Donkey Kong was originally a Popeye game
Creator Shigeru Miyamoto has admitted that his original idea was to create a Popeye video game and not a Donkey Kong game. The reason he wanted the theme was because the characters and story were fundamental to Miyamoto’s vision. At that time Nintendo was unable to secure a license of Popeye, so his think-tank improvised and suggested that the designers could superimpose the classic love triangle over a King Kong theme, and thus history was made. It’s quite fascinating how one idea can revolutionize an entire industry.
