing… But have to sometimes lol.”

“Combine the GIFs. Don’t expect anything ‘huge’ per se, but an announcement is nEAring.” What’s the meaning behind the capital “EA”? Is the next Dragon Age going into early access? Will its official name and platforms finally be revealed? Has there been a delay, despite reports of the game being in “very good shape” and on track to release by late 2023?

We’ll need to wait till later today for more details, if they’re indeed coming. Stay tuned in the meantime.

Dragon Age 4 executive producer Christian Dailey has left BioWare, while Corinne Busche has been named the project's new director.

Dragon Age 4 has been in the works for quite some time now, and its development has been marked by a number of interesting developments behind-the-scenes that have seen some turnover at BioWare over the years. In December 2020, it was announced that the game’s executive producer Mark Darrah had left the studio, with BioWare Austin studio head Christian Dailey taking his place. Now, Dailey has moved on as well.

The same was confirmed in a blog post on BioWare’s official website, with general manager Gary McKay writing, “As we continue our journey, we wanted to wish Christian Dailey a heartfelt farewell from BioWare. Christian started with us back in 2018 and has been a big influence on our games and leadership team, most recently as Executive Producer over Dragon Age’s development. The games industry is ever-changing though and sometimes folks want to go and try new things – we understand, but we will miss him as a friend and as a colleague.”

In November of last year, meanwhile, it was also confirmed that Dragon Age 4’s creative director Matt Goldman had left the project and the studio as well. Now, it’s been confirmed that Corinne Busche – an EA veteran who has been at the company for 15 years – has taken his place. Busche shared the news on her Twitter page as well, while McKay wrote in the aforementioned blog: “Corrine Busche, who has been leading the design direction for Dragon Age, is our Game Director. She has a wealth of experience, including 15 years at EA, and a passion for the franchise.”

Meanwhile, Mac Walters has been confirmed as the game’s production director. Walters has been involved in a number of major BioWare projects over the years, having been a writer on Jade Empire and Mass Effect, the lead writer on Mass Effect 2 and 3, the creative director on Mass Effect: Andromeda, the narrative director on Anthem, and the project director on last year’s Mass Effect: Legendary Edition. Meanwhile, Benoit Houle, who has been at BioWare for over 16 years, is the game’s director of product development.

In the same blog update, McKay also said that Dragon Age 4 is currently “right in the middle of production”, and that more details on the game will be shared later this year. Read more on that through here.

As for when the RPG will launch, while there’s no official word on that front yet, reports have suggested that the game will release in late 2023.

BioWare GM Gary McKay notes that the blueprint was "completed last year" and the team is focused on "building out our vision."

BioWare provided an update on the next Dragon Age, currently referred to as Dragon Age 4. Studio general manager Gary McKay confirmed that the team is “right in the middle of production.” “Our blueprint was completed last year, so we’re now focused on building out our vision: creating amazing environments, deep characters, strong gameplay, impactful writing, emotional cinematics – and much more. The blueprint for the game is well understood and the team is focused.”

More details and news from the team will be shared later this year with blogs and social content. There will also be “regular communication” with community council players. “As passionate fans like you, we take their feedback seriously. We are also listening to all of you as you share your thoughts and experiences, so keep talking to us!”

As for the next Mass Effect, McKay revealed that the team is “actively prototyping new ideas and experiences.” “AAA next-gen games take a long time to make – and we know our fans may want them sooner. But our Number One priority needs to be quality, and that simply takes time to get it right.”

McKay’s update lines up fairly well with recent reports with journalist Jeff Grubb noting the role-playing game to be in “very good shape.” The team was reported to be hitting milestones and is on schedule, which is about “18 months” from the day of reporting. As such, Grubb expects a release in late 2023 at the earliest so it’s very much possible that it could slip into early 2024.

Official platforms for the next Dragon Age haven’t been announced but it’s rumored to be skipping previous-gen consoles in favor of current gen. As always, stay tuned for more details and updates in the coming months. We may even see a new trailer at the next EA Play Live this Summer.

