Too Much Hype:

Often games get announced well before their release, and unfortunately they can easily be hyped into the ground by the marketing team and the community. While they cannot really control how much the community supports, the marketing of a game can easily make or break a title. Games like the Star Wars the Old Republic suffered from this. Everyone was already expecting it to be the “WoW killer.”

When things don’t quite work out that way, people tend to get upset or have an overblown reaction. This can utterly destroy a game’s chances for any long term success. A game that may fall prey to the hype machine in the near future is Elder Scrolls Online. While it looks good, people have some incredibly high expectations of it.
