Not all games show their entire hand right off the bat. The majority of well remembered titles stay in the minds of gamers on account of a particular twist or surprise; an ace up their sleeve if you will. Whether it’s a level you never expected or a really crazy plot twist, here are ten shocking surprises in games that have kept us on our toes. This list is likely to contain spoilers.

Characters have been dying in games for ages now, but the main protagonist of a game always seems to have an elevated sense of safety. After all, a developer can't kill off the avatar that the player is inhabiting, right? Wrong. Squaresoft threw us all a curved ball in 1995's legendary Chrono Trigger by killing the main protagonist off later on in the game. You are able to revive him of course, but the shock still remains. No one ever expects the main character to be the victim.
