GameStop has started selling ‘supercharged’ PlayStation 4 consoles that come with 2 TB of on board storage, as part of their ‘Premium Refurbished’ consoles range. They cost $480, and while they are not new, I guess for the average customer, the prospect of not having to eventually switch the hard drive might be enough to make them splurge.

To be clear, this is not one of the 1TB consoles that Sony is officially selling in Europe as the ‘Ultimate Edition’ systems- this is just a GameStop refurb. We don’t quite know the brand of the hard drive being used here (so we can only hope it’s not Seagate), but I mean, like I said, for those of you who freak out at having to install a new hard drive in your PS4 yourself, this is as good an option as any.

Or you could save yourself a lot of money by just buying a hard drive for less than $100 yourself, and then spending less than a half hour in installing it. Just a thought.

You can get a 2TB Samsung laptop HDD right now from newegg for under $110. A NEW PS4 is under $400 so if this $480 you’re only saving about $30 from doing it yourself with NEW hardware and you’re missing the 500GB HDD that they took out of the system. Heck GameStop sell refurb 500GB PS4’s for $360 so it would be $10 cheaper just to buy that and add the 2TB HDD yourself (and you’d still have an extra 500GB HDD left over). This is a bad deal unless you REALLY, REALLY, don’t want to swap the HDD yourself.

You can get a PS4 used on Facebook for an easy $250. I was going to say… if the only difference is the drive, that’s not really a selling point. Most people are skilled enough to swap the drive.

I have a 3.5 seagate hybrid hard drive and I have had no problems with it for 2 years except for the desktop power I first used burnt out. Luckily I keep all my old computer parts so it as a easy fix. Holding out on the data bank for a little while to make sure there aren’t problems or recalls.
