5 Reasons Why The Battlefield 3 VS. Modern Warfare 3 Argument Makes Zero Sense

Other competing titles

Who cares if it isn't set in the modern day. Gears of War 3 is still set to make a splash when it launches later this year

Whilst the battle between the two big modern day shooters set to be released this year is bound to emerge, it is very reductionist in light of the wider spectrum of shooters available. Within the final quarter of 2011 there are a plethora of great shooters coming out, even not counting BF3 and MW3. Uncharted 3, Gears of War 3, Halo: Combat Evolved HD, RAGE etc. There is a lot to look forward to outside of Battlefield and Call of Duty, and any one of these games can compete with these two franchises in terms of quality. The BF vs. MW debate is spawned out of little more than a common genre, so let’s just leave it at that and look forward to an awesome last quarter of 2011.

Completely different focuses

The games are entirely focused on different aspects. Just let them both do their own thing

I don’t even understand why people are trying to compare the two games in the first place. The two series, in their entirety, are focused on different things. Call of Duty has always gone for an engaging and cinematic single player mode, with Battlefield seeking a more technical slant for its campaigns (what few of them there have been so far.) Battlefield attempts to create big maps and battles with vehicles, squads and planes overhead. CoD is a much more intimate and classic FPS experience, focusing on the skill and tactics of small cells of players. Call of Duty classes are left open ended and entirely customisable, whereas Battlefield tends to offer less customisation with the pay off of the classes all having very distinct properties and functions within the team dynamic. Battlefield is focusing on the destructible environments provided by its frostbite engine, whilst CoD continues to perpetuate the bullet penetration that occurs when shooting various parts of its environment.

In summary, the two games are set to offer two very different and separate experiences. The two excel and fall short in different areas, but they are equal when it comes to the entire package. Why bicker so much about a good thing. The competition between the developers will create some of the best FPS games yet, so let’s leave the debates to them and just enjoy the ride.
