Alekhine’s Gun is a stealth action shooter that takes place right in the heart of the Cold War as well as parts of World War II. Formerly known as Death to Spies 3, the game is being developed by Maximum Games. While not a direct sequel, the development team has described the title as a spiritual successor to both Death to Spies and Death to Spies: Moment of Truth. Those first two games were released in 2007 and 2009 respectively, leaving quite a gap in the release time for this third game that is at least loosely based on the series. Alekhine’s Gun features a third person perspective and an open map that allows you multiple ways to complete different missions. The game is launching for the PS4, Xbox One and PC on March 1, 2016.
Development
Alekhine’s Gun was first announced in 2010 by 1C Company under the original title of Death to Spies 3: Ghost of Moscow. When the game was first announced 1C was going to publish it while Haggard Games handled the development. In 2011, 1C Company withdrew from the publishing contract but Haggard Games continued developing the title while looking for a new publisher. In order to pay for development, Haggard announced a crowdfunding attempt on Indigogo in 2013. When that campaign failed to reach its funding goal, the company launched another crowdfunding campaign. In 2014 Haggard tried its hand at getting funding through Kickstarter but the campaign once again failed and the company began looking for someone to hand the project off to. In June 2014, Maximum Games was announced as the new publisher and developer. Alekhine’s Gun is the first title the company has developed from beginning to end, in-house.
Even after the project moved to Maximum Games it had problems getting off the ground. The original release date was set for November of 2015. On November 4, 2015 Maximum announced it was officially moving the release date back to February 9, 2016. Later in the year the game was pushed back a couple of weeks more until the final release date was landed on of March 1, 2016. When the game releases, it will be launched on the PS4, Xbox One and PC.
Story
The game takes place at the height of the Cold War and tensions are at an all-time high between the United States and The USSR. The player takes on the role of a man named Semyon Strogov, a Soviet assassin who has been turned into a CIA ally. The assassin has been renamed Agent Alekhine and set on a number of missions that will have him collecting intelligence and killing anyone who gets in his way. The game has some story taking place during World War II where Strogov actually saved the life of an American agent when both Russian and American forces were looking to take out a top ranking Nazi who was leading a project to create a supersoldier serum.
Now that Strogov and his American counterpart have become friends, the CIA agent, known as Vincent Rambaldi needs the Russian’s help yet again. It seems there is a plot unfolding inside the CIA that is aimed at taking down the American government. If that happens, it could lead to all out nuclear war between the two world powers of America and the Soviet Republic. If Agent Alekhine cannot complete his task, it could mean the end of everything.
The story includes a number of real historical touchstones. It kicks off during World War II but it goes all the way beyond the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Along the way, Agent Alekhine will have to find a way to uncover and stop the plot, without alerting anyone about what he is up to. If the opposition finds out about the fact that the agent is actually working for American allies the plan that is set in motion to start a nuclear war will kick off earlier than planned.
Gameplay
The game has a third person point of view and blends stealth aspects with shooting and hand to hand combat. Infiltration will be the biggest part of the game, according to Maximum Games. Part of this infiltration will be done by having Alekhine don different costumes in order to get closer to his targets. The agent will be dressing up as chefs, bartenders, and handymen as well as waiters and other staff members of various locations throughout the game. There are a number of different ways to play each mission. Sometimes the agent can go in guns blazing and take out all the targets, while other times sneaking around and getting in and out will be of utmost importance.
Characters
Semyon Strogov aka Agent Alekhine is the main character of the game. He is a Russian assassin who has agreed to ally himself with the CIA in order to stop a plot to topple the American government. He has a number of skills he can use, including the ability to infiltrate and assassinate. Vincent Rambaldi is an American CIA agent who’s life was saved by Strogov in a Gestapo prison. It is Rambaldi that has stumbled across the plot to take down the American government. While the CIA agent is seen as smart and good at his job, he might be just a bit too trusting and that notion might lead him to trust someone he shouldn’t.
Andrew Pearson is another American CIA agent who is also investigating the conspiracy. The developers have said this character is “Intensely patriotic, potentially even to the point of recklessness.” While Pearson understands that he must work with Strogov he has taken an instant dislike to the man. This could pose problems as the group tries to unravel the mystery of this conspiracy.
The final character that we know about in the game is named Vera Pavlova and she is a comrade lieutenant to Strogov in the Russian KGB. She has also been recruited by the CIA and while she is working with and knows Strogov, her personality is quite different. She is more outgoing and amiable than Agent Alekhine.
There are other characters in the game that have not been named or announced yet though they will be discovered as players go through Alekhine’s Gun.
