Gears of War 3, which topped the Xbox 360 charts last week, has slipped down to the second spot, since FIFA 12 has launched worldwide. And when FIFA launches, everything else takes a backseat in UK. FIFA 12, which topped the all-formats charts and has become the third biggest UK video game launch ever, has debuted on the Xbox 360 charts at the top spot too.

F1 2011, Dead Island and Deus Ex: Human Revolution come in at 3, 4 and 5, and oldies like Driver: San Francisco and Rugby World Cup 2011 at the next two positions. Call of Duty: Black Ops has also managed to remain in the top 10, featuring at the 8th position. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood has also resurfaced at the 9th spot.

Warhammer 40: Space Marine rounds off the top 10 at the 10th spot.

Gears of War 3 has made a pretty strong debut in terms of sales, topping the all formats and Xbox 360 charts in UK and selling 3 million units in its first week worldwide, and even managing to sell strongly in Japan. It was even the biggest launch of 2011 in UK. And now, it has performed strongly on the Xbox Live Activity Charts as well.

Held off only by Call of Duty: Black Ops, Gears of War 3 debuted at the 2nd spot, followed by Modern Warfare 2, Halo: Reach, FIFA 11 and more. Here’s the full list:

Gears of War 3 has made a very strong debut indeed. Not only did it top the UK all-formats charts, it is also the biggest 2011 launch in UK, and topped GAME’s charts as well. And now, it has, quite predictably, topped Xbox 360’s UK charts too.

Coming in close behind was F1 2011, which made a pretty strong debut. Dead Island was the third highest selling game, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution was at #4.

Driver: San Francisco came in at the 5th spot, with Warhammer 40: Space Marine and Rugby World Cup 2011 coming in next at 6 and 7 respectively.

Oldies like Call of Duty: Black Ops and L.A. Noire also resurfaced, cracking the 8th and 10th positions. Rise of Nightmares at 9 rounded off the top 10.

We recently reported that Gears of War 3 topped the UK sales charts this week, beating the likes of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Dead Island in doing so. Well, it turns out that’s not all.

Gears of War 3 got the biggest launch in UK for the year of 2011 (so far), seventh biggest Xbox launch in UK to date and twelfth across all platforms and all time.

In the week ending September 24, with just 4 days on the shelves under its belt, Gears 3 managed to sell nearly as much as Gears of War and Gears of War 2 did combined. Gears of War 3 was also the fastest pre-selling Xbox exclusive of all time.

To mark one of the biggest games of the year, Gears of Wars 3, 258 GAME and 170 gamestation stores across the UK will be opening their doors on midnight on 20^th September, giving Gears of War fanatics the chance to buy the game first and get playing hours ahead of everyone else.

GAME’s flagship store on Oxford Street will be hosting the official UK midnight launch, where gamers will be treated to exclusive meet and greets with Gears of War veteran: Carlos Ferro (voice of the super-badass Dom Santiago).

Limited edition Gears of War 3 posters signed by the game’s developers, Gears of War t-shirts alongside other fantastic gaming goodies and Gears of War memorabilia will also be given to fans on a first come first served basis. Customers will also have the a chance to win one of five Samsung 40” D5520 Smart LED TVs that will be given away on the night.

Neil Ashurst, head of UK PR at GAME said: “With over 400 stores opening at midnight to celebrate the launch of Gears of Wars 3, we’re ‘gearing’ up for what is set to be one of our most explosive nights of gaming yet. Gears of Wars has proven to be a blockbuster series for fans and we’re excited to be giving them the earliest chance to pick up a copy.’’

Epic Games boss Mike Capps believes Gears of War 3 looks really good in 3D, despite it being a last decision to add the feature in the game, but the tech has “room for improvement” on the Xbox 360.

“”I think 3D was the very last thing we did,” Capps told CVG. “We’ve been playing with it for a long time and it added a lot of complexity and testing time. We didn’t think we’d make it, which was part of the reason we made a late announcement. But we got it working and we think it looks pretty good.

“I think there’s room for improvement in what the console supports in terms of 3D, but for folks who are looking for a stereo experience I think it’s really good.”

“The first thing we do is always pay attention to forums and Twitter and social networking, that’s a good temperature check,” Cliff Bleszinski told GameSpot in a Q&A session.

“The second thing we use is metrics; we’ve found sometimes there’s a difference between what people are saying in the forums, and what’s actually going on in the wild,” he said, quoting the example of the sawed-off shotgun, which people thought was pretty good, but was kind of useless statistically.

“Then the final thing we use is our gut. If we can’t trust that we might as well pack it in.” He then quoted some examples from some games, and how people did not want something in a game that they “did not sign up for.”

“In Dead Space, [there] was that asteroid sequence. I signed up to kill Necromorphs and be scared, I didn’t sign up to play Asteroids.

“The same thing applied to Gears 2 with the damn tank on the lake. Most Gears fans signed up to hear the story of Marcus, Dom, Cole, Locust, and chainsawing and cool weapons, and awesome set-pieces. They didn’t sign up to drive a tank over slippery ice that breaks. That’s one of the very important lessons we learned.”

Blezsinski said that while Gears 3’s story has a personal touch to it, he could never go into something as personal as relationships.

“I’ve had my share of ups and downs, and good and bad relationships, but I don’t think I could ever pull off a game like Catherine,” he said. “I applaud them for going in that direction. Catherine is the first game to touch on themes of stress, infidelity, and uncertainty in a relationship since Silent Hill 2, and that’s an area I wouldn’t even want to touch, because they’re tricky.”

Gears of War 3 releases in 15 days, on September 20, for the Xbox 360 exclusively.

It was already announced that Gears of War 3 is the ‘fastest ever pre-selling Xbox exclusive’, with  1.3 million pre-orders for the game having been made already. Well, it sure seems to be selling well, because pre-order for the Limited Edition of the game on Amazon had sold out as well.

The Limited Edtion, costing $79.99, comes with a copy of the game itself, an Octus Service Medal, Adam Fenix multiplayer character and Fenix Family Mementos & Fabric COG Flag.

A Season Pass for the game was announced yesterday. Season Pass holders will get the first four DLCs of the game at a discounted price for 33%, and an in-game weapon free.

Game releases on September 20.

Microsoft has announced a $30 “Season Pass” for the upcoming Gears of War 3, which will include a heavily discounted rate for all upcoming DLCs of the game. Those who have the pass will be able to get the first four DLCs of Gears 3 “over the course of the next year,” with the first one coming out in November.

Season Pass holders will get a 33% discount on those four DLC packs.

You will also get an “exclusive Liquid Metal Weapon Set” for free.

The Season Pass will be available for purchase starting September 20, the same day the game releases. It will cost you 2400 Microsoft Points.