Jeff Grubb says that development is on schedule, which is "about 18 months out from today" and expects a late 2023 launch at the earliest.

Despite rumors indicating it has “no chance” of releasing in 2022, development on BioWare’s Dragon Age 4 seems to be going well. According to Jeff Grubb on Grubbsnax (via Idle Sloth on Twitter, since the episode is currently only available for GiantBomb Premium subscribers), it’s in “very good shape” and the team is hitting its milestones. It seems that the game is on schedule which is noted to be “about 18 months out from today.”

As such, Grubb expects it to release by late 2023 at the earliest. A slip into 2024 is certainly possible especially if any problems come up along the way (or if the developer simply wants more time for polish). We know that BioWare is “excited” for 2022 so it’s possible that we could see some new gameplay later this year.

Dragon Age 4 doesn’t have any officially confirmed platforms though rumors claim that it won’t be a cross-gen title. Following the problems with Anthem and the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order for EA, it’s going to be a single-player RPG instead of live-service. Stay turned for more details and updates in the coming months.

Though it made an appearance at The Game Awards 202, BioWare's big fantasy RPG looks to be skipping this year's show.

BioWare’s Dragon Age 4 – or whatever the next Dragon Age ends up being called – seemed like a shoe-in to appear at The Game Awards 2021 (especially since it appeared in 2018 and 2020). However, that no longer seems to be the case. In a post celebrating Dragon Age Day 2021, the development team said it’s still “hard at work on building the next single-player focused experience for Dragon Age.”

“We’re excited for next year when we can talk more about what we’re working on.” This seeming indicates that the next big reveal won’t be happening at The Game Awards after all. The franchise’s senior creative director Matt Goldman recently left and given that the pandemic is still causing delays so it’s not that surprising overall. It does make you wonder if it’s still on track for release in 2023, as rumors in July indicated.

Platforms for Dragon Age 4 haven’t been officially announced though it’s apparently going to be a current-gen release only. Thus far, we know that Solas, the Dread Wolf, appears and that Tevinter will be the main setting. Stay tuned for more official details next year. As for The Game Awards, it kicks off on December 9th at 4:30 PT with a pre-show; the main show begins at 5 PM PT.

Another high profile Dragon Age lead leaves BioWare, though the developer insists it is committed to "a high-quality Dragon Age game."

Dragon Age 4 remains one of the biggest question marks when you look at major upcoming games that are currently in development, and its development seems to have hit another obstacle. As revealed in a report by Kotaku, the senior creative director of the franchise, Matt Goldman – who was occupying the same role for its next entry – has left BioWare. Goldman had been leading development on the game since its reported reboot in 2017.

In an email sent by BioWare to its staff, the developer revealed that Goldman has left the studio, with the two parties “mutually agreeing to part ways”, although there’s no mention of what brought about this departure. Goldman first joined BioWare in 1998. In his first stint at the studio, which lasted over seven years, he worked on Baldur’s Gate and Jade Empire. He rejoined in 2009, following which he worked on every game in the Dragon Age series, and was also involved in the development of Mass Effect: Andromeda.

In the aforementioned email, BioWare GM Gary McKay admitted that Goldman’s departure could have an impact on the game’s development, but insisted that it remains committed to delivering a quality experience. The email reads: “We understand that Matt’s departure has an impact on you, as well as the game’s development. Rest assured our commitment to a high-quality Dragon Age game has not waivered, and we will not ship a game that is not up to BioWare’s standards.

“We, including EA’s executive team, have absolute confidence in the leadership here at the studio and the people working on this game to carry forward our vision.”

Meanwhile, an EA representative also confirmed Goldman’s departure in a statement provided to Kotaku, saying: “Matt Goldman is no longer working at BioWare. He leaves the next Dragon Age game in excellent hands, with the team here at the studio who will carry forward our vision for the game.”

Goldman is far from the only high profile development lead to have left the Dragon Age team in the last couple of years. In 2019, lead producer Fernando Melo left BioWare, while in late 2020, the Dragon Age series’ executive producer Mark Darrah left the studio as well.

