9. Braid: Normal Ending
Braid was very much the darling of the indie circuit back when it launched in 2008 and, though the text incursions between each level are a little on the contrived side, the ending sequence is a piece of narrative genius. I stress the normal ending though, the one that used the game's clever time mechanics to tip the “save the princess” narrative structure totally on its head. The true ending blows this bubble, instead unveiling the game's supposed use as an allegory for the development of the atomic bomb. I'll take the narrative interest over the pretentious metaphor thanks.
