Producer Kosuke Okatani acknowledges the comparisons, but "having the things you shoot stay on the field is very unique.”

Square Enix’s Foamstars has received a release date, launching on February 6th for PS4 and PS5. However, since its announcement, the 4v4 party shooter has been compared to Nintendo’s Splatoon, with players spraying foam in arenas and using it to traverse instead of ink.

Producer Kosuke Okatani is aware of the same, and when asked by VGC if he was tired of all the comparisons, he laughingly responded, “First of all, yes. There have been many comparisons on the internet, but also, we saw on social media that the people who actually played it saw that it’s a completely different game, and I hope you also agree.”

While Okatani feels that the “mechanic of having the things you shoot stay on the field is very unique,” he also jokingly said that a genre name akin to Soulsborne or Metroidvania would be “a great honor.”

Along with PS4 and PS5, Foamstars will be available on PlayStation Plus from February 6th to March 4th. All subscriber tiers can thus claim it for free. It offers three modes – Smash the Star, Happy Bath Survival and Rubber Duck Party – with multiple characters having unique abilities. You can unlock cosmetics for them, ranging from new skins to emotes and dances. Stay tuned for more details en route to the game’s launch.

Some of the most tragic stories in games linger outside the spotlight.

While video games often have their own main narrative with the player character in the spotlight, there can be various stories in the background as well. Some of this manifests in the form of lore while others can be discovered by delving into another character’s past. In several cases, however, many of these stories end up being extremely heavy. Let’s take a look at 15 of the saddest background stories in video games. Spoilers ahead so be warned.

Lisa – P.T.

Throughout the various loops that the player travels in P.T., it’s revealed that the monstrous Lisa was killed by her husband. Along with having her eye gouged out, she’s injured around her stomach as well. A radio report would reveal that her husband shot Lisa while she was pregnant (with the crying fetus alluding to her child not surviving). How this all tied into Silent Hills – along with why Lisa is trapped with the player in the loop – is unknown but her backstory has attained a sad legacy of its own.

The version 8.0.0 update is also live and adds Spirit Battle rematches.

The latest DLC fighter for Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is now live with ARMS’ Min Min. She’s purchasable standalone or with Fighters Pass Vol. 2 which costs $29.99 and includes an additional five DLC fighters for the future. Update version 8.0.0 is also available and brings fighter balance changes along with the ability to have Spirit Battle rematches.

Min Min is a mid-range fighter with some interesting moves in her kit. She can attack left and right simultaneously, change ARMS for either heavy hits or firing lasers, and can jump higher depending on how long her jump is charged. Her Final Smash is also quite the spectacle as it sees the entire ARMS cast joining in for a beatdown on foes.

Additional Spirits can also be found in the shop with this update. You’ll find Master Mummy, Byte and Barq, Kid Cobra, Helix, Max Brass and many more to acquire in the Vault. New Mii Fighter costumes, particularly Heihachi from Tekken, Ninjara from ARMS, Marie and Callie from Splatoon and Vault Boy from Fallout, have also been added. Check out the general patch notes below and more details on fighter balance changes here.

Offline

You can now have a spirit battle rematch at any time via Spirits → Collection → Inventory → Spirit List → Fight. The score will also be recorded.

The following spirits will appear in the Shop on the Vault menu:

Master Mummy

Mechanica

Byte & Barq

Kid Cobra

Helix

Max Brass

General

The following downloadable content will be usable after purchase:

Min Min Challenger Pack

Ninjara Wig + Outfit

Callie Wig + Outfit

Marie Wig + Outfit

Vault Boy Mask + Vault 111 Jumpsuit

Heihachi Wig + Outfit

Note: You cannot make videos of replays that contain DLC you have not purchased (fighters, stages, music, Mii Fighter costumes, etc.).

Game balance adjustments have been made. Please see the official website for details of fixes and changes to fighters.

Several issues have been fixed to improve gameplay experience.

Other upcoming Mii costumes include ARMS' Ninjara, Tekken's Heihachi, and more.

Along with confirming Min Min from ARMS as the next DLC fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, producer Masahiro Sakurai also revealed the next round of Mii Fighter costumes. This includes Ninjara from ARMS, Heihachi from Tekken and Callie and Marie from Splatoon. Check them out in action below.

However, perhaps the most surprising addition is Vault Boy from Fallout. As a Mii Gunner, the costume sports a ray gun as its main weapon. Does this generate hope for Skyrim’s Dragonborn to be added as a Mii costume some day? Time will tell. In the meantime, you can pick up all of the above Mii costumes for $0.75 each on June 29th.

Sakurai also revealed a very interesting way that Mii costumes can tie into one’s experience. If you face a fighter with a Spirit that matches an owned Mii costume, then that fighter’s appearance will change to match the costume. For example, facing Mega Man with Cuphead as his Spirit will change the appearance to Cuphead, so it will feel more like fighting the actual character. Stay tuned for more details on other features when the next update goes live.

Could Nintendo be hinting at something Splatoon-related this year?

Though series producer Hisashi Nogami was pretty adamant about Splatoon 3 not being in development, something seems to be going on with the series. In a new tweet, the official Japan account for Splatoon wished fans a happy 2020. However, the letters “SOS” are seen in the water.

Morse code for “Save Our Souls” and originally used for maritime matters, the SOS here could be hinting at something. Of course, it could be nothing at all as well. And even if the development team does have a tease in the works, it’s hard to see it being a sequel to Splatoon. An expansion to Splatoon 2, perhaps, but a full-fledged sequel?