Details on Dragon Age 4 have been scant, even though it’s now been three years since the game was officially confirmed to be in development. Earlier this year, Christian Dailey, studio head at BioWare Austin, said that the game’s development was “making great progress”, and reports have said since then that the game is on track for a 2023 launch. It’s also been reported that the RPG will not be a cross-gen release, instead releasing only for PC and new-gen consoles.

Though we're still yet to see gameplay footage from BioWare's upcoming action RPG, there is at least new artwork to look at.

Dragon Age 4 has been confirmed to be in development for a while now, but in all that time, we haven’t really seen anything from the game at all, and details from BioWare or EA have been rather scant. That said, BioWare’s Christian Dailey – studio head at BioWare Austin and executive producer on Dragon Age 4 – has been sharing new concept art from the game every now and then, and recently, had some more of it to show off.

Dailey recently took to Twitter and, after wishing everyone a happy Halloween, shared some new (and appropriately spooky) concept art from the next Dragon Age game. His message was brief, as you’d expect, and didn’t say much about the game, other than “all is well.”

That said, some details on Dragon Age 4 have been made known over the months. The Tevinter Imperium has been confirmed as the game’s setting, while reports have also suggested that following a mid-production change of heart, BioWare dropped plans for multiplayer and switched the project to be an exclusively single player RPG. Read more on that through here.

In a message shared in July, Dailey said that Dragon Age 4’s development was “making great progress”. Shortly afterward, reports claimed that the game was on track for a 2023 launch. It also seems like it won’t be a cross-gen release, and will be launching only for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

The LinkedIn profile of former BioWare developer Daniel Nordlander suggests that the upcoming RPG will only release for PC and new-gen consoles.

As is the case with most console generation transitions, most (if not all) major games coming out right now are cross-gen releases. As we get deeper and deeper into the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S’ lives though, support for PS4 and Xbox One is going to keep fading away, and most major games coming out by 2023 and beyond will likely launch for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S only.

Reports have claimed that 2023 is the year that BioWare and EA are targeting for Dragon Age 4’s launch, and sure enough, it doesn’t look like the RPG is going to come to old-gen consoles. As spotted by @FaizShaikh7681 on Twitter, according to the LinkedIn profile of Daniel Nordlander – who was Lead Player Designer on the game for a year until he left BioWare in October 2020 – the next Dragon Age will launch only for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. In a report published on GamesBeat, journalist Jeff Grubb corroborates this based on his own sources.

There’s still plenty we don’t know about Dragon Age 4 yet- heck, we haven’t even seen a single second of gameplay. That said, reports earlier this year claimed that BioWare had dropped initial multiplayer plans to focus entirely on single player. Meanwhile, we also know that the game will be set in the Tevinter Imperium.

Sources speaking to GamesBeat's Jeff Grubb says that everything is on the table for the sequel, including a move to Unreal Engine.

BioWare’s next Mass Effect, which was announced at The Game Awards 2020, could see the developer opting for Unreal Engine over EA’s Frostbite engine. A listing for technical director on the Mass Effect franchise mentioned “experience with Unreal Engine [or higher]” and GamesBeat’s Jeff Grubb spoke to various sources that said everything was on the table for the next Mass Effect. The reasons for this are pretty wide-ranging, starting with BioWare’s experience developing the first three games on Unreal Engine.

Issues that emerged with Frostbite in Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem could also have motivated the studio to look elsewhere. Of course, the game’s release date is also a factor. Dragon Age 4 is currently slated to release in 2023 as per Grubb’s sources, leading him to believe that the next Mass Effect would arrive in 2025. Unreal Engine 5 would look substantially better than Frostbite by that point.

Regardless, BioWare is looking into various cutting-edge features that could be used in the next Mass Effect and wants to have technical parity with the industry, even if it ultimately goes with Frostbite. The title’s platforms and official name have yet to be revealed so there’s a ways to go yet. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
