Development

Child of Light was first revealed to the public during the GDC Europe 2013 event in Cologne Germany by the games Creative Director, BAFTA winning Patrick Plourode (Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry) who wanted to work on a game that was different from his usual AAA budget endeavors. The games art style is directly influenced by the world wide critically acclaimed work of Studio Ghibli (Ni no Kuni & My Neighbor Totoro) as well as the work of award winning illustrator Yoshitaka Amano (Anime adaptation – Speed Racer).

The game will be running on the recently developed and already successful in house Engine known as UbiArt Framework. The Engine has already seen success in two Rayman titles and is powering an upcoming title as well. It’s the UbiArt Framework that allows Child of Lights art style and gameplay to come to life, plus when this is coupled with the highly skilled team that has previously worked on Far Cry 3 the title is likely to be highly polished.

Similar to other artistically inclined games inspired by the likes of Studio Ghibli (Final Fantasy & Dragon Quest) the game will be presented in the same manner with artistic renditions of on screen characters driving the plot forward during moments of conversation and other dialogues.

Story

child of light

Set in the land of Lemuria, this “playable poem” will see players take control of the character named Aurora, around which the game will focus. The 19th century Austrian girl is unfortunate enough to have encountered and contracted a strange physical malady that cause her to sleep.

When she wakes from this strange slumber, Aurora finds that she is not in Austria any more. She awakens in Lemuria, a land that has had all of its celestial bodies stolen from the sky by the evil Black Queen, the plot’s antagonist. It falls to Aurora (who will be accompanied by Igniculus the Firefly) to return the stars and sun to their rightful place and once again meet with her father.

Gameplay

Child of Light is primarily a side scrolling adventure game with Role Playing Elements that allows for leveling up to aid Aurora in her quest to stop the Black Queen, while unconfirmed at the time of writing the game is expected to have a skill tree similar to that found in Far Cry 3 albeit less brutal.

Battling your foes will engage a combat system that draws inspiration from active time battle system, lending it a distinct gameplay feel as well allowing for a more streamlined levelling experience. When playing the game in multiplayer the game takes on a co-op feel wherein one player plays as Aurora while another assists her with the secondary character Igniculus.

Characters

Aurora – Aurora is a girl born in 19th century (1895 specifically) Austria who is stricken with a sleeping ailment who awakes to find herself in the troubled land of Lemuria. She is tasked with returning the Sun and Stars to the sky to counter the damage done by the Black Queen. Aurora is the games primary protagonist.

The Black Queen – The Black Queen has stolen the Sun and Stars from the skies of Lemuria in pursuit of her own interests and serves as the games primary antagonist.

The Lady of the Forest – The Lady of the forest is the being who created Igniculus the Firefly who aids Aurora in her quest.

Igniculus the Firefly – Igniculus is a little blue Firefly who was only recently brought into existence alongside the appearance of Aurora. As such, everything the duo encounter is new and strange to them. He aids Aurora in her quest by blinding her foes and helping to find her items that may assist her.