It would be interesting to see what the project is. After all, major content updates and events have ceased for Splatoon 2 and it’s receiving weapon and balance changes only. The next patch, version 5.1.0, is set to arrive next week and will tune weapons like the Splattershot and Luna Blaster. We’ll hopefully see if there’s any significance to this tweet in the coming months.

Currently in its tenth season, Fornite is still going strong, and one of the things that has helped the game keep players coming back is its crossover events with various properties. The battle royale shooter is currently in the middle of a crossover with Borderlands, but soon, it might be gearing up for something a little more unique.

Prominent Fortnite leaker Hypex has been doing some digging in the game’s files, and he seems to have found something very interesting- files in the game that mention “SquidKid”, which would suggest that some sort of a crossover with Nintendo’s wacky shooter series Splatoon might be in the pipeline. There’s a Splatoon skin and a new Black Bling in the game’s files as well, apparently.

If this does indeed end up happening, it will be interesting on multiple levels. For starters, Splatoon is a Nintendo-exclusive property, so it would be interesting to see if this hypothetical crossover content appears in Fortnite on all systems, or if it’ll just be a Switch thing.

On top of that, it’s not like Splatoon has any major content coming up any time soon, which makes this possible crossover a little curious. All previous Fortnite crossovers – from John Wick and Stranger Things to Avengers and even the currently ongoing Borderlands – came right before major releases for the properties in question.

Before (and if) we get to Splatoon though, it seems there’s another crossover coming up for Fortnite soon. The game has been teasing an appearance from a certain gutter-dwelling, balloon-loving clown, and what do you know- It: Chapter 2 is almost upon us.

Series producer Hisashi Nogami is unsure of what the future holds for Splatoon.

Splatoon might be one of the newest properties in Nintendo’s vast catalog of IP, but you wouldn’t know that by hoe popular it is. Both Splatoon and Splatoon 2 received plenty of critical acclaim, sold impressive figures, and caught the fancy of millions of gamers. But with support for Splatoon 2 winding down, people are beginning to wonder if Nintendo is gearing up for the next game in the series.

Sadly, Splatoon 3 is not currently in development, so we’re going to have a wait a while before we get to see more from the series. This was confirmed by Hisashi Nogami while speaking with Weekly Famitsu (via Japanese Nintendo), who also said that the development team hasn’t thought about the future of the series yet. He did, however, say that they would “like to return the favour” to everyone who’s been supporting the series- take from that what you will.

Either way, seeing how successful Splatoon has been – Splatoon 2 is the highest selling Switch game in Japan to date, after all – it goes without saying that Splatoon 3 will eventually happen. With the development team currently being busy with Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it makes sense that they’re not working on the former just yet- but it should only be a matter of time (hopefully).

Sink or swim.

We have a weird fascination with water in video games. From obsessing over water graphics to our unifying dislike for water levels, water, for some reason or the other, ends up figuring into a lot of our conversations. Similarly, whenever we see a body of water in a video game, some instinct inside of us just kicks in, and we can’t help but take a dive to see what happens- will we sink, or swim?

Often, it’s the former. Being able to swim in video games, strangely enough, isn’t something that happens a lot. In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at fifteen unfortunate characters in games who’re terrible swimmers.

JOHN MARSTON (RED DEAD REDEMPTION)

The good old wild west isn’t a place where swimming is a life skill that you absolutely need to have- and John Marston takes that to heart. Put him in any body of water for even a second, and he’ll sink faster than a ton of bricks. The series is well aware of this, and takes every opportunity to poke fun at the outlaw’s inability to swim in Red Dead Redemption 2.

PlayerUnknown's Splattergrounds, let's go.

With Splatoon officially having joined the ranks of successful Nintendo franchises, it looks like Nintendo is willing to now take more risks with it after the almost disappointingly (initially, at any rate) safe sequel that was Splatoon 2– apparently, a Splatoon 2 announcement is lined up for June 9, which will “shock the world”.

With no details to go on just yet, we can try and speculate on what this announcement might be- a Splatoon port to 3DS? A mobile Splatoon game? A Switch port of the original Splatoon? Splatoon: Battle Royale? Okay, I really want that last one to happen, it would work so great. Except for the part where all the ink will instantly give your position away. But still!

We don’t know what the news is just yet, but as soon as we find out, we will be sure to let you know. Till then, stay fresh and stay off the hook in Splatoon 2, available now exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.

Started at 9 PM PT, August 4th and lasting for 24 hours.

Nintendo’s Splatoon 2 has received its newest Splatfest event, which began on August 4th, 9 PM PT in the United States and will start at 3 PM BST on August 5th in the UK. The event will run for 24 hours and much like the last event in the World Premiere Demo, it’s all about food. A new map will be featured in the form of Shifty Station.

This time around, the game simply asks: Mayonnaise or Ketchup? Pledge to either condiment at the Inkopolis Square voting booth and get to work in Turf War. The wins gained in Turf War will go towards your faction’s score. Once the event ends, players will receive rewards based on their ending rank and receive some Super Sea Snails. These are rare items for adding more slots to one’s gear.

Sadly, the new map will only be available be in rotation for Splatfest. That being said, the layout can change by the next Splatfest event. You’ll also be able to use a weapon from the first Splatoon, the Sploosh-O-Match which has short range but high damage. In sub-weapon form, it’s the Curling Bomb while its special attack is called Splashdown.
