Bayonetta 2 Review Round-Up

The greatest action game ever made.

Bayonetta 2 (18)

Two years ago, Nintendo procured Bayonetta 2 exclusively for the Wii U, angering a lot of gamers in the process, but putting faith in Platinum’s ability to deliver a top notch action game. Now, it seems that the gamble has paid off. Bayonetta 2 launches on October 24, but the reviews went live last night, and… the reception is universally positive.

Perhaps most astonishingly, Gamespot gave the game a 10. This is surprising because this is only the eighth game in the site’s 18 year history to get a 10, and the first one since 2010. The reviewer said that no action games “come close to the brilliance of Bayonetta 2. It is a masterclass in pure, unadulterated action-game design, where its insane eye-popping visuals meld effortlessly with some of the sharpest, most joyful combat to have ever graced a video game,” while also noting that the only con for the game was the “sad realization that future action games may never top this.”

And yes, it seems to be the same story everywhere else. EDGE gave it a 10/10, saying that ‘Sega’s loss is Nintendo’s gain.’ IGN scored the game a 9.5, Destructoid gave it a 10, Joystiq gave it 5/5, Eurogamer gave it a 9/10, and Game Informer gave it a 9/10. As it stands, it has a Metascore of 91, which makes it the highest reviewed console or handheld game of this year.

Bayonetta 2 might not sell a lot of copies or consoles, but it will certainly make a case for owning a Wii U effectually nonetheless. Stay tuned for our own review of the game shortly after it launches.
