38. SimCity Announcement of Always Online
There are different ways to deal with piracy, but using an always online DRM is a sure way to really tee off fans in the wrong way. That’s exactly what Maxis did as soon as they announced the always-online DRM for SimCity. It incurred severe backlash from the gaming community. Ironically the very same always-online requirement that frustrated gamers was also overwhelming EA’s servers and causing the game to crash. Despite issuing an apology for the game’s poor launch performance, Maxis and EA refused to budge on “SimCity’s” always-online requirement.
