Long distanced checkpoints
When players really get into a game it tends to consume them. They just barrel forward, taking down every enemy, solving every puzzle, and leaping over every gap. But death or failure could mean being transported to a save state that forces you to repeat a sizable chunk of the game. Spacing checkpoints out like this just makes it more difficult for the player to actually make it to the end of the game.
