Team Ico Director Slams His Previous Work And Wants To Make An FPS

Fumito Ueda, Team Ico’s creative director, has claimed that the previous two games that he directed and designed, the critically adored Ico and equally beloved Shadow Of The Colossus, were financially unsuccessful because “they weren’t good enough. They didn’t have enough to appeal to users.” This followed a question from EDGE magazine asking if Ueda was bothered by the fact that the constant cries from gamers for originality are not reflected in sales figures. Ueda continued “The Last Guardian wants to learn from this. I’m making the game so that it’s appealing, with the hope that many people will give it a try and love it.”

In the same interview Ueda was asked about future design ambitions, to which he responded: “I’d like to make 2D games. Right now, that’s what I’d like to do – it may change tomorrow. Oh, and an FPS. Yes, I’d like to make an FPS. I play quite a lot of FPS games in my free time.”

I personally Loved Shadow of the Colossus and thought it was the one of the best games on the PS2, I never did get a chance to play ICO. That being said I think if Ueda were to make a FPS it would be a game changer. There is something different about the way Ueda builds a game, its epic without being to showy and “Michael Bay”. I think he would make an awesome horror/thriller FPS.

It saddens me that he feels this way. Those r 2 of my all time fav games. Ico was a revelation when it debuted. Will buy the Shadow/Ico collection as soon as it releases. Although I am curious 2 c what he would do w/ a fps, I hope he doesn’t sacrifice his creativity.
