As far back as I can remember, games have always continually pushed forward toward graphical realism. Anything less than photo-realism is often seen as a failing nowadays, but I find I get enough realism from my day to day life. I want something different when I’ve got a controller in my hand, and nothing spells vivid worlds more than a colourful art style. Here are ten games with an awesome use of the colour palette for those who are also bored of the usual shades of green and brown.

Beautiful Katamari

There is always so much going on at any one time in the world of Katamari. The sphere rolling simulation series has always had a distinctive and flashy look, but Beautiful Katamari was the first time we got a taste of the series in HD. It was love at first sight.

  • I was going to revolt when I didn’t see Katamari Damacy on here..until I saw him on the last page. Mirror’s Edge definitely belongs. Despite it being very ‘sterile’ with the white’s and red’s and blue’s…some areas were full of vibrant yellows and green’s that just left my mouth gaping, until I got pistol whipped and tazored and shot at a few times, I suddenly remembered I was playing a game.

  • This was actually a pretty great list. The only thing I would complain about this is that El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron isn’t on there. Have you seen that game? It is absolutely gorgeous and one of the most colorful games I have EVER played.
