Penny’s Big Breakaway
Penny’s Big Breakaway is the debut outing from Evening Star, a studio co-founded by Christian Whitehead who – if you weren’t aware – served as lead developer on Sonic Mania. One glance at Penny’s freewheeling platforming reveals Sonic’s DNA, but the ace up the sleeve here is the innovative traversal centring on Penny’s living yo-yo. With it she can swing, glide, ride, and soar across beautifully crisp, fluorescent levels. The yo-yo is simple to learn but can be mastered by chaining manoeuvres together that preserve momentum, and once you reach this stage breezing through Penny’s Big Breakaway feels fantastic. Easily one of 2024’s best 3D platformers.
