Giygas – Earthbound
For a game that takes a sharp left turn off a cliff in terms of tone, look no further than Earthbound. Like having moments of 2 girls 1 cup spliced into an episode of Loony Tunes, The cult classic Super Nintendo RPG spends a lot of its time in happy, wacky, brightly coloured fun before hitting you with some hardcore, disturbing reality, and moving on like it never really happened. At least until the final battle with Giygas. The warped, demented form of terror isn’t even fully aware of himself, muttering disturbing phrases like “It hurts, Ness…” and “I feel g…o…o…d…”. The fight against the being, so powerful that his abilities have shattered his own sense of mind and being, is so unbalanced that the player can’t even comprehend the true form of the attack. The lovecraftian abomination that ends a fun game about children hitting crows with baseball bats is only brought down by the wishes of the characters, and the player themselves.
