The Outer Worlds Developers Are “Pretty Happy” With Fallout: New Vegas Comparisons

"It’s hard to get away from it because this IP is a brand new IP and it is created by the same people who created Fallout," says senior narrative designer Megan Starks.

The Outer Worlds is a game that a great many people are looking forward to, not just because of Obsidian Entertainment’s storytelling chops and how they handle choice and consequence mechanics – which are promising to be typically spectacular in the upcoming RPG – but also because it’s looking a great deal like what’s considered the best modern day Fallout game by many- New Vegas, which was, coincidentally, also developed by Obsidian.

In fact, comparisons between The Outer Worlds and Fallout: New Vegas have been a dime a dozen, with many pointing out the cues the former seems to be taking from the latter, from its combat to its humour to so much else. But how does Obsidian itself feel about those comparisons? Pretty good, actually.

Speaking in an interview with Wccftech, senior narrative designer Megan Starks said in response to being asked about the same that the team working on The Outer Worlds is happy with the comparisons. In fact, it sees them as unavoidable, owing to several factors, such as the similarities between the games, the fact that they both have been developed by Obsidian, and the fact that several members of The Outer Worlds’ development team also worked on Fallout: New Vegas.

“I think the team is pretty happy with that comparison,” Starks said. “It’s hard to get away from it because this IP is a brand new IP and it is created by the same people who created Fallout. And then also the studio is known for making Fallout New Vegas and a lot of the team who made Fallout New Vegas have been working on The Outer Worlds. And then on top of that, you have developers like me, who are just fans of that game. So yeah, I think we’re trying to do a classic Obsidian style RPG, single player, with a really rich story and choice driven. And then we bring that dark, quirky sense of humor to it.”

The Outer Worlds launches on October 25 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and will also be joining the Xbox Game Pass catalog on the day of launch itself. In the meantime, be sure to check out over 20 minutes of gameplay footage through here.
