When Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 smashed records on it’s release 2 weeks ago, it took it over $500 million in just 5 days. This took the game sliding past previous records for both books and film. Obviously, this gave Activision one heck of a soundbite, “The biggest entertainment launch in history”.
Activision are swimming in a pool of money!
After a little time spent counting their money, Activision stated that the Call of Duty franchise has pulled in over $3 billion since the first game came out in 2003. However, it has been the last 3 games that have really turned Call of Duty from a great shooter to a truly incredible one. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare sold 14 million units, and it’s successor, World at War, did well too, selling 11 million units.
Although Activision has yet to release an official statement of the total number of copies of Modern Warfare 2 sold, it did say that 4.7 million units were sold in the first 24 hours after release alone. This brought the company in a cool $310 million.
Its no doubt that the next game will be huge as well!

We also reported a few days ago that MW 2 sold better on the 360 than on the PS3. After Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sold closer to 5 million copies on the launch day it self, it not only broke records, but it sold more on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 compared to the PlayStation 3. According to Dennis Durkin of Interactive Entertainment Business, the Xbox 360 version of the record breaking game has sold more than the double of what has been sold on the PlayStation 3.
So how’s that for one franchise?
