Development

Back in 2014, Activision announced there was going to be a three-year cycle of  Call of Duty development and that Infinity Ward, Sledgehanmer and Treyarch would take turns developing the games. Knowing how the games were laid out, Infinity Ward says their work on the title began soon after the announcement was made and they’ve added lots of new ideas since the work began.

In February of 2016, the game was teased by Activision and said they would not have a booth at E3 but would instead be showing off some of their games through their partner, Sony. On April 26 of 2016 the game was leaked and a trailer for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was shown on Hulu soon after.

In August of 2016, the dev team revealed a new kind of zombies mode for this game, titled Zombies in Spaceland. This new mode is 1980’s themed and will feature the voice talents of actors like David Hasselhoff. In September the multiplayer mode was revealed at a special Call of Duty event. In October, there was a special beta held for people who had already preordered the game. Several weeks later an open beta was hosted in order to test out the servers for Infinite Warfare. The game released on November 4, 2016 for the PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Story

The story for the campaign mode in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is set in the distant future where the earth has been stripped of all of its natural resources because of massive population growth. The nations of the earth had banded together in order to set up settlements on other planets. Rifts have begun to form between the nations that are in control of earth and the settlements that have showed up on other planets.

One militant faction, known as the Settlement Defense Front (SDF) has gotten into a war with the United Nations Space Alliance in an attempt to secede. There had been an uneasy peace before the game begins, but as Infinite Warfare opens, the SDF has launched a surprise attack on Earth and decimated the forces defending the planet. Players take on the role of Nick Reyes, who is thrust into command of one of Earth’s most powerful spacecraft.

Reyes is tasked with fighting off the SDF from Earth and then pursuing them around the star system, trying to make sure those forces are not able take over the entire solar system.

The other story in the game is that of Zombies in Spaceland. This mode takes place in a 1980’s theme park. Four characters are trapped inside the theme park as part of a horror film and must survive an onslaught of the undead.

Gameplay

Infinite Warfare possesses quite a few aspects of other Call of Duty games. Because the game is set in the distant future, there are a number of futuristic weapons that can be used by the player. There are new elements to this game that haven’t been featured in previous titles because this is the first game that includes in-depth space battles. There are environments such as low gravity areas that will change the way people are doing battle.

There will also be aerial battles thanks to the spaceships. Players will be engaged in battles between the UNSA and the SDF. In addition to the main campaign, there are also side quests players can undertake in order to gain customizations for weapons, armor and outfit design. The main character also has a wrist computer which is used in various parts of the game in order to hack into opponents computer systems and vehicles.

The multiplayer mode has been revamped so that instead of there being classes, there are Rigs. There are six Rigs in total, Warfighter, Merc, FTL, Stryker, Phantom and Synaptic. These different battle rigs have different appearances, with Synaptics being a kind of remotely controlled robot. These Rigs all have different payloads and abilities as well as appearances.

The Zombies in Spaceland mode is a cooperative multiplayer mode that has more traditional aspects of the previous Call of Duty games. This mode has up to four players taking on the roles of different actors stuck in a horror movie plot as they fight off tons of zombies. A new feature is introduced in this game called Fate and Fortune Cards.
