BLACK AND WHITE CHOICES
Thankfully, this is something that is becoming less common as time passes and games continue to develop a more mature understanding of meaningful player choice, but for the longest time, choice in a vast majority of games boiled down to- “do you want to be a good guy or do you want to be a bad guy?” And sure, it’s not like that is completely without its merits, and for what it is, it can work well enough. But these painfully obvious black and white, right and wrong choices are, ultimately, not very engaging. They are not engaging because in those cases, you are not actually invested in the narrative reasons behind why you are making those choices. You are not being faced with actual decisions- you might as well be just flipping a coin. When inFamous 2 basically tells you to choose between being the worst guy in the world and being the saviour of an entire city, that’s not really much of a moral dilemma, is it?
