Lionhead studio’s lead programmer, Ben Sugden has uploaded a tech demo which he showed off at GDC 2011 on Youtube and it looks amazing.

Titled, “Mega Meshes – Modelling, rendering and lighting a world made of 100 billion polygons”, the video shows off a new tech that the studio’s developed for the Xbox 360.

Here’s the word from the dev himself:

“The video shows the results of the mega texturing technology I developed.
The frame rate is really sucky in this capture, I have no idea why. The rendering engine runs at 30hz, but you’ll have to take my word for that!”

He also uploaded another video which shows of some amazing lightning effects, watch it below:

Looks pretty amazing, but I’ve got to admit, after seeing the Frostbite 3 Engine, I feel spoiled to the point that I don’t think this all that incredible.

    Still very stunning.

  • All that scenery reminds me of Milo Demo they showed for Kinect. The only thing i didn’t like, because it’s outdated are the bushes, trees and some herbs, they’re all 2D sprites.

look good, i like it (:

  • Eh. It just looks like a high res wii demo to me. Show me TRUE dynamic-realtime shadows on every object and realtime-realistic lighting from multiple sources and give those detailed geometry and not just rely on bump mapping (even tho you didn’t bother to use bump mapping here) and i would be impressed.

It’s amazing what Microsoft has accomplish on old technologies.

  • Hehehe Directx 10 tech demo was more Amezing 2years ago

Reminds me of the potential that the Xbox 360 has or my preference for well lighted shiny stuff.

  • Um what exactly is so impressive about this, it’s just a small static area with nothing going on and some good parallax mapping. the actual polygon count isn’t isn’t that impressive given that they are counting the total ply count of the entire scene they got there. The lighting on thee other hand was pretty cool and i’d love to see that implemented in real time in more games, but still it’s nothing new

This is sum pretty sweet tech. It is amazing how they r squeezing evry drop from the 360. That’s is y I am in no hurry 4 the next gen of consoles.

call me bias but I’m not impressed. Xbox has yet to wow me.

  • It’s beautiful, but mostly because it’s glowing everywhere. Still nowhere near the very pretty games on both the PC and PS3.
